The throne room pulsed with restrained magic.

Serena sat tall in her seat beside Elias, her golden eyes fixed on the trio of cloaked figures being led in by guards. Their faces were obscured by deep hoods, but the air around them shimmered faintly — a telltale sign of latent power. Power that matched Serena’s in an almost unnerving way.

The Moon Flame hadn’t just returned. They’d evolved.

Elias remained composed beside her, his jaw taut as he studied the strangers. Though his warriors lined the walls of the hall, their presence was for show. Elias knew what Serena had sensed the moment they entered — if these people wanted war, they could summon it with a whisper.

The tallest figure stepped forward and pulled back their hood.

A woman — her features sharp like carved stone, her skin dusted in gold freckles, eyes glowing a stormy silver. Her black hair was twisted into intricate coils, adorned with silver rings shaped like crescent moons.

“Your Majesty,” she said with a voice like rolling thunder. “Queen Serena.”

Serena’s heart stuttered. The woman hadn’t addressed Elias. She’d come for her.

Elias leaned forward. “You’re in the presence of the Crown. Speak your purpose.”

But the woman didn’t look at him. Her gaze remained locked on Serena.

“We’ve come to awaken what was buried,” she said. “To reclaim the daughter of the Moon Flame. The girl hidden in shadows. The queen born of fire and prophecy.”

Serena rose slowly, ignoring the whispers rippling through the chamber. “Who are you?”

The woman smiled faintly. “My name is Nael. I was your mother’s second-in-command.”

Serena’s breath caught.

Lyra.

The name was both familiar and foreign — like a story once read, pages missing. Her mother had vanished when Serena was just a child. She’d been told Lyra died protecting their village during a rogue attack. That her magic had burned too brightly, too fast.

Now this stranger was suggesting her mother hadn’t just been a casualty… but a leader of a hidden order?

Serena’s voice wavered. “My mother is dead.”

Nael’s smile faded. “Yes. But her legacy isn’t. And neither is the power she sealed within you. We’ve come to unlock it.”

Elias stood now, his presence commanding. “You speak of treason. Awakening forbidden magic, gathering power beyond the sanctioned bloodlines—this is the very reason the Moon Flame was destroyed.”

Nael turned to him for the first time. “It wasn’t destroyed. It was buried by cowards too frightened to face change. The Council didn’t purge us because we were dangerous. They purged us because we were free.”

She returned her gaze to Serena. “Your mother tried to shield you from all this. But the Council has found you anyway. They will never stop. They fear what you could become.”

“I don’t even know what I am,” Serena whispered.

Nael stepped forward, ignoring the raised spears of the guards. “Then let us show you.”

The moment she reached into her cloak, half the warriors surged forward, but Elias lifted a hand, freezing them.

Nael pulled out a thin, leather-bound book — old, cracked, humming with enchantment. She held it out to Serena.

“Your mother’s grimoire.”

Serena’s hands trembled as she accepted it. The moment her fingers touched the cover, warmth shot up her arm — not painful, but familiar. The binding pulsed beneath her fingertips like a heartbeat. Her mother’s heartbeat.

Nael stepped back. “Everything you need to know is inside. Spells. Memories. Secrets the Council would kill to silence.”

Elias moved beside her, his voice low. “Serena… this is dangerous. If you open this door, there may be no closing it again.”

She looked at him. Truly looked. For the first time, she saw the worry behind his strength — not just for the kingdom, but for her. For what this could turn her into.

But Serena was done hiding.

“They already made me a target,” she said. “I might as well learn why.”

Nael inclined her head. “We’re camped outside the eastern border. When you’re ready, come. Your people await their Queen.”

With that, the Moon Flame emissaries turned and walked out of the chamber, their cloaks trailing sparks behind them like comet tails.

Silence stretched long after the doors shut.

Serena stared down at the book. “She never told me anything. Not a word.”

“Maybe she was protecting you,” Elias murmured.

“Or maybe she was afraid of me.”

She turned away from the throne, the weight of the grimoire grounding her in a terrifying new reality.

Behind her, Elias said, “Whatever you find in there… whatever you become, you won’t face it alone.”

She didn’t answer right away.

Because deep down, she knew there were some paths that could only be walked alone.

And this — the fire, the truth, the legacy she’d inherited — this was one of them.

The ground did not rumble. It shuddered.A slow, deliberate tremor, like a breath drawn by something ancient. Something waiting. From the cliffs surrounding the Spire, a thin red mist began to rise—light as fog, but far more deliberate. It drifted, coiled, and listened. No birds cried. No wolves howled. It was the quiet of something holding its scream.Serena stood on the southern edge, overlooking the plains that stretched toward the western fault. The sky above was no longer blue. It was pale gold, sickly and tense, as though stained by fire that hadn’t reached the ground yet.Behind her, the camp held still. The child sat beneath the central archway, wrapped in a silken shawl Mira had stitched. It didn’t speak. It hadn’t since the vision. But its silver eyes never left Serena. Not once.“They’re coming,” Caine whispered as he stepped beside her.Serena’s jaw tightened. “Who?”“Not the Gate-born. Not yet. But the ones who remember what the Red Scar was.”She turned to him slowly. “T

The wind shifted. It wasn’t the cold breeze of dawn or the warmth of evening heat. It was dry, electric—thick with something older than magic and heavier than prophecy.Serena woke from her half-sleep, already sweating, her skin hot to the touch. Her flame, which usually curled inside her like a coiled ribbon of light, now thrashed like a storm caught in a cage. She sat upright. The pendant around her neck glowed white-hot. And from across the camp, she heard the child scream. Not a cry of pain.A scream of awakening.Serena reached the tent in seconds, pushing past Mira and Kael. The child stood in the center of the space, arms lifted, body hovering slightly above the floor. Its silver eyes were wide, glowing like twin moons, and its skin shimmered with flame—not burning, not scarring, but shining with something alive.Caine was already inside, hands up in defense. “Something’s activated,” he said, sweat dripping down his brow. “This isn’t a tantrum. It’s a memory surfacing.”“A memo

The grass beneath Serena’s palm shimmered silver, then faded into gold. It wasn’t magic exactly—it was memory. The land was remembering her.Elias crouched beside her, one hand on her back, gaze fixed on the shifting colors in the ground.“That’s not normal,” he said softly.Serena lifted her hand. “It’s the forest. It remembers.”He helped her to her feet, eyes sharp. “You said something was planted inside you. From before. What exactly did you mean?”She didn’t answer right away. Instead, she looked out across the clearing. The obsidian stones circling the patch of silver grass now pulsed faintly, almost like they were alive.“It’s not just that I called the Gate,” Serena said. “It’s that I belonged to it. Before I ever understood what it was.”Elias frowned. “Are you saying it created you?”“No.” She met his gaze. “I’m saying someone gave me to it.”Back at the camp, Caine studied the child’s aura with narrowed eyes. He sat a few feet away from it, hands glowing softly with trackin

The stars above the Spire hadn’t looked this clear in years. A fragile silence spread across the camp like dew, settling into bones that had forgotten peace. For a moment, the war felt far away. But peace, Serena had learned, never came without a cost—and it never stayed long. She stood alone at the edge of the platform, eyes on the horizon where the last light of the Gate had vanished. Her breath fogged faintly in the night chill, but her pulse was warm. Alive. Behind her, the child sat cross-legged near the campfire, still watching, still unmoving. Its presence unsettled even the wind. Mira approached from behind, tossing Serena a strip of dried meat. “You need to eat.” “I’m not hungry.” “You didn’t eat last night either.” Serena glanced at her. “You’re starting to sound like Lyra.” “Don’t insult me,” Mira muttered, sitting beside her. “Where is she, anyway?” “North wall. Making Kael nervous with her sword twirling.” A beat of silence. Then Mira asked, “You ever wonder

The ash settled slowly. For the first time in hours, maybe days, there was silence atop the Spire. The wind carried the smell of charred stone, burnt blood, and fading magic. The Gate’s silver wound in the sky had finally begun to seal—its edges flickering shut like the last breath of a dying beast.Serena sat in the center of it all, knees drawn to her chest, hair tangled, armor scorched.Elias knelt beside her, watching the horizon cautiously as Mira, Lyra, and Kael made their rounds. His voice was soft. “You did it.”Serena shook her head. “We did it.”“No,” Elias said. “You were the reason the Gate closed. It answered you. Not Darian. Not the Spire. You.”She met his gaze—and for a moment, the weariness in her limbs gave way to something warmer. Something more dangerous.Hope.“You kissed me,” she whispered.Elias didn’t flinch. “You were being impossible.”“You could’ve just yelled.”“I considered it.” He leaned closer. “But then I thought—what if I never got the chance again?”H

The mirrored Spire groaned.Cracks webbed across its surface, snaking up walls and down into the ground, as if the very bones of the realm were breaking.Serena watched as Darian stepped away from her outstretched hand. His refusal wasn’t a declaration of power—it was a choice born of fear. He didn’t trust the Gate’s change. And now, the realm rejected him for it.“Darian,” Serena called, voice steady even as the world around them trembled. “This realm is collapsing. You’ll be trapped here.”His eyes locked on hers, unreadable. “Better a cage I understand than a world I can’t control.”The floor beneath him gave way. A swirl of silver light, like a whirlpool of time and thought, opened beneath his feet. He teetered—his power flickering—then fell backward into it.Gone.Just like that.Serena exhaled, chest tight. Part of her had wanted to save him. Another part knew he had never truly wanted to be saved.Behind her, Elias called out. “Serena!”She turned—just as a fissure tore through
