EZRA

“You can tell your friend to stay in the car while we talk,” I said quietly.

Jacqueline nodded, her throat bobbing. A flush had crept over her cheeks and spread down her neck. The kind of flush that had nothing to do with embarrassment and everything to do with memory. Or maybe lack of it.

Had she really forgotten what she’d done that night?

I watched her as she slid back into the passenger seat, closing the door behind her. She didn’t speak, just stared straight ahead, hands clenched on her thighs like she was trying to hold herself still.

Of course she didn’t remember. She was human. Young. Untrained. And clearly, her tolerance for alcohol was abysmal. I should have known that the moment she stumbled toward me that night, eyes glossy, voice slurring, mouth forming desperate words she probably couldn’t even remember the next morning.

She’d pleasured herself for me in that hotel room, bright blue eyes locked on mine, fingers working furiously between her legs.

I had lost control

JACQUELINEDid she really think I was going to leave her the way Dad left? The thought alone made my chest ache. As my mother sobbed into my shoulder, her body trembling against mine, all I could feel was the overwhelming weight of her guilt pressing between us.“I would never do that to you,” I whispered, my voice cracking. “I’m not like him.”Her arms tightened around me like she was afraid I’d disappear if she let go. “I’m so sorry, Jackie. I was so angry, I became blind to everything else.”“It’s okay, Mommy.” I rubbed her back in slow circles. “It’s alright. It’s all over now.”She pulled back slightly, cupping my face in both her hands. Her eyes were bloodshot, glassy with tears. “I shouldn’t have done that to you. Even if those pictures were real... I shouldn’t have said those things. I should have protected you. I should’ve stood by you.”A sound escaped my throat. It wasn’t quite a sob, not quite a breath...just pain. Because she was right. She was my mother. My anchor. And s

JACQUELINEAmy blinked up at me, her lids heavy and slow, her little fingers curling tighter around the blanket. The meds were finally kicking in.“Will you still be here when I wake up?” she asked, her voice soft and sticky with sleep.I hesitated. I didn’t want to lie. Not to her.“No,” I said gently, brushing a stray strand of hair away from her forehead. “But I’ll be at your house waiting to welcome you home.”Her eyes lit up. “Okay,” she whispered, then turned her head toward Blair. “I like your new friend.”Blair chuckled. "Her name is Jacqueline." Blair grinned. "But call me Jackie." I said to Amy, who nodded drowsily, her eyes beginning to flutter closed. And for a moment, the room felt light. Like none of us had bleeding hearts or bruises, we were pretending not to notice. When Amy finally drifted off, her tiny chest rising and falling with the kind of peace only children seemed to know, Blair stood and gathered a few things around the room. I gave her mom a small wave as

EZRA I drove toward Jacqueline’s house, the steering wheel digging into my palms. The pain had quelled to a dull ache. But it was still there. And I hated that I still felt it. I had tried to keep my distance from the human girl, but it would appear I hadn't done a good job of that. My knuckles went white as reality dawned on me. What the hell was I doing? Racing to my student’s home. What was I going to say was my reason for visiting? I contemplated putting my car in reverse and getting the hell out of here, but I was already in their driveway and could make out Mrs. Blackwell's silhouette on the front porch. She was pacing. I got out of the car. There was no backing out now. I strode purposefully towards her, the encroaching proximity allowing me to see her more clearly. She was in her scrubs, her face looked tired and ashen, and sweat clung to her underarms. I stepped toward her, boots clicking along the wooden planks.“Good evening, Mrs. Blackwell,” I greeted. She froze and

JACQUELINEBlair and I arrived at the hospital, and I fought the urge to sneeze as the smell of antiseptic hit me.Blair gave a small wave to the woman at the front desk, who waved back with a tired smile, then turned back to her screen.“This way,” Blair said softly. I followed her through the hallway. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, and the floor tiles squeaked faintly beneath our sneakers. I felt a weird sense of quiet calm there, which was strange considering the past twenty-four hours had felt like I’d been shoved inside a blender set on high.We stopped in front of a room with partially drawn curtains. I could hear soft voices from inside.Blair knocked gently and pushed the door open, and we both stepped in. The room was painted yellow with little cute flowers and birds drawn on the walls, as if to make the patient’s stay there more exciting. Her sister was propped up on the hospital bed, talking to a woman who was sitting on a chair by her side. That had to be Blair’s

EZRAI stared at the space he’d occupied, resisting the urge to burn the chair he’d sat in.Stupid, untrained human. No sense, no restraint. Just words and threats, thinking they could bend the world to their will.He was lucky I hadn't given into the urge to snuff the light out of his eyes.I sat back down and turned my attention to the stack of papers on my desk that needed attending. But I was not in the mood to mark papers. I needed answers. I got to work on my laptop, pulling Beatrice’s profile back into view. There was no sense in wasting more time on the boy. His threats meant nothing if he wasn’t brave enough to act.Beatrice. That was the real concern.I scrolled through her photos again, trying to see what the demon had seen in her. What had made her a target? She smiled in most of them, arms wrapped around friends, her hair tied up in careless buns, wearing thrifted clothes and drinking bubble tea. There was nothing unusual. Nothing that stood out. No hint of darkness, or
