Chapter 3

Autor: Katerina
That evening, Sienna added me to a group chat called [How Long Will the Luna Wannabe Last?] Every member was one of Adrian’s friends.

[I give her till midnight.]

[As if she’d really walk away from the alpha and the Silverpine Pack.]

[Loser buys dinner for a week.]

Sienna sent a voice note: [She wants everyone to know her feelings were hurt so Adrian will come running. If she meant to leave, she wouldn’t have canceled the ceremony where he could see it.]

Someone asked how she could be so sure. She replied in another voice note: [I’ve seen plenty of status chasers. You think a woman that close to becoming Luna would throw it away? Come on.]

Adrian was in the chat. He didn’t say a word, and he didn’t stop them. I left. Seconds later, Sienna added me again.

[Don’t go yet. Tell us when you plan to beg him to take you back.]

I left a second time and blocked invitations from strangers.

Half an hour later, an unknown number called. “Am I speaking to Mr. Blackwood’s partner? He was exposed to wolfsbane on patrol. The emergency department is trying to save him.”

My thumb froze above the screen. Sienna had tried something much like this two years ago.

I’d been taking the qualifying exam for an overseas project. At the call, I left the final section blank and drove to the clinic. I pushed open the observation room door to find them crowded around takeout containers and drinks. Adrian was in the middle of it. When he saw me struggling to catch my breath, he laughed along with the others.

“Look at her,” Sienna had said. “One scare about the alpha and she forgets her whole career. Afraid your shot at Luna might disappear, Evelyn?”

The year after that, my mother was in the hospital with acute gallbladder inflammation. She needed surgery the next morning. They claimed Adrian had gone missing in the woods. I asked a neighbor to stay with Mom and drove five hours back, only to discover another “test.”

I’d told Adrian it wasn’t funny. He’d held me and promised he wouldn’t let Sienna pull another stunt. I’d believed him.

“His family and the pack doctor are there, aren’t they?” I said into the phone. “If someone needs to authorize treatment, call them. We’re no longer together.”

For a second, nobody spoke. Then Sienna’s laughter came down the line. “Oh, you figured us out. Pretending you don’t care isn’t going to scare Adrian into chasing you.”

I ended the call. I texted Mom that I’d be working in Canada for a few years and would call when I landed. She sent back a hugging emoji and told me to take care of myself.

For a moment, I stared at our messages from the night before her surgery. She had told me to go home and rest. She’d found out afterward why I’d left instead, and she’d been furious—not because she needed me at her bedside every second, but because someone who knew she was sick had used it to make me run. I’d defended Adrian then. I said he hadn’t known what Sienna had told me. Mom had asked whether he believed me once I explained. I had no answer.

Now I typed [I’ll call you when I land. I love you.] and put the phone away before I could talk myself into another explanation for him.

At the airport the next morning, a coworker messaged me as I approached security. Adrian’s assistant had called to ask if I’d really resigned. Sienna, standing beside him, had said I was trying to force an earlier mate ceremony. He’d hung up before my coworker could answer.

My flight was called. I glanced back toward the entrance. Adrian wasn’t there.

Then Sienna sent me a video of him sitting in the same restaurant as last night, his friends waiting for me to crawl back.

What he didn’t know was that I wasn’t coming back.

Adrian stood in the lobby with the cuff-link box in his hand. He looked down at it before he finally spoke.“I can change.”“Maybe you can,” I said. “I don’t want to spend more years finding out.”After the first fake emergency, he’d promised to stop his friends from playing games with me. When my mother was hospitalized, he’d said Sienna didn’t mean any harm. At our anniversary dinner, he’d known I’d spent weeks choosing his gift. He’d still asked me, in front of everyone, whether all I wanted was the Luna title. He had loved me. He had hurt me. I could hold both truths without going back to him.“Tell me what else I can do.”“I did tell you. I asked you not to laugh when I was frightened for you. I asked you not to let Sienna walk into our home whenever she wanted. I asked you to stop people saying I was trading my feelings for a title. You heard me every time.”His eyes reddened. “Give me one more chance?”“No.”I didn’t raise my voice or wait for him to argue.“Do you still love me

The following morning, Sienna posted a long statement in the pack’s social group. She claimed she’d only been protecting her alpha. Other people had joined in the jokes, she said, but now Adrian wanted me back and had made her the villain to make himself look good.Old screenshots appeared within minutes. She’d suggested the first fake emergency. When I’d said my mother needed surgery, she’d called the medical records I sent “easy to fake.” Even the people who’d laughed with her could see how often she’d started it.Someone replied: [You said you’d apologize if Evelyn really left. When are you doing that?]Sienna deleted the comment and accused Adrian of forgetting everything she’d done for him. The pack’s finance office recalled the vehicle assigned to her and asked for the house keys. Friends who had once crowded around her began to keep their distance. A few admitted they’d joined in and sent me apologies of their own.One message came from a woman Sienna had mocked for accepting an

I called Adrian after he left the restaurant. I didn’t want to wonder what Sienna might say on my behalf every time there was news about the baby.“Did you get the follow-up results?”“I did. What did the doctor say?”“Everything looks good so far. There’s another check next month.”He let out a breath. “And the cuff links—I found out what happened at the store. I should never have listened to her.”I stood in the corridor outside my apartment. The lake was visible between the buildings, darkening as the sun went down. “The saleswoman was standing right beside us, Adrian. If you’d asked me one question, I would’ve told you. I had the report in my bag. I was going to hand you both surprises together.”“I know. I’m sorry.”“The first time Sienna told me you were poisoned, I raced to the clinic and you saw everyone laughing. The second time my mother was waiting for surgery. I asked you to stop them using emergencies to test me. You knew how much it hurt me then. You didn’t need a sales r

The second time I abandoned a posting overseas, my suitcase had already been by the door. Adrian had held me and said that if I stayed, he’d make sure we set a date for our ceremony. I thought he didn’t want to lose me. I withdrew my application the next day.Maybe he really hadn’t wanted to lose me. But afterward, Sienna told him I’d used the job offer to pressure him into making me Luna. He never asked me if it was true. He simply filed it away as another sign I was playing him.At the restaurant, his assistant explained the dates on both applications. On the day of my first missed exam, Adrian had only had a mild allergic reaction. The doctor had kept him under observation until evening. Sienna had told me he’d been exposed to wolfsbane and was fighting for his life. The following year, she knew I’d qualified for the project and told Adrian I was testing whether he’d finally give me the Luna title.“You knew it wasn’t serious the first time?” he asked her.“He was at the clinic,” Si

Canada was colder than I expected. I’d barely stepped outside the terminal when I found the project car waiting. The driver loaded my bags, and Mara called while I was putting on my seat belt.“How was the flight? Your apartment’s close to a clinic. I’ll go with you to register on Monday.”“Thanks. I’m fine to work.”“I know.” She laughed. “I hired a project lead, not a patient. Tell me if you need a day off.”The road ran beside a lake I’d only ever seen in photographs. I’d turned down this posting twice without finding out what it felt like to stand here.An unfamiliar number called my personal phone. Thinking it was the landlord, I answered. Adrian spoke before I could say hello.“Did you get there safely?”“Yes.”“Are you feeling all right? I saw the report.”I looked out at the water. “I was going to tell you on our anniversary.”He went quiet. “I’m sorry. I’ll come over. Could we talk face-to-face?”“You can ask about the baby. I’ll tell you what I know. There’s nothing else to d

Adrian checked my flight status over and over. Across the table, Sienna insisted I was waiting at the transfer airport for him to call.“She knows you’ve found out about the pregnancy. If you go after her now, you’ll be handing her exactly what she wanted.”He ignored her and dialed my number. The recorded message said my phone was off. He tried again, then opened our old messages. Before our anniversary, the last thing I’d sent him was a photo from the dress shop. I’d asked which gown he liked better. He’d chosen the dark blue one and promised to come to the next fitting once work settled down.He had looked forward to the ceremony. He’d wanted me to be happy that day. And yet, the moment Sienna had questioned my motives, he’d acted as though none of that had ever happened.“She isn’t waiting for me to give in,” he said.“How would you know?”“She canceled the fitting. She sent our things back. And she made a follow-up appointment for the baby without me.”Sienna’s smile thinned. “Pre
