JACQUELINE

That night, Blair slept faced away from me, her shoulder rising and falling in shallow breaths I could not trust as sleep.

I had left the kitchen after I realized that Blair wasn't going to return. We were not going to have bread with butter instead of jam, and Blair was probably still mad at me.

I went to the room she shared with Amy, heart thrumming with anxiety as I slowly pushed the door open.

Amy was still fast asleep, hand still holding tightly onto Dante. But Blair wasn’t there.

The sight of the empty mattress had filled me with sadness. Had Blair really gone to bed without me?

I tried not to feel discomfort as I swallowed hard and began to walk down the hall and towards Micah's room. The room that we had slept in the last time I was here. If she wasn't in her shared room with Amy, she was definitely going to be there.

Micah’s door had been open, light spilling out faintly from a lamp turned low. The air had smelled faintly of Blair’s body spray.

Blair had bee

JACQUELINEI left the coffee shop after three hours of chatting with Adam, feeling oddly relieved. As we both moved towards our cars, I turned to him with a smile and said. “That was really, really nice.”He smiled back. “Nice enough for a repeat?” His voice was slightly teasing. Yes, nice enough for that.” I answered. Adam, like the gentleman he was, walked me to my car, and as I got in, he leaned against the window the same way he'd done that night when Blair drove my car back to hers. “I think it's finally time for us to exchange contacts.”“I was thinking you'd forget again.” I laughed as I reached for my phone and gave it to him to punch his digits in. As he handed my phone back, I said. “Thanks for the coffee.”“Thanks for your time. Jacqueline.” He responded in a tone that showed he meant it. “Call me Jackie.” I said. He nodded with a smile and stepped away as I put the car into drive. “I'll text you.” He promised. I nodded with a smile and peeled out of the parking l

JACQUELINE“You’re still not okay,” he said finally, quiet but sure. “You don’t have to tell me why. But sitting like this, in this mood… it’s not going to help.”The truth of his words landed with a dull thud in my chest. He was right. I couldn’t even bring myself to check if Blair had opened my message, how was I supposed to sit through hours of lectures? My chest was heavy, my mind frayed, and the thought of listening to Mr. Calloway drone on while my insides twisted felt impossible.I dropped my fork. “Maybe you’re right,” I muttered, more to myself than to him.Adam leaned back a little, watching me carefully. Then, with a slight smile, he tilted his head. “So come with me. Skip class. Just for today. Let me take you somewhere.”Something inside me hesitated. I wasn’t used to being invited out on a whim, not like this. And yet, the weight pressing down on me loosened just a little at the thought of leaving school behind, of not sitting through another lunch watching Blair laugh w

JACQUELINEThe first few days I told myself it was temporary. That if I gave Blair enough space, she would find her way back to me, the way she always had. She just needed time to cool off, to stop seeing my choices as betrayal. I kept whispering that to myself as if repeating it enough would make it real.So I went to school every morning with a quiet determination. I dressed carefully, choosing the little details she used to notice, the ones that made her smile or tease me in that half-serious way. Even in Mrs. Winterthur’s class, I made sure to slide into the seat beside hers, the place that felt like it belonged to me. But each time, she found an excuse. A sudden need to fetch a book. A new partner waiting in the row behind. Sometimes she wouldn’t even glance at me, just sat down across the room as though I carried some invisible infection. The empty chair beside me seemed louder than anything Mrs. Winterthur said.By the end of the week, it wasn’t just the empty chair anymore. I

EZRA Even though we were back at the chamber, I could remember the victorious cheer of my people and the profound respect in their eyes as they had regarded me. Beatrice had been slaughtered by me. A demon wolf who would have taken the lives of many had met her dead. Yet, in the midst of that celebration, Araya had come and had planted fear in the hearts of the people. What was really her deal? Was she not supposed to be my right-hand man? It could be understood that she was trying to be the voice of reason, but couldn't she see that I had done all I could to protect that pack? Why had she thought it wise to question my decision in the presence of the pack!? Was she truly on my side?I was lying on my back, Gyai's warm body pressed contently against mine. I ran my fingers through her hair as I continued to think. Something was not right. I had sensed it the moment I got here... But I hated that I couldn't quite put my finger on what the problem truly was. I had to know. I had t

ARAYAI slipped through the agitated crowd unnoticed, neither my alpha Tades nor the council elders giving me so much as a glance.I walked quickly down the hall and toward the west wing of the court. My pace quickened, my breath hitching. Every few steps I twisted my neck to look behind me, making sure I was not being followed. When I reached the hidden door, I glanced around to confirm there were no servants loitering nearby. Then I pressed my hand against the wall and muttered the magical words I knew by heart. For a second, I feared the door would not open. This meeting had not been planned; the man was not expecting me. But I needed to see him. He needed to be briefed about the new development. The wall parted, and I stepped through. The door slammed shut behind me. I hurried into the dark halls, my footsteps echoing against damp stone, until I reached the throne where He sat, almost as if He had expected me all along.I should have bowed. I should have kept my lips sealed until

  • The Alpha King's Human Mate    Chapter 156

JACQUELINEThe house was too quiet when I pushed the door open. No voices, no footsteps, not even the low hum of the television my mom usually left on when she stayed home. For a moment, I just stood there, clutching the strap of my bag, waiting for something waiting for something...anything. Maybe the clatter of dishes in the kitchen. Maybe my mom’s voice calling out from the living room. But nothing came. Her shoes weren’t by the door, and her jacket wasn’t on the hook. Work, probably. She had left early, earlier than usual. I shouldn’t have been saddened by the thought, but I’d been hoping to return to her, to tell her about Blair and sob against her shoulders. She was literally the only one I had now.I fought the tears that threatened to fall. I wasn’t going to cry again.Dragging my feet toward the kitchen, I tried to convince myself that maybe I could distract the ache in my chest with food. The air smelled faintly sweet, like syrup. When I stepped inside, the sight stopped me
