Chapter 4

Autor: Liora Z
The landlord came up the stairs with a spare key, muttering curses.

“Late on rent and you think you can make demands?”

The key slid into the rusty lock. The door swung open.

A thick, sharp stench hit them instantly. Blood and silver, left to fester for over ten hours in a sealed room.

The landlord slapped a hand over his nose and stumbled back.

Maria shoved him aside and rushed in.

On the concrete floor lay an overturned metal box. The white Luna gown lay in a pile of dust.

The shimmering moonstone necklace had rolled into the corner, ignored.

Maria ran straight to the moldy mattress.

“Alina! Alina, wake up!”

She fell to her knees, shaking my body.

I floated above, watching her red-rimmed eyes.

Paramedics rushed in. The lead medic lifted my eyelid, then felt for a pulse on my stiff neck.

He sighed and shook his head.

“No vital signs. Time of death was over ten hours ago.”

Maria collapsed onto the floor, letting out a heart-wrenching sob.

A gust of wind blew through the room. The cracked screen of the phone on the nightstand lit up.

It was still open to my notepad. A year’s worth of expenses.

Rent: 500.

Pack debt: 3000.

Jeremy’s protein bar for tomorrow: 40.

And at the very bottom, my last words.

The pup is gone. I’m gone too. Now, he won’t have to work so hard anymore.

Maria picked up the phone, sobbing uncontrollably.

With shaking hands, she dialed Jeremy’s number.

He answered after a long time.

“Is she done with her drama yet?” Jeremy’s voice dripped with condescension.

“Jeremy, you bastard!” Maria screamed, her voice cracking. “She’s dead! She drank pure liquid silver! Her body is cold!”

The line went silent.

Then, Veronica’s sharp laugh cut through.

“Still trying to trick him? You made up this suicide stunt to force a wedding? Do you really think an Alpha is that stupid?”

Jeremy’s breathing steadied.

“Maria, put Alina on the phone. Tell her this game of scaring me with death is pathetic.”

“She wanted to be Luna. I gave it to her. But don’t joke about the pup. My patience is gone.”

Listening to him, I felt a wave of absurdity.

Even now, he thought I was using my own death to get his attention.

Maria was shaking with rage.

“A joke?” she snarled. “She slept four hours a night for you! Right before she drank that poison, she was still trying to save money for your protein bar!”

“She was so scared of being a burden that she died, taking your pup with her! Are you happy now?!”

The call abruptly disconnected.

Half an hour later.

A black SUV screeched to a halt in front of the building.

Jeremy, in his perfectly pressed uniform, stormed up the stairs.

His breathing was ragged. His brow furrowed. He clearly still thought this was all a drama to force him to submit.

But when he stepped into the hallway, he stopped dead.

Two paramedics were carrying a black body bag out of the room.

The stretcher swayed.

A pale, stiff arm hung from a gap in the zipper.

On the wrist was a cheap bracelet. The two-dollar trinket he’d bought me from a street stall when he first started pretending to be poor.

I’d treasured it. I hadn't taken it off for a whole year.

Jeremy stared at the bracelet.

The color drained from his face.

All the strength left his tall frame. He couldn't take a single step forward.

The arrogance in his eyes shattered, replaced by a raw, creeping horror.

Maria walked out of the room. She walked right up to Jeremy and slapped him hard across the face.

“You thought she was lying to you, didn't you?”

Maria pointed at the black bag. Her voice was hoarse.

“Go on. See for yourself!”

Jeremy stumbled forward, frantic. He ripped open the zipper on the body bag.

And then he froze.

The cemetery was small. No marble headstones. Just a simple concrete slab with my name on it.Maria crouched down and put a bouquet of sunflowers in a vase.“The other flowers are too expensive. You don’t need them anyway,” she said, her voice hoarse. “Sunflowers are tough. Like you.”Jeremy knelt motionlessly before the grave.Maria glanced at him, her tone like a razor.“What’s the point of kneeling all day? She can’t hear you.”“I know,” Jeremy’s voice was a ruin. “I’m just afraid to leave.”He knelt from dawn till dusk, never moving.A week after the funeral, he moved back into that leaky attic apartment.I floated in the corner of the room, watching him squeeze onto a crowded subway, pushed and shoved against the poles. He bit into a piece of cold, hard bread. He gagged on the first bite and doubled over a trash can, retching his guts out. That’s how I used to eat every day. He never knew how hard it was to swallow.A month later, he went to a restaurant kitchen and applied for a

“Are you insane?!”Jeremy’s father’s roar echoed through the office. He slammed a stack of papers on the desk, his knuckles white.“You’re stepping down? You signed away the Alpha title? The Alpha of all of Crestmoon?”Jeremy sat in his chair. The dark circles under his eyes made him look like he hadn’t slept in days. He didn’t look up. He just picked up a pen and signed his name.“Damage control,” his father snarled. “The only thing you can do now is cut your losses. Pin all the blame on Veronica! I’ve already spoken to the Coalition Council. If you just apologize now, we can save a third of the pack’s assets!”“Enough,” Jeremy’s voice was quiet, but it had a finality I’d never heard before. “I don’t want that third.”He pushed the documents across the desk. Half his personal assets were to repay the debt Alina thought she had. The other half was to start a foundation to help rogue Omegas and their pups. His father grabbed him by the collar.“Are you stupid? What good will this money

On the day of the cremation, a dozen black cars were parked outside the funeral home. The Crestmoon pack had booked the entire hall.Staff brought in a huge gift box. They opened it. It was full of jewels and a pure white Luna gown, the symbol of the pack’s matriarch.Maria stood at the door. She kicked the box, sending it sliding back.“The she-wolf dies, and now you decide to be generous?” she sneered, her eyes red. “If she’d had just one of these things when she was alive, she wouldn’t have ended up here.”Jeremy knelt beside the box. He hadn’t slept. He clutched the gown, his eyes webbed with blood.“Let me put it on her,” he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. “Please. Just this once. She is the Luna of Crestmoon.”Maria blocked his path like a wall.“She gave her life to refuse you,” she said, her words sharp. “What right do you have to put this on her now? You never even marked her. What kind of Luna is she to you?”Jeremy’s fingers clenched the white silk, his knuckles white. T

The autopsy report was tossed on the table. A single, cold line: Cause of death, organ failure due to high-concentration silver solution. Homicide ruled out.Jeremy stared at the words. Like he could burn a hole through the paper.“Run it again,” he rasped. “She wouldn’t kill herself. There’s been a mistake.”The Coalition’s medical examiner just shook his head and left.I floated behind him. Watching this once-arrogant Alpha cling to his last shred of denial.Maria walked in, carrying a cardboard box. She slammed it down in front of Jeremy.“These are all her belongings,” she said, her voice hard and cold. “See for yourself if it’s worth a hundred bucks.”The box held a few old clothes. A pair of worn-out shoes.Jeremy’s hand sifted through them, then froze. He pulled out a yellowed pawn ticket.“Moonstone pendant, five hundred dollars,” he read aloud. His pupils shrank. It was the only thing my mother left me. A raw stone, blessed by the Moon Goddess herself, or so the stories said.

The paramedics tried to push my gurney into the elevator. Jeremy clung to the edge.“I’m going with her,” he rasped. “She’s afraid of the dark. Always has been.”Maria let out a sharp, cold laugh.“Afraid of the dark?” She stared at Jeremy, her eyes full of hate. “Last night, at your Alpha ceremony, you raised your champagne glass and told the whole pack, ‘She would never turn this down.’ Did you even think about where she was then?”The color drained from Jeremy’s face.He didn’t argue. He just followed the gurney, refusing to fall a single step behind. The morgue’s metal door slowly closed in front of him. Before the metallic clang even faded, Jeremy threw himself against it.“Open the door!” He slammed his fists against the cold steel, his voice a feral roar. With enough werewolf strength to shatter rock. “Open the damn door!”Security guards tried to stop him. He threw them aside. Several grown men crashed to the floor.Veronica finally caught up, out of breath, her sunglasses croo

The body bag unzipped. Jeremy’s shaking fingers brushed my ice-cold skin.He snatched his hand back. Like he’d been burned.“Impossible.” His voice trembled. He spun around, roaring at the paramedics. “What are you waiting for? Help her! Now!”The doctor frowned. “Sir, death has been confirmed…”“I said help her!” Jeremy’s dominant Alpha aura exploded without warning. A guttural growl that sent everyone in the hallway stumbling back.He threw himself over me. His hands pressed against my chest. He squeezed his eyes shut and released his calming Alpha scent—a sharp, frantic smell of fir.It was the one scent an Omega craved above all others.
