Chapter 2

Author: Golden Leaf
I did not wait for anyone to react. I turned and walked toward the Maybach parked on the curb.

Behind me, Tamsin's crying, Lorraine's cursing, and Dad's shouting all blurred together into noise.

I did not look back. I pulled the car door open and got in.

"Mr. Coulter, where to?"

Alec Reese, my driver and personal assistant, watched me through the rearview mirror. He had clearly been rattled by the scene.

"Grayfield Memorial first. Get in touch with Dr. Morgan Ellsworth in neurology and schedule a full physical for my dad. Make sure it's as thorough as possible. And have every bottle of blood pressure medication he's taken in the last six months sent to a lab for analysis.

"On top of that, pull all the security footage from six years ago when the Rigbys came to our house asking for the marriage, and get me all of Tamsin's financial records from the past six years. I want everything on my desk by three."

Alec paused for a beat, but his professionalism kept him from asking questions. "Got it, Mr. Coulter. I'll get on it right away."

The car pulled out slowly. I leaned back and closed my eyes.

My phone would not stop buzzing. I pulled it out and found over 20 messages from Tamsin, fired off one after another.

The first batch was all insults. The last one read, [Gage, you win. I won't ask for the engagement gift. I won't make you put my name on the deed either. Come back right now and sign the papers and I'll pretend today never happened.

[Otherwise, I'm telling every outlet in the city how the Coulter family threw 20 million at my parents to force me into this marriage. Everyone will know what kind of man you really are.]

I stared at the screen, felt the corners of my mouth tightened, and did not reply.

By the time we reached the hospital, Morgan was already waiting on the front steps.

She was my oldest friend and head of neurology at Grayfield Memorial. "Alec says you bailed on your own wedding at the courthouse? What kind of stunt was that? Tamsin came to me just last month for a prenatal prescription."

"It's nothing. I just don't want to get married anymore."

I did not explain further. "I need you to set up a full physical for my dad. Focus on anything that looks like chronic poisoning. His blood pressure medication is being sent over. Run the contents for me."

Morgan could tell something was wrong. She did not push it, just nodded and left to make the arrangements.

Before long, both my parents showed up. The second Mom saw me, she was already in my face, jabbing a finger at my chest.

"Have you lost your mind? Calling off a perfectly good wedding out of nowhere! Tamsin's mother is already at our house making a scene.

"She's threatening to go to the press, to show up at your office with picket signs. You're coming home right now to apologize, and you're signing those papers today!"

I gave a flat "mm" without any shift in tone. "Let her. If she wants money, she can take the evidence to court. Whatever the judge awards, I'll pay."

Dad was about to blow up when Morgan came back with the preliminary blood work.

"There are trace amounts of a chronic neurotoxin in your father's blood. The dosage is small, but it's been building for about three months. Another six months of this and he would almost certainly have suffered an irreversible stroke."

Both my parents went still.

Mom's voice was shaking. "How is that even possible? He's always been healthy."

My fingers tightened at my sides. "Has anyone new come into the house in the last three months? A different housekeeper, a different cook? Has Tamsin touched Dad's medication at all?"

Mom thought for a long moment. The color drained from her face. "His blood pressure pills... Last month, Tamsin said she'd gotten imported ones through a connection abroad. They're better quality, she said. That's when we switched."

It was just as I thought.

In my previous life, I had always assumed Dad's stroke came from years of late nights and overwork. It was not until I was on my own deathbed that I learned Tamsin had swapped his medication.

I exhaled slowly. "Bring every last one of those imported pills in for testing. And run background checks on everyone who's been in and out of the house recently."

Willa was holding an ice cream cone. The moment she saw me, she came running over with a big smile."Gage! My brother says you're teaming up again for this project. We're going to build even more parks and affordable housing, right?""Right." I smiled and nodded. On the way upstairs, Beckett walked behind me and spoke up out of nowhere."Gage, back then, Douglas took credit for what you did and used my family's resources to make a fortune, and all he did with it was hurt people. I used to think good deeds went unrewarded. Now I see it was just a matter of time."I smiled and said nothing. At the door to my office, Alec was waiting with a folder."Mr. Coulter, the shares Everett acquired have been awarded to us by the court. And about the project Mr. Langdon mentioned in the neighboring city, the local government has already sent an official invitation."They asked for a joint development between the Coulter Group and Langdon Holdings by name. They said they trust our standards.

"You... you set me up?"Everett pointed at me, eyes full of venom. "I won't let this go! Even if it kills me, I'm dragging your whole family down with me!"He reached into his jacket and pulled out a switchblade, lunging toward Dad.I had been waiting for him to snap. I sidestepped and drove a kick into his stomach, sending him to the floor. The two security guards standing by moved in immediately and pinned him down. The switchblade clattered across the floor.I picked up my phone and called the police. They arrived in under ten minutes and took Everett away in cuffs. He was still screaming threats as they dragged him out, swearing he would get his revenge. I did not acknowledge him. I handed everything over to the officers.Three months later, the court delivered its verdict.Everett was convicted on multiple charges and sentenced to 12 years.Every share of the Coulter Group he had acquired through the hostile purchases was seized. The proceeds from the auction were used t

"Gage, you're finally back. I was starting to think you were hiding from me.""Why would I hide?" I loosened my tie and sat down across from him.Beckett followed and took the seat beside me. He glanced at Everett but said nothing.Everett looked surprised to see Beckett, but recovered quickly. He tapped the old documents on the coffee table."Gage, let's not waste each other's time. Back in the day, my father and yours co-founded a company together. When my father died, yours seized his 40 percent stake. That's where the Coulter Group came from. You're not going to deny that, are you?""Of course I'm going to deny it."I leaned back on the couch, voice flat. "Our fathers did start a company together, but less than six months in, your father pulled out after a bad investment. The withdrawal agreement is sitting in my family's safe."My dad built the company on his own after that. Your father had nothing to do with it.""A withdrawal agreement?" Everett scoffed. "Your dad could'

Beckett sat beside her, occasionally telling her not to interrupt, his expression nothing but fond.Halfway through the meal, Beckett set down his fork and looked at me."Gage, there's something I think you should know. When we traced Douglas's gambling records, we found that the people who loaned him money weren't ordinary underground bookmakers. They were from Prescott Enterprises."I frowned. "Prescott Enterprises? You mean Everett Prescott?"Everett Prescott was the CEO of Prescott Enterprises. Our families went way back.Dad and his father had been close friends for decades. Everett and I grew up together. We had always been on good terms. Why would he be running a loan shark operation targeting Douglas?"That's him." Beckett nodded and slid a transaction report in front of me."Look. The 20 million Douglas owed was a setup. Everett arranged for someone to bring Douglas to the tables, rigged the games until he was 20 million in the hole, then offered him a predatory loan on

The workers' overdue wages were paid out that same day. The men showed up at the office with thank-you letters and handshakes, calling me a good man.The senior shareholders from Rigby Group followed through on their word and transferred all their shares to me at no charge. After Rigby Group's assets were fully liquidated, the total came out to just enough to cover the 50 million Langdon Holdings had invested.Beckett and I talked it over and restructured Rigby Group into a subsidiary of the Coulter Group, focused specifically on urban renewal projects.Every one of the original workers was kept on, and their pay went up by thirty percent. Everyone came out ahead, except for the Rigby family, who ended up behind bars.A week later, Tamsin's sentencing came through for attempted murder. Given her voluntary confession, the critical evidence she provided, and the fact that no one was seriously harmed, the court showed leniency and sentenced her to five years.Douglas received 12 yea

I looked up and saw Douglas pushing through the front gate with over a dozen reporters in tow, microphones raised and cameras rolling, shoving past the security guards. He was wailing at the top of his lungs."Gage Coulter, you corporate parasite! You've destroyed my family! I'm going to expose you in front of every camera here! You forced my daughter into a marriage and then threw her away! You made her lose her baby! And now you're trying to swallow our company whole! What kind of man does that?!"The reporters swarmed in behind him, microphones shoved in my face."Mr. Coulter, is it true that Ms. Rigby's miscarriage was connected to your decision to call off the wedding?""There are reports that six years ago, you paid 20 million to force the Rigby family to give you their daughter. Can you confirm that?""Is the Coulter Group attempting a hostile takeover of Rigby Group?"I frowned and was about to respond when Beckett stepped forward beside me."I'm Beckett Langdon of Langd
