I came back through the pack house door before most of the pack was awake.

Or so I thought.

Luca was in the corridor outside the dining hall with two cups of something hot and the expression of a man who had been there for some time and had decided to pretend otherwise for the sake of everyone's dignity.

He handed me a cup.

I took it.

We walked.

The pack house had a particular quality this morning, a stillness that was not actually still, the way a room full of held breath is not actually quiet

The black line stopped moving halfway across my wrist.I watched it long enough to be certain. It lay beneath my skin like a vein that did not belong there, dark against the pale inside of my arm. The pain had faded to a low burn, but each time I looked towards the seal, it sharpened.Cassian noticed.“Step back from it.”“I already have.”“Another step.”I moved farther into the water. The burning eased.Ezra stood between me and the wall, studying the black roots that twisted through the old carving. He had returned the moon disc to me, but hi

The water reached my ankles on the third step.By the sixth, it covered the tops of my boots.Ezra went first with the torch held low, testing each stair before he placed his full weight on it. The ceiling forced him to bend, one shoulder brushing the wall as the passage curved beneath the river.Cassian followed behind me.I could hear the change in his breathing whenever the steps dropped sharply. He made no complaint, but one hand remained pressed near the bandage beneath his shirt. The cracks above us leaked steadily. Thin streams ran down the walls and gathered around our legs, carrying grit over the stone."How much farther?" I asked.

The guards reached Victor's study minutes after the hearing ended.I went with Darius, though neither of us said why. Part of me expected to find Victor waiting, composed behind his desk, ready to argue that a suspended title changed nothing. He had always been better at staying than at running. The study was empty. Not ransacked. Not overturned. Emptied with the same care he brought to everything, drawers closed, papers squared, the chair pushed in. Whatever he had wanted, he had taken without hurry.Darius stood in the centre of the room and turned once, slowly."His travel case is gone," he said. "The locked one. He kept it beneath the window.""You knew about it.""I knew he never let anyone near it."A younger wolf appeared in the doorway, breathing hard from the stairs."Alpha. The east gate."We reached it faster than my legs wanted to carry me.Two gate guards waited, and I knew before either spoke that something had gone wrong, because neither of them would look directly at D

We kept moving until the river no longer covered every sound behind us.Cassian walked with one hand pressed to his side. Blood had soaked through his shirt and spread beneath his fingers, but each time I slowed, he told me to keep going. The tunnel narrowed, then opened into a shallow recess above the water. The ground was mostly dry, and the stone curved inward far enough to hide the torchlight from anyone following the passage.Ezra checked the tunnel behind us before turning to Cassian.“Sit down.”“I can stand.”“You’re bleeding through your hand.”Cassian looked at the blood as though it had appeared without his permission.“That explains the discomfort.”I stared at him. “Sit.”He did.Ezra took the torch while I lowered myself beside Cassian. The cut ran from beneath his ribs towards his back. It was deep enough to need more than pressure, but the blade had struck at an angle rather than going straight in.“We lost the bandages,” I said.“Use my shirt,” Ezra replied. He pulled

The older Bloodstone wolf’s voice followed us into the passage.“Keep going.”I did.The tunnel bent sharply and dropped beneath the weight of the mountain. Cassian’s torch threw a narrow circle of light ahead of us, barely enough to show wet stone, uneven ground, and the same three shallow marks cut beside every turn.Ezra stayed behind me. Boots scraped over rock beyond him as the Bloodstone wolves entered the marked route. They were done waiting. The sound of water grew until it swallowed everything else. The passage opened beside a river running through the cave, black and fast beneath the torchlight. A narrow shelf followed the wall above it, no wider than my shoulders in places. Spray washed over the edge and left the stone shining.Cassian lifted the torch. The shelf continued for twenty feet before widening at another tunnel. Cracks ran through the middle section, thin near the wall and deeper at the outer edge where the current had worn away the rock beneath it.“That won’t h

Maren’s POVVictor had promised consequences.By midday, Darius had given him witnesses. The senior council room had never felt especially large, but it felt smaller with every chair occupied. Darius sat at the head of the table. I sat beside him, with Harwick, the Beta pair and three senior wolves positioned along either side.A recorder waited near the window with an open ledger.Vivian sat at the far end of the table. She wore dark green, her hands folded neatly in her lap. Luca stood near the door at Darius’s request, no smile on his face for once.Victor entered last. His eyes moved over the room before he took the empty chair halfway down the table. He had expected consequences to happen privately. That had been his first mistake.Darius rested both hands on the table.“This hearing concerns the security hold placed on Aurora Vale, Maren’s decision to release her and the allegations surrounding the suppression of Aurora’s wolf.”Victor looked toward the recorder.“I was told thi
