The forest burned right behind her. Selene could not recall exactly how that first flame began. She only remembered the sound at first. It started as a hiss and turned into a full roar. Then a wall of orange light swallowed up the dark trees, one after another. She ran hard, her lungs burning raw. Branches clawed at her arms while sparks dropped down like evil stars cutting through the overhead leaves.Each breath hurt like an open cut. Smoke filled everything around her. It tasted sharp, like tar mixed with tree resin. Her chest felt stuffed full until her ribs almost broke apart. She tripped over roots that were slippery with ash.
