THE VISTOR AT THE WINDOW

The witches entered Elena’s sanctuary only after she had questioned each of them and ordered the gates kept open. She would not let unfamiliar magic turn her home into a place where her people felt trapped.

Queen Isolde accepted the conditions without protest. Her guards spread through the courtyard, helping Darius strengthen the boundary wards. The other witches carried no chains or cages, only staffs, small crystal lanterns, and bundles of herbs that smelled of ra

THE SLEEPING POWER The sound of the lock turning echoed beneath the sanctuary. For one terrible moment, nobody moved. Then the floor split. A narrow crack appeared between the stones, releasing a breath of cold air that smelled of wet earth and old blood. The protective symbols along the walls flickered. One by one, the candles went out. Elena pulled Lucian against her chest. “Get everyone away from the eastern hall,” she ordered. “Maya should lead the women and children to the upper courtyard. No one comes near this room.” Adrian immediately turned to the warriors waiting outside. “You heard her. Move!” His soldiers hurried away, while Maya appeared at the doorway, her face tense. “Elena, the children are frightened. What is happening?” “Something beneath the sanctuary is trying to get inside. Take them somewhere safe and stay with them.” Maya nodded, then glanced at Lucian. “Be careful.” “I will.” When Maya left, Isolde knelt beside the crack. She held her palm above

THE SECRET BENEATH THE SANCTUARY The three knocks came again. Elena stood beside Lucian’s cradle, listening as the sound travelled through the floorboards. It was not loud, but each knock seemed to vibrate inside her bones. Maura lifted one hand, warning everyone to remain still. “Whatever is beneath us knows we heard it,” she whispered. Isolde placed the black disc on a folded cloth at the centre of the table. Its surface looked ordinary now, but a thin dark line moved beneath it like a living vein. “We cannot destroy this until we understand the connection,” the witch queen said. “The creature that emerged from the ground was not merely following a trail. It was being pulled through one.” Darius examined the disc without touching it. “Can we send the connection back to the burial ground?” “Perhaps. But forcing it open could create a passage wide enough for Malachar’s warriors.” Elena drew Lucian closer. The baby slept against her shoulder, unaware of the danger surroundin

THREE KNOCKS BENEATH THE EARTH The third knock came from beneath the blackened stone. Everyone in the courtyard fell silent. Elena held Lucian close while Isolde raised one hand, warning the others not to approach. The sound came again, slow and deliberate, as though something underground was asking to be let out. “Move away,” Isolde ordered. Maura stepped forward instead. Darius caught her wrist. “Don't touch it.” “I know what I'm doing.” “And I know you are not invincible.” She glanced at his hand around her wrist. He released her immediately, but remained beside her. Isolde knelt and placed a small crystal against the stone. Violet light spread across its surface, revealing thin black lines running beneath the courtyard. “This is not simply a tracking mark,” she said. “It is a passage.” “A passage to where?” Adrian asked. “Something has made a path beneath our wards. I cannot tell where it begins.” Elena looked toward the cellar where the children were sheltering. “

THE WARDS WE LEAVE BEHIND Morning came slowly to the sanctuary. Smoke still clung to the eastern buildings, and the courtyard smelled of wet ash and crushed herbs. The survivors had worked through the night, but the damage was too great to repair in a single day. Elena stood beside the broken gate, studying the blackened stones. Maya joined her, carrying two cups of tea. “You have to drink something,” Maya said. “I will later.” “You said that yesterday.” Elena accepted the cup. “You sound like my mother.” “Then perhaps your mother was right.” Maya followed her gaze. “We will remember them.” “I keep thinking I should have reached her sooner.” “You were protecting the cellar. You cannot be everywhere, Elena.” “I am responsible for everyone here.” “You are their leader, not their shield against every tragedy.” Elena looked down at her tea. She knew Maya meant to comfort her, but the words did not make the grief lighter. Across the courtyard, Adrian gathered his remaining

A GIFT FOR AN ANCIENT HEART The sanctuary had not yet recovered from the vampire attack. Hammers sounded across the courtyard as survivors repaired broken doors, while healers tended to the wounded. Elena moved between them with Lucian close, refusing to let grief keep her from the work waiting for her. Mara had joined the women sorting supplies. Her presence brought Elena comfort. Near the damaged western wall, Darius helped Adrian's remaining soldiers lift a fallen beam. When the work was finished, he looked across the courtyard. Maura stood beneath an old tree, speaking with Queen Isolde. She had lived for ages and learned not to trust affection that could disappear with a human lifetime. Darius, however, had become a persistent complication. He approached carrying a small wooden box. Maura noticed him and sighed. “If that is another invitation to spend the evening with you, save your breath.” “I have work.” “So do I. I finished mine.” “Then find more.” Darius smiled.

THE DEAD AND THE LIVING Beyond the eastern ridge, the surviving vampire warriors carried the bodies of their fallen through a narrow valley. The pale commander walked ahead, his black eyes fixed on the ground. No one spoke. They had entered the sanctuary believing its defenders would break quickly. Instead, they had lost many fighters and returned without the child their king demanded. At the valley's end stood a field of black stones. Their people buried their dead there, beneath the roots of an ancient tree whose branches had no leaves. The bodies were laid in a long row. A priest in dark robes approached, carrying a silver bowl filled with red liquid. “Name those who fell,” he commanded. One by one, the survivors spoke the names of their comrades. The commander watched as the priest poured the liquid over each grave. “Will the king accept this?” one warrior asked quietly. “He will accept nothing,” the commander replied. “Not while the child remains beyond our reach.” A v
