Maeve

I’m an idiot. I can’t even look at my reflection in the mirror without blushing so deeply I feel actual heat shimmering across my cheeks. I listen to Soren’s deep, monotone voice as he speaks to Helena, the old witch who owns this house, this clinic deep in the woods, in the other room while I dress. It’s nightfall, but the passage of time today has been nothing but hazy. A storm of epic proportions raged, flooding the forest, swelling every creek and washing out the narrow roadways that connect the smallest, most rural villages to the large towns and cities in the Roguelands.

Soren says that’s in our favor, but I’m still not sure why he’s being hunted or how. I destroyed his silver band. The Viper, whoever she is, can’t possibly have a way to track him down now, right?

I try to swipe the Viper from my mind, but she works for Hannibal. Soren is a direct link to the most wanted man in the Allied Kingdoms, and I’m… I’m here, with him. I’m… I’m having a hard time not looking at h

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   How the Tables Turn

SorenI hike a narrow stairwell to the fourth floor of the nicest hotel I’ve ever stayed in, especially for a town as small as this in the Highlands. The rolling mountain view beyond the diamond shaped windows is bleak, totally dark, and socked in by storm clouds still raging through the valleys below this mountain top village. I’ve never been to Juniper Grove, but I’ve been to the Highlands for work. Maeve was right when she mentioned the Highlands weren’t technically considered part of the Kingdom of Eastonia, although I know for a fact several of the more powerful Alphas here throw their support behind the royal family…. Both royal families, that is. The mountains serve as the official border between Eastonia and Crescent Falls. The border itself is only three dozen miles away or so, over a few gnarly mountain peaks and a wide, steep valley where a highway, and most recently, a rail line, connects the two kingdoms. Both King Ryatt and King Sydney keep their borders under lock an

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Full-Blooded

SorenI stand on the porch for several minutes after Patton leaves, disappearing into the storm to go board up his house. He can’t stay there now. Not with the threat of the Hounds. His theory about Duke’s behavior made sense, but I’m not entirely convinced he wouldn’t have gone to the Hounds, or worse, alerted the Viper herself that Princess Maeve was with me, in the Roguelands, unguarded. Her boss… well, he’d love a royal in his clutches, especially Maeve, given her skillset. The thought makes my stomach turn, or maybe that’s biting hunger, I’m not sure, but I go back inside, and the witches are disappointed to find out that Patton left. He must come here sometimes. He left the basket, and it’s one of his fancy ones. He’ll return for it when it’s safe, I’m sure, and I do my best to explain that to the witches while watching the old witch continue her inspection of the bowl in the center of the room. I start to move in the direction of the room where Maeve’s resting, but the elder

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Time to Get Out

SorenI’ve never been a fan of witches. I don’t trust them, and they smell strange. They don't smell like shifters do. They smell like… their potions and herbs, with the underlying metallic scent of magic permeating the air around them. I tend to steer clear of them even though it's nearly impossible living in a place like Moonrise, their mecca. Now, it’s completely impossible. The ancient stone cottage built in a grove of cottonwood trees tilts to the side, one corner sinking slowly into the soil over the decades. Four witches rush around the main room of the house, speaking in low tones as they grind herbs and toss them into a cauldron, all while I guard the doorway leading into the room where Maeve is prostate on a cot, covered in thick quilts stuffed with goose down, a fire blazing in the hearth only a few feet away from her. The oldest witch, an elder, skirts in my direction holding a shallow bowl. It’s perfectly smooth on the outside, but the inside is ingrained in a series o

MaeveI spent the day mostly in Patton’s company. He’s a wonderful man. He reminds me of… well, honestly no man I’ve ever met before. He’s a domestic Goddess who keeps me fed throughout the day but also gives me a fair amount of space, and by the time the sun sets, I feel… better. I sit on the edge of the bed upstairs, watching smoke curl between my fingers. That’s more than I’ve been able to summon in the days since following Soren’s train. I close my eyes and sigh in relief, curling my fingers into a fist at the same moment Soren, who’s made himself scarce all day, walks into the room and spots me, spots the smoke. He slowly closes the door behind him, those strange, multi-colored eyes locking on mine. I wait for him to say something, anything, but he just stands there. So, I say, “My powers are starting to come back, I think.”“I can see that.” He crosses the room, rummaging in the closet… again. He finds what he’s searching for and slips what looks like money into his pocket.

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   We're Not Friends

SorenPatton is already at the kitchen table drinking coffee when I sit up from the couch, blinking into hazy midmorning sunlight. My body rejects the idea of moving, my joints popping and head swimming for several seconds before I fully rise and stumble to my feet. He hums a laugh, but his eyes are on a newspaper spread out across the table, which he keeps so clean and polished I can see my reflection in its surface when I sit down. “What time is it?”“Almost eleven,” he says with a small yawn, flipping a page. “Didn’t feel like waking you.”“Is she up yet?” I blearily reach toward the window to pull the curtains closed against the intense sunlight pouring directly into my eyes, but Patton beats me to it, then rises to fetch a coffee mug from his tidy cabinets. “Not yet–”I rise, turning for the stairs.“I already checked on her,” Patton admends, clicking his tongue at me. “She’s fine. She’s still asleep.”I grip the top of the chair, scanning his face for inconsistencies in his st
