Chapter 2

Author: Crayon
I floated in the corner and watched Madison run in. She ignored the guards trying to stop her.

"Miss, you can't come in here!" one of the guards called out. He followed behind her with a helpless expression.

"It's fine. Stand down." Keith looked at Madison. His voice suddenly turned so gentle it almost didn't sound like him.

The guard froze. "But Alpha, that's against protocol. Outsiders aren't allowed–"

"How dare you?"

Keith's tone carried unquestionable authority, yet his eyes never left Madison.

"She's with me."

The Alpha who was known for being strict and impartial showed such open favoritism. The guard opened his mouth as if to argue, but in the end, he lowered his head and stepped back.

Keith gently stroked Madison's head. "What's wrong?"

He looked at her. There was a slight frown on his face. "Didn't I tell you to stay home and rest?"

"I was scared." Madison lifted her head. Her eyes filled with tears. "After hearing about this terrible incident, I started having nightmares. I dreamed about those rogues. I dreamed they were tearing open my stomach. Keith, I'm so scared."

Her voice broke as she leaned against his chest.

Keith tightened his arms around her. His other hand patted her back softly. "Don't be afraid. I'm here. No one would dare hurt you."

"But–"

Madison lifted her head from his arms and glanced at the remains on the autopsy table. She immediately shrank back again.

"That shewolf. She was with pup too, wasn't she? I heard her pup was–"

"Don't overthink."

Keith interrupted her. His voice was filled with concern.

"You're different from her. Her mate was irresponsible, but I'll protect you."

Irresponsible.

Floating in the air, I heard that word and couldn't help but laugh.

Yes, we were very different.

She was the one being protected, while I was the one abandoned.

He treated her like a treasure. I was nothing but a nuisance to him.

Madison rubbed against him like a weak animal seeking shelter.

Suddenly, she seemed to recall something and looked up. "Oh right. I received a warning from Juliet today."

Keith frowned. "What did she say?"

"She–"

Madison bit her lip and looked hesitant.

"She told me to stay away from you. She said I wasn't worthy of carrying your pup, and she said if I didn't leave you on my own, she'd make me regret it."

Keith's expression darkened.

"Don't be angry." Madison quickly grabbed his arm.

"Juliet only acted like that because she loves you too much. I don't blame her, really. I'm just scared she might try to hurt my pup."

Her voice grew softer and softer until it was barely a whisper.

Keith took a deep breath and tried to suppress his anger, but his tone had already turned colder.

"She wouldn't dare."

"Don't get upset." Madison rested her head on his shoulder. Her voice was soft and gentle. "She's just heartbroken. After all, I took you away from her."

I stood in the corner and watched the performance unfold. My heart felt completely numb.

Each time, Keith would believe her without question. How was I supposed to prove something I had never done?

"Alright, don't think about it anymore." Keith ruffled her hair. His voice returned to that same gentle tone. "I'll take you home. The smell of blood here is too strong. It's not good for the pup."

Madison nodded and obediently followed him outside.

Once they reached the doorway, she suddenly turned back and glanced at the remains on the autopsy table.

It was only a brief second, but I saw it.

There was no fear in her eyes. There wasn't pity either. Instead, there was a fleeting flash of triumph and a cold smile hidden beneath her fragile mask.

I had seen that look before.

It was the same look on the faces of the rogues who tore open my stomach.

My soul trembled suddenly.

Could she have something to do with my death?

I watched nervously as Kevin crept closer to Keith without making a sound.I wanted to shout. I wanted to run forward and push him away, but my soul passed straight through his body.Keith suddenly turned around. His eyes flashed gold. The instinct of his wolf was surging to the surface. But his body swayed. He was half a beat too slow.Kevin's iron bar was already coming down."Go to hell!"Keith barely managed to turn to the side. The bar slammed into his shoulder. He let out a muffled grunt and staggered backward. His golden eyes flickered violently, but the power simply wouldn't rise.He gasped for breath, and sweat formed on his forehead."What's going on?" he growled while trying to shift. But his body wouldn't obey.Kevin's second swing came immediately after and crashed hard against Keith's head.Keith collapsed."Keith! Keith's voice was hoarse and broken. It sounded like his vocal cords were tearing apart."Juliet, get up. Get up and yell at me."Isn't that what you do best? Didn't you always say I was a jerk? Get up and say it."Get up."He collapsed on top of the scar. His shoulders trembled violently. There was no response. There would never be a response again.I floated behind him and watched him kneel there while crying like a child.'Keith, you had countless chances to recognize me.'Each time, you were so close to the truth.'But every time, you chose not to believe it.'Because you were too confident.'So confident that you believed no one would dare harm your mate.'But what's even sadder is how terrible you thought I was at the same time.'Terrible enough to use a distress signal as some kind of trick.'Terrible enough to fake a disappearance just to make you worry.'Terrible enough to gamble with my own life to manipulate you.'What kind of awful person did you really thi

Madison laughed, but there was a bleakness in it."You want to know why?" She walked over and crouched in front of me. She then grabbed me by the hair and yanked my head up. "Fine. I'll tell you."She held the pocket watch in front of my eyes so I could see the photo inside."Five years ago, during that ambush against Keith, there was a werewolf named Jamie Jennings. Do you know him?"My pupils contracted."Of course you don't. He was too insignificant. But my father," she said slowly. "Was called Jamie Jennings.""Your pack killed him." Madison's voice was calm."I watched him get hacked apart piece by piece. His eyes never left me."I'll never forget that look."In our world, the winner takes all. But that night, my family didn't just lose him."Her hand trembled slightly."My mother was there too! My brother was there! My little sister was also there!"They only went to beg for mercy, but that crazed Keith killed them all."Her voice finally cracked."Your wonderful ma

I floated behind Keith and watched him shout into the empty air. Suddenly, it felt almost funny.'Keith, I'm right here.'But a soul couldn't make a sound. All I could do was watch him yell my name into the empty connection over and over again. He was so fierce and harsh, as if I owed him something.I lowered my head and looked at my transparent hands. It turned out death had its perks. At least I didn't have to be falsely accused and forced to kneel and apologize anymore.Keith's brows furrowed. He pushed harder and forced his way deeper into the connection. As Alpha, he had the authority to compel a response from his mate.He thought I was still sulking and deliberately ignoring him.But no matter how far he probed, the other side remained empty. It was dead empty. He couldn't reach me at all.His heart suddenly skipped a beat.A flicker of unease rose from the bottom of his chest. He opened his eyes. Liam hurried forward to ask about the result, but before he could s

My heart was pounding.Just as Keith was about to step closer to inspect the scar, a female voice suddenly came from behind."Arthur!"The young werewolf turned around. "Eva? You're alive!""Of course I'm alive!" Eva seemed startled by his reaction. "I just got lost. Why are you crying?"Arthur ran to her and pulled her into his arms.He held her so tightly it looked like he wanted to mesh her into his bones. The two of them then turned to look at Keith and Elliott. They bowed deeply to the two in gratitude and left together.Keith stood where he was and watched their backs for a long time without moving.I knew what he was thinking. Those two looked so much like the way we once were.Elliott spoke softly. "Alpha, we've verified it. She really is his wife."Keith nodded and looked away. His voice returned to its usual calm.
