The temple’s silence pressed against Serena’s ears like a heavy fog. Every breath felt shallow, like the air itself had thickened. The moment the Silent Guard vanished into thin air, it was as if time exhaled around her, releasing its grip.

Serena remained still, one hand clenched around the hilt of the dagger at her hip, the other gripping the ancient book tighter against her chest. The Guardian’s words still thundered in her mind: “The goddess’s blessing and the realm’s curse lie within you.”

A curse? A blessing? How could she be both?

Behind her, Theron took a careful step forward, his armor making the softest clink. He had been silent since the Guard vanished, giving her space to process what she’d just heard. But now, something in his posture shifted — not urgency, but concern laced with something warmer.

He touched her back, just between her shoulder blades. “Serena,” he said softly. “You’re shaking.”

“I’m fine,” she lied.

“No, you’re not.”

She turned to him, and the sight of his face — open, honest, calm in the face of so much unknown — nearly undid her. “Theron, what if I really am cursed? What if this… this power inside me is just a ticking bomb?”

“Then we figure out how to defuse it before it explodes.”

“You say that like it’s simple.”

He arched a brow. “Nothing about you is simple. But you’re not alone anymore. You have me.”

She looked down, then back up, unsure what emotion was clawing at her most — fear, hope, or the growing attraction she could no longer deny. “Why are you always trying to save me?”

“Because someone once gave up everything to save me.” His gaze flickered with something dark, painful. “And I wasn’t worth it. But you are.”

She stepped back, taken aback. “Don’t say that. You’re—”

“I’m not here for pity,” he cut in gently. “I’m here for you.”

Silence stretched between them.

Then, with no warning, Serena crossed the distance between them and wrapped her arms around him. His body tensed, just for a moment, before he melted into the embrace, holding her like she might vanish.

“I’m scared,” she whispered.

“I know. So am I.”

They stayed like that for a moment, hearts thudding in sync.

Then Theron gently pulled back. “Let’s get out of here. I don’t trust this place.”

They made their way out of the temple ruins, the stone paths shifting slightly beneath their feet, as though the temple itself were settling after centuries of waiting. Outside, the air was colder than it had been when they entered. The skies had darkened, clouds gathering low and thick as if the world knew something had changed.

They reached the clearing near the edge of the forest. The same spot they had once stopped at days ago, when all Serena cared about was escaping the palace walls and the whispers of a crown.

Now? Now the weight of that crown felt heavier than steel.

Serena knelt on the grass, opening the old book in her hands. Its pages, despite the age, were pristine. The ink shimmered faintly as if alive. She read a few lines, mouth moving silently, her eyes growing wider with each word.

Theron crouched beside her. “What does it say?”

Her voice trembled as she translated. “It speaks of a binding ritual… one where the chosen must either sever or solidify the divine link. If I sever it, the power disperses into the land, lost forever. If I solidify it…”

Theron’s jaw tightened. “Then what?”

“Then I become its vessel. Entirely. Permanently.” She swallowed. “No escape. No undoing.”

He said nothing for a long moment.

Then, “Which do you want?”

“I don’t know.” She closed the book with trembling hands. “But I want to choose. For once in my life, I want my choice to be mine.”

He looked at her then — really looked. Not as a protector. Not as a warrior. But as a man standing beside a woman who could change the world.

“You will,” he promised. “I’ll make sure of it.”

A sudden rustling snapped them to attention. Theron was on his feet in an instant, blade drawn. Serena stood, clutching the book like a shield.

From the tree line, three cloaked figures emerged. Their faces were hidden, but the magic they carried rolled off them like smoke. Serena recognized it immediately — the same presence she’d felt during the ambush on the forest road.

Elias.

But this time, he wasn’t alone.

The figure in the center lowered his hood. Elias’s smirk was lazy and cold. “Serena,” he drawled. “Theron. I thought I’d give you a little time to play your games. But now? The clock’s ticking.”

Serena stepped forward, refusing to flinch. “You’re late. The war’s already begun.”

He chuckled. “Oh, sweetheart. This isn’t the war. This is still just the prologue.”

Theron moved in front of Serena. “You won’t touch her.”

“Still playing the knight?” Elias tilted his head. “Cute. But we both know your loyalty comes at a price. Has she paid it yet?”

Serena’s eyes blazed. “Get to the point.”

Elias did. “You have a week, Serena. One week to decide where your heart lies. The binding must be completed under the Blood Moon. You can either stand with us — with me — or be consumed by the very power you think you control.”

“And if I refuse?” she asked.

He smiled, slow and cruel. “Then the realm burns.”

With that, he vanished in a shimmer of shadow, his followers close behind.

The clearing fell silent again.

Serena turned to Theron, her hands cold. “One week.”

He reached for her hand, entwining their fingers. “Then we’ll make every second count.”

Where the corrupted medallion had once hovered, only ash and fractured bone remained. The runes carved into the sanctum walls flickered, glitching like a spell unraveling.Serena slumped forward, the silver light around her fading.“Serena—!” Elias was at her side in a heartbeat, catching her just before her body hit the cracked stone. She was burning hot to the touch, but still. Her breath was shallow, her pulse fluttering.“Stay with me,” he whispered, holding her against him. “Don’t you disappear now, not when we’ve come this far.”Suddenly, the floor beneath them trembled. Midnight – Hidden Camp on the Edge of the Cursed ValleyThe sky hung heavy with unnatural clouds, bruised black and red. No stars. No wind. Just the thick, unmoving fog of death.Selene sat by a crackling fire, the flickering flame barely keeping the darkness at bay. It wasn’t wood they burned—there were no living trees here. Lyra had carved dry bone-root from a fallen cursed tree. Even that seemed to burn with reluctance. But the fire gave them warmth, and in this place, that meant something. The group had agreed to stop here—just until dawn. The final strike would happen then. When Darian’s magic was most unstable.Selene stared into the fire. The medallion at her chest pulsed softly, like a heartbeat.Elias approached from the trees. “Can’t sleep?”She shook her head. “I haven’t slept in weeks.”He crouched beside her. “You used to talk in your sleep. Back when we traveled north, remember?”She glanced at him. “About what?”“Your mother. Your guilt. The stars. You always said you w

Northern Forest – Just Outside the SanctumThe wind howled through the trees like a beast in mourning. Kael leaned heavily against Mira as they stumbled through the forest, weaving between twisted trunks and scorched roots. The stars were hidden behind a veil of dark clouds, and even the moon offered no guidance. But Mira knew where they were.“This way,” she said, steering him toward a slope obscured by brambles.Kael winced. “You’re sure?”“I mapped every inch of the cursed valley while Darian ranted about his reign. Trust me.”He coughed, the sound wet and harsh. Mira’s gaze flicked down to his side—blood still soaked the bandages she’d hastily wrapped hours ago. His shifter healing was barely functioning, suppressed by the wards and weeks of magical torment. He noticed her stare and smirked. “Still handsome?”“Still insufferable,” she muttered, but her grip on him tightened.A loud snap cracked through the night air. They both froze. Then—shadows moved ahead.Mira dropped into a c

Deadroot Caverns – Lower SanctumKael’s knees buckled with every step, but Mira kept him upright. The walls of the sanctum pulsed with cursed heat. The deeper they went, the more it felt like walking inside a living creature. Veins of red and black flickered along the stone, humming with the gate’s energy. The gate’s presence wasn’t just physical—it was psychic, invasive. Every breath felt like inhaling smoke and memories not their own.“We don’t have long,” Mira whispered. “He’ll notice I broke the wards.”“How far to the exit?” Kael rasped.“Three levels up. Two locked wards. One blood seal.”“Easy, then.”She gave a faint smirk. “Still cocky, even half-dead.”The sanctum groaned around them, like it had a voice buried deep in its walls. Mira led them through an old stairwell carved from obsidian, hidden behind a crumbled wall that hadn’t been used in years. She’d memorized the passage in silence while serving Darian, always planning—always watching. As they reached the second floor

Darian’s SanctumHidden beneath the Deadroot CavernsKael’s arms ached. His wrists bled where the obsidian cuffs bit into flesh, enchanted to dull regeneration. The cell reeked of damp stone, dried blood, and the metallic tang of corrupted magic. His throat was raw from screaming, but his will hadn’t broken. Not yet.He had been locked here for days—maybe weeks. Time bled strangely in the sanctum, where shadows moved without light and whispers slithered beneath the floor. His strength had waned, but his mind remained sharp. Every detail he saw, every shift in the rituals, he committed to memory. If he survived this, he’d make sure the world never suffered this darkness again.Across the ritual chamber, Mira knelt beside a rune-carved basin, pouring silver liquid into a shallow bowl. Her movements were precise, practiced—too calm. Like someone long used to drowning and pretending the water was air.Kael’s voice cracked. “So this is what you’ve become? A servant to a madman?”Mira didn’

The wind stilled.Time slowed. And in the silence that followed Selene’s awakening, the world seemed to hold its breath. She stood in the center of the broken temple, power curling off her skin in waves of molten silver and black flame. Her eyes were no longer just silver—they burned with the dual light of a full eclipse. The medallion had fused into her chest, pulsing in rhythm with her heartbeat. The energy in the air shifted. Even the shadows hesitated.Elias, blade raised, turned to look at her—jaw clenched, gaze stunned. “Selene…?”She didn’t answer. Her gaze was fixed on the army of corrupted beings pouring from the forest beyond the ruins. Dozens. Maybe more. Shadowborn, in varying degrees of decay and power—misshapen limbs, eyes like pits, fangs too long for mortal mouths. And at the front of them, cloaked in mist and rage, stood Theron. His arms were bare, veins blackened and bulging. The last sliver of light in his eyes was gone, replaced by void. He looked like death incarn
