Chapter 2

作者: Anna Smith
Before Mom left, her voice turned completely cold.

“We’re done arguing, Lyra. Elara’s shift has already begun, and this door is staying closed until sunrise.”

I didn’t answer.

Not because I was angry.

Every breath felt as if I were swallowing red-hot shards of silver.

My wolf lay curled deep inside my mind, growing weaker by the second. I tried to call out to her, but all I heard were broken whimpers.

She had never been this quiet before.

The first time I was locked in this cell at twelve, she had thrown herself furiously against the silver door.

That day, I had just defeated three older boys in the training yard when my claws emerged without warning, piercing my fingertips.

Dad froze for a moment.

Then he lifted me into the air.

“The future Alpha of the Nightfall Pack is already showing her power!”

“I’m so proud of you!”

That was the first time I felt my wolf.

It was also the last time anyone celebrated her existence.

A messenger arrived from the pack estate seconds later.

Elara had gone into cardiac arrest.

She was no longer breathing.

The joy vanished from Dad’s face. He carried me back to the estate, handed me to a guard, and entered Elara’s room alone.

Several hours later, Elara finally woke up.

But when Dad came out again, the way he looked at me had completely changed.

That same night, he ordered the healer to give me my first dose of suppressants.

My wolf struggled inside me. I shook from the pain and clung to Dad’s hand as I cried.

“Dad, why are you making me take this? Did my wolf do something wrong?”

Dad wiped away my tears.

“She didn’t do anything wrong. She only needs to sleep for a while.”

“It’s the only way Elara can survive.”

He pulled me into his arms. His voice was gentle, but the decision had already been made.

“Lyra, you’re the older sister. It’s your responsibility to protect her.”

When Rowan realized I was his fated mate at sixteen, he refused to mark me because even the mate bond might awaken my wolf.

But now I could feel her fading.

I raised my hand and knocked again.

No one answered from the hallway.

In the distance, the pack erupted in cheers.

Elara’s first-shift ceremony had begun.

I reached for Caden through our mind-link.

“Caden, something is wrong with the silver cell.”

Voices and ritual chants echoed through his end of the link.

“Lower the silver wards.”

“The ceremony has reached its most critical stage,” he replied. “Dad won’t allow anyone to leave.”

“I think I’m dying…”

I hadn’t even finished before Caden cut me off angrily.

“Enough, Lyra.”

“There is nothing wrong with the cell, and you’ve been taking those suppressants for six years. Nothing has ever happened before. Why is tonight suddenly different?”

“Is it because Elara gets to shift first? Or because we’re all with her and no one stayed behind to keep you company?”

“Lyra, she is your sister. Do you really have to drag everyone away at the most dangerous moment of her life? Will you only be satisfied if she dies?”

Disappointment filled his voice as he severed our mind-link.

My mind fell completely silent.

I remained on my knees, staring blankly at the door.

Whenever I had been locked in the silver cell as a child, Caden would sit outside and tell me hunting stories until the drugs finally pulled me to sleep.

He had once promised that he would always protect me.

Now, when he heard me begging for help, his first thought was that I wanted Elara dead.

Silver light crawled up my arms, burning through my skin.

I forced myself upright and slammed my shoulder against the door again and again.

“Rowan!”

I knew he could hear me.

Fated mates didn’t need to complete their bond to feel each other’s agony.

At the ritual grounds, Rowan suddenly clutched his chest.

Mom immediately turned toward him.

“It’s Lyra.”

Rowan looked in the direction of the silver cell, his face turning pale.

“She’s in terrible pain.”

The last trace of concern on Mom’s face hardened into anger.

“She’s still carrying on?”

Mom glanced at Elara, who was writhing inside the ritual circle. Her voice grew sharper.

“She knows you’re the pack Beta. You have to remain here to hold the outer ritual circle, and she’s still trying to call you away.”

“Does she want to stand by and watch her own sister die?”

Inside the circle, Elara lay on the ground as her bones cracked and reshaped.

Rowan was silent for several seconds.

Then he deliberately closed the faint mate link between us.

The last trace of his warmth vanished from my chest.

I could no longer feel him.

A deafening cheer suddenly erupted in the distance.

Beneath the Blood Moon, a silver-white she-wolf stood for the first time and raised her head in a long howl.

Elara had completed her first shift.

Everyone celebrated, convinced that six years of sacrifice had finally meant something.

None of them knew that I was already dead inside the silver cell.

My funeral was held beneath the next full moon.According to Nightfall Pack tradition, a werewolf who had never completed their first shift could not be buried beneath the Moon Tree. For the first time, Dad defied the Pack Council.“Lyra had a wolf.”His voice was hoarse as he held my ashes against his chest.“She simply never had the chance to let anyone see her.”No one tried to stop him again.Dad dismantled the silver cell with his own hands. When he tore down the door, he discovered countless bloodstains on the other side. The deepest claw marks surrounded the lock, carved there by my broken claws as I fought to escape. He knelt before them and remained there all night.Mom brought my first-shift dress to the funeral. It was a long black gown with golden thread around the collar, symbolizing my Alpha bloodline. She had planned to tell me how proud she had always been when she finally saw me wearing it.Now, all she could do was fold the dress and place it in front of my grave.“Ly

After the security recording ended, Elara returned to the pack estate alone. The dark blue gift box was still sitting on the dining table. She walked over and read the card resting on top.【For my beloved sister.】Elara’s hands began to shake.Mom hurried into the room behind her, then stopped when she saw the box.“Did Lyra prepare this?”Elara didn’t answer. She untied the red ribbon.Inside was a moonstone necklace. Two young wolves were engraved on the back of the pendant—one silver-white and one black—running side by side.It was the design we had chosen when we were children.I had promised her that once we both completed our first shifts, we would run together to the highest mountain in the northern territory.A letter lay beneath the necklace.Elara unfolded it.【Elara,By the time you read this, you should finally have your wolf.Don’t be afraid of her. And don’t feel guilty because mine had to be suppressed for six years.Your wolf didn’t steal my life. We simply had to reach

The technician lowered his head.“Level Five forces concentrated silver directly through a werewolf’s body. An ordinary wolf wouldn’t survive thirty minutes. Even someone with Alpha blood couldn’t endure it for an entire night.”Mom looked at my burned and mutilated body, her lips trembling violently.“Why didn’t the display sound an alarm?”“The control crystal was damaged. It couldn’t detect the actual power level, so it continued sending Level One readings to the display.”The healer instructed his assistants to take my body to the examination room.Mom refused to let go.“Where are you taking her?”“I need to confirm her time of death and determine what the Level Five wards did to her body.”“You are not cutting her open!”Mom clutched me tightly, her eyes turning fierce as if she were still protecting a living child.“She was in pain all night. No one is hurting her again!”Dad crouched beside her and tried to loosen her grip.Mom suddenly shoved him away.“You said there was noth

Mom’s scream echoed through the hallway as she lunged toward me, her knees striking the floor.“Lyra, wake up!”She grabbed my shoulders and tried to pull me away from the silver wall. But my body had already stiffened. My burned skin had fused to the metal, and when she pulled, the blackened flesh began to tear away.Mom released me in horror.“How did this happen?”She stared at her hands as if she couldn’t understand what she had just touched.“The panel showed the lowest setting. How could it have burned her like this?”Rowan knelt on my other side.“Lyra, it’s me.”“Didn’t you always want us to complete our bond? I brought the ring.”He pulled the moonstone ring from his pocket and tried to slide it onto my finger with trembling hands. But the silver had burned and twisted my fingers. The ring wouldn’t go on.Rowan’s eyes immediately turned red.“The suppressants can put her into a deep sleep. This has happened before.”His words seemed to jolt Dad back to life.“Get the healer!”

By the following afternoon, the healer finally allowed Elara to leave the treatment room. Her wolf had stabilized. From that moment on, no matter when I completed my first shift, my Alpha power would no longer affect her.Yet Elara remained uneasy throughout the drive home. She called me several times.I never answered. She reached for me through our mind-link and received no response there either.“Lyra has never shut me out before.”Mom tucked a blanket over her legs.“She’s angry.”“No one stayed outside the silver cell with her last night. No one told her stories until she fell asleep. She thinks we chose you over her again, so she’s deliberately ignoring everyone.”Elara’s face turned pale.“But even when she’s angry, she has never cut me off like this.”Silence filled the car.Rowan instinctively reached for our mate link. There was nothing on the other end.“Drive faster.”Dad immediately ordered the driver to speed up.By the time they reached the pack estate, night was beginni

After completing her first shift, Elara remained in her wolf form for less than a minute before collapsing into Mom’s arms. Her wolf had awakened, but she was still dangerously weak. The healer ordered them to take her to the treatment room immediately. Until her wolf fully stabilized, no one was allowed to leave her side.Everyone rushed away from the ritual grounds in a panic.Only Rowan stopped as he passed the silver cell.“Lyra?”He called my name, but there was no answer from inside. My spirit stood beside him, staring at the closed door.I knew he couldn’t hear me, but I kept pleading anyway.“Rowan, please go inside and check on me.”He reached for the lock.At that moment, the healer’s assistant came running down the hallway.“Rowan, Elara’s body is rejecting her wolf. The healer needs you to keep the ritual circle stable.”Rowan glanced back at the silver cell.A thin trail of blood had seeped beneath the door. His face tightened.“There’s blood coming from the cell.”The ass
