Dara's POV

Nobody moved for a long moment. The silence stretched taut between the four of us, broken only by the distant sound of pups training somewhere across the yard, oblivious to the reckoning quietly unfolding just out of their sight. Mackenzie straightened her spine, unbowed despite the danger radiating off Corinne's unnatural, deliberate stillness.

"Enough," Mackenzie said evenly, her voice carrying none of the fear I felt clawing its way up my own throat. "More than you'd like, I imagine, though considerably less than she deserves to know."

Corinne's gaze slid to me, assessing, cold in a way that made me want to take a step back — and made me plant my feet more firmly instead, refusing to give her that particular satisfaction. "You have no idea what you're stepping into, girl. None whatsoever."

"Then enlighten me." I forced steel into my spine, willing my hands not to shake at my sides where she could see them. "You've spent my entire life making sure I never asked the right questions. I'm asking now, whether it suits you or not."

Something flickered behind her composed mask — not quite fear, but adjacent to it, close enough that I filed the observation away carefully, a small crack in armor I'd once believed entirely impenetrable, forged over decades.

"The Guardian bloodlines were never meant to intertwine with Alpha lines." Corinne's voice stayed low, controlled, every word measured like a blade drawn slowly from its sheath, deliberate in a way that made my skin crawl. "Not because of some ancient curse, as I told my son — that part, I confess freely, was a convenient fiction, constructed purely for expedience. The truth is older, and considerably less convenient for everyone standing in this clearing. Guardian blood, properly bonded to an Alpha line, doesn't merely strengthen a pack's power. It *transforms* the entire balance of authority within it, root and branch. It shifts power away from careful, predictable bloodline succession and toward something the old pact never fully explains in any text I've managed to find in thirty years of searching — something no Alpha Mother in three hundred years has been willing to risk unleashing upon her own pack."

"You mean it threatens you," I said quietly, understanding dawning cold and sharp all at once. "Not the pack at all, not really. You, specifically, and your hold on everything you've built."

Corinne's jaw tightened, the closest thing to confirmation I suspected I'd ever manage to pull from her. "I have given this pack thirty years of stability, girl. Thirty years of careful, deliberate governance, sacrificing more than you could possibly understand. I will not stand by and watch an untested bloodline dismantle everything I have built simply because my son fell in love with the wrong face at the wrong possible time."

"You'd rather watch him die," I said, something hot and furious rising fast in my chest, burning clean past the fear that had gripped me only moments before, "than risk losing your grip on this pack for even a single season."

"I never intended for him to die." For the first time since I'd known her, something like genuine strain cracked visibly through Corinne's composure, a hairline fracture running through decades of careful, practiced control. "The curse was never meant to manifest with this kind of severity. I miscalculated the strength of the bond between the two of you, badly. That is the only mistake I am prepared to admit to here, and I do not offer even that lightly."

"That's not an apology," Chidi said sharply, stepping forward, her whole body rigid with barely contained fury on my behalf. "That's an excuse dressed up in prettier, more expensive language."

Corinne's eyes flicked to her, dismissive, before returning to settle on me with unnerving, unbroken focus. "Believe whatever you like about my intentions, child. But understand this clearly, because I will not repeat myself again — if you restore that bond, you will be inviting a fundamental shift in this pack's entire power structure, one I have spent my whole adult life working tirelessly to prevent. I am telling you this not as a threat, though I imagine you'll hear it as exactly that, but as a warning born from hard experience. Others before me have died protecting this balance. I do not intend to be the last one standing when it finally breaks."

She turned and left without waiting for any response at all, her retreat every bit as composed as her arrival had been, disappearing back toward the pack house with the same cold precision she carried into every room she ever entered. The three of us stood in stunned silence long after she'd gone, the morning air suddenly feeling thinner than it had only moments before.

"She just admitted it," Chidi breathed, disbelief and fury warring openly in her voice. "She just stood right there and admitted the entire curse story was her fabrication, like it cost her nothing at all to say it out loud."

But my mind had already snagged on something else entirely, one single detail buried inside her warning, sharp and cold as the moment I'd first registered it.

*Others before me have died protecting this balance.*

"Elder Mackenzie." My voice came out unsteady, barely above a whisper. "What did she mean by that? Others have died — protecting what, exactly? What has this pack been hiding, all this time, right under everyone's feet?"

Mackenzie's expression had gone carefully, deliberately blank in a way that told me she knew precisely what Corinne had meant by those words, and hadn't yet decided how much of it she was willing to share with me, even now.

"That," she said quietly, glancing toward the pack house where Corinne had disappeared moments before, "is a conversation for somewhere considerably more private than an open training yard, with far too many ears nearby."
