Aria’s POV

The horn had barely stopped echoing when another growl broke the air.

“Keep your guard up!” Jace shouted over the noise.

I spun around just in time to block a strike. My staff clashed against another with a hard crack that sent a sting up my arms. The circle was wild now, full of dust, sweat, and movement. Fifteen of us still stood, maybe less.

Someone fell near the edge, and the horn sounded again. Fourteen.

My breath came in sharp bursts. The heat of the morning pressed against my skin. I ducked beneath another swing, my body reacting faster than my thoughts. Every move felt sharper, too fast, too focused. It was like my body already knew what to do before I even decided.

Focus. Stay in control.

The boy in front of me snarled and lunged again. His staff cut through the air. I twisted to the side, letting his swing miss by an inch, then struck his ribs. He staggered back, his foot brushing the edge of the chalk circle. His eyes darted toward the officials, uncertain. That

Aria's POV The hall was quiet when we arrived. Lira led the way, carrying a small tray of keys. “Here we are,” she said. “The barracks. You’ll be staying here from today.” I looked down the corridor. Plain doors lined each side. Torches flickered lightly, throwing shadows on the stone walls. It felt bigger than any hall I had seen so far. Jace leaned against the doorway. “This is it? Looks… serious.” “It’s the further part of the academy,” I said. “They moved us here for more intense lessons.” “Intense lessons,” he repeated, letting out a low whistle. “Sounds like fun already.” Lira smiled faintly. “You two will have separate rooms. Here, take your key, Aria. Room seven. And Jace, room ten. The others will find theirs along the hall.” I took the key and ran my fingers over the cold metal. “Thanks.” “You’re welcome.” She looked toward the other students. “Make sure you settle in quickly. Captain Varron will speak to you shortly.” I nodded and followed her down the hall. The o

Lucian's POV Ronan leaned forward on the platform, eyes still on the circle. “That was wild. I thought the dust would swallow half of them before the horn.”“They fought well,” I said.“Well?” He turned to me, one brow raised. “That was better than well. Did you see the one with the short sword? Nearly took down two wolves at once.”“He relied on speed, not awareness,” I said. “He would not last in a real fight.”“Still impressive,” Ronan said. “And that girl…” He paused, gaze shifting toward her. “What was that at the end? For a second I thought the ground moved.”“It was quick,” I said quietly.“Quick?” He scoffed. “It looked like the air cracked around her. One moment she was down, then she stood like she owned the field.”“You noticed too much,” I said.“I notice everything,” Ronan said, grinning. “It is my job. You, on the other hand, stared long enough to miss three eliminations.”“You talk too much,” I said.He smirked. “You are avoiding the question.”“There was no question.”

Aria’s POVWhen dawn finally broke, the air carried a stillness that made every sound sharp. I dressed in silence, tying my boots tight. The yard had been cleared. A wide circle of white chalk covered the ground. The space around it buzzed with quiet energy.Dozens of academy officials stood on the raised platform. Their robes shimmered faintly in the morning light. Instructors lined the edges, speaking in low tones.Mistress Eryne stood beside Captain Varron, her expression unreadable. Varron’s gaze swept over us like he could see every thought we were trying to hide.“This,” he said, “is the Battle Round.” His voice carried across the yard, clear and steady. “You will fight until only ten of you remain inside the circle. Use what you’ve learned. Show skill, restraint, and control.”His words hung heavy in the air.He continued, “Changing into your wolf form is not required. But if you must, do so with care. Besides, we are all werewolves, do what suits you. This is not a show of pow

Aria’s POV“Up again,” Captain Varron called out. “You fall, you rise. No breaks.”My arms burned as I pushed myself off the ground. Sweat ran down my back, and the dry dirt clung to my palms. The sixth day had begun just like the others—rough, loud, and endless.Beside me, Jace groaned. “You’d think he enjoys watching us suffer.”I managed a short laugh. “He probably does.”He smirked, shaking sweat from his hair. “You’re keeping up better than yesterday.”“Don’t sound so surprised,” I said, picking up my stance again. My body ached, but I wasn’t going to let him see that.Captain Varron’s voice boomed again. “Pairs—switch!”We trained in groups that morning, sparring until the ground shook with the sound of feet and fists. Every move demanded control. Every mistake earned a hit or a fall. The air smelled of dust and effort.By noon, the heat pressed down on us. I dropped to my knees when the captain called for a pause, my chest rising fast.“Water,” Lira said softly, handing me a fl

Lucian’s POVThe reports from the academy lay in an uneven stack before me. Ink still fresh on the top sheet. I had been sitting there since dawn, reading line after line until the words began to blur.“Forty candidates remain,” I murmured, tracing the lines of the latest report with my thumb. “Three tests completed. One to go.”The Battle Round. The final test before the academy would choose its trainees.A simple enough process on paper. Yet my attention lingered longer than it should have.A soft knock came from the door. Without lifting my eyes, I said, “Enter.”Ronan stepped in, wearing that faint grin he carried like a weapon. “You’re already buried in reports. I thought I’d at least bring you company while you drown.”I leaned back slightly in the chair. “You’re late.”“I was letting you think,” he said, crossing the room with a lazy stride. “You get unpleasant when I interrupt you too early.”He helped himself to the chair opposite mine, arms folding loosely. His eyes moved to
