Aria’s POV

The horn had barely stopped echoing when another growl broke the air.

“Keep your guard up!” Jace shouted over the noise.

I spun around just in time to block a strike. My staff clashed against another with a hard crack that sent a sting up my arms. The circle was wild now, full of dust, sweat, and movement. Fifteen of us still stood, maybe less.

Someone fell near the edge, and the horn sounded again. Fourteen.

My breath came in sharp bursts. The heat of the morning pressed against my skin. I ducked beneath another swing, my body reacting faster than my thoughts. Every move felt sharper, too fast, too focused. It was like my body already knew what to do before I even decided.

Focus. Stay in control.

The boy in front of me snarled and lunged again. His staff cut through the air. I twisted to the side, letting his swing miss by an inch, then struck his ribs. He staggered back, his foot brushing the edge of the chalk circle. His eyes darted toward the officials, uncertain. That

Aria's POV I barely slept that night.Every time I shut my eyes, I didn’t see books or shelves. I saw him. Lucian. The way he looked at me, those grey eyes locked on mine like he was hunting for something hidden under my skin.So I just lay there, flat on my back, staring at the ceiling and counting my breaths. This felt dangerous. Not the castle walls, not the secrets crowding this place. Him. And me.I rolled onto my side and pressed my palm to my ribs, right where my wolf should be. I waited, like always. Nothing. No pull, no whisper, not even the faintest echo of another heartbeat beside mine. Just the same empty silence I’d carried for as long as I could remember.Tonight, it felt even heavier.Everyone else my age had their wolf. They could shift, they could run, they felt the moon tug on them and the thread of the pack holding them tight.Me? I felt nothing.A cold thought slipped in, sharp as ice. What if my wolf stayed silent because my true mate was still out there? What if

Lucian's POV The library door clicked shut behind Aria, and the room felt too big and quiet without her in it. Her scent lingered in the air, a trace of the soap she used and something warmer, something just her. I stood by the window, gazing out at the gardens, the silence in my head broken by one thought after another. Most of them, lately, were about her.Ronan walked in a minute later. He didn’t speak at first, just came to stand beside me, following my gaze out to the empty garden.“She looked lighter, just now,” he finally said. “I saw her in the hall.”“She did.”“Good.You’ll need her to be strong for what’s coming.”I glanced at him. He wasn’t smiling. “What’s coming?”“The council session’s been moved up.”He pulled a folded note from his pocket. “This came from Master Callen at the academy an hour ago.”I took it, breaking the simple wax seal.Your Majesty,Following your order to investigate the origins of the forest attack, my trackers have found nothing else. No trail, no

Lira’s knock came right as I finished tying my hair. I’d been sitting on the edge of my bed for too long, trying not to replay last night.“Come in,” I called. She walked in with breakfast. One look at me and then she stopped, she had a tray in hand, her eyebrows going up. “Oh.”“What?” I asked, even though her smirk already told me.“Nothing,” she said, placing the tray down. “You just look… awake.”“I slept fine.”“Mm-hmm.” She poured my tea, the sound too loud in the quiet room.I sighed. “Just say it.”“Say what?” she asked, all fake innocence.“Whatever’s making you smile like that.”She leaned against the table. “Fine. You have that look. The ‘I just had a private dinner with the King and my head is still spinning’ look.”My face went hot. “It was just dinner.”“Sure. And I’m just a maid.” She laughed at my expression. “Relax. Did you have a good time?”I didn’t answer, which was an answer. Her smile turned real. “Good. You deserve a good time.”I had to look down at my hands. “

My breath caught. The air tightened around us.We both froze. His presence was so close I could feel him, even though he wasn’t touching me. Before I could speak, he stood up and walked over to the window.“The world outside these walls isn’t kind,” he said. His voice sounded calm, but there was something heavy in it. “Especially if you haven’t learned your strength yet.”I watched his back for a moment and then stepped up beside him. Our shoulders almost brushed. Out in the garden, everything slept under the moon; pale, quiet and too peaceful.“What if I don’t want to be protected?” I asked, a little too softly. He didn’t answer right away. He just stared out at the gardens, his hands on the window ledge. When he finally turned, his face was serious.“It’s not about what you want,” he said. “It’s about what I have to do.”“And what’s that?”“Keep you safe,” he said, voice dropping so low I almost missed it. “Even if you hate me for it.”“I could never hate you.”I said it before I co

I stared at the dress laid across my bed like it might bite me.Lira had left it there an hour ago, well after treating me to a delicious cup of coffee to make up for leaving me in that awkward situation with Lucian earlier. The dress was a deep green, simple but finer than anything I owned. The fabric felt soft under my fingers, nothing like the academy’s rough training wear. I traced the stitching along the collar, my heart tapping a nervous rhythm against my ribs.Just dinner, I reminded myself for the hundredth time. But the memory of his smile at my door, the way he had said prince charming without a hint of mockery, lingered like a warmth I could not shake.I changed slowly, careful with my still tender side. The dress fit neatly, falling just below my knees. I stood before the mirror and barely recognized myself. My hair was loose. My cheeks were still faintly flushed. My eyes wide with a mix of dread and something else I couldn't name.A knock came at seven exactly.I opened t

For a heartbeat, we just stared at each other. My face went hot—a fast, burning blush that spread from my cheeks down my neck. I was sure he’d heard every single word.A slow, soft smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. It wasn’t mean. It was… amused.“Prince charming,” he repeated, his voice low and calm. “I don’t think I’ve ever been called that before.”I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. I just gave a weak little shrug. It probably made me look even more guilty.“Usually, it’s ‘Your Majesty,’ or ‘Your Highness,’” he went on, tilting his head a bit. “Or ‘sir.’ Sometimes ‘my lord,’ if the person is very formal.” He paused. “‘Prince charming’ is… new.”“It was a joke,” I finally said, my voice coming out tight. “Lira was teasing me.”“I heard that part,” he said. His smile grew just a tiny bit. “Should I be worried about the other nicknames you and your maid make up when I’m not here?”That pulled a small, nervous laugh out of me. “I’m not telling you that.”“Why not?”“Bec
