Chapter 2

Author: Rosemary
Before leaving, there was only one person I wanted to say goodbye to. Once I did, nothing would keep me here.

“Back to visit Shelter Mother again, are you?” The keeper of Moonrest Cemetery recognized me and greeted me with a smile.

Every year around this time, I came to see Shelter Mother, the elder who had taken care of me at the rogue shelter. Every homeless wolf there had called her Mother.

I placed a bouquet of moon lilies before her grave.

“Shelter Mother, I’m leaving.”

A gentle wind brushed past me, and the woman in the photo still looked as kind as ever.

I left Moonrest Cemetery and wandered through the streets without direction. Sweetness drifted from the bakery nearby, and I suddenly remembered the cakes Drake used to buy me long ago.

They had only been cheap cream cakes, but back then they had tasted truly sweet.

My phone began vibrating nonstop.

“Happy birthday.”

It was a message from the Frostvale Pack, followed by a large moonstone transfer. Even when I refused to return, they still sent blessings on every holiday and special day.

Two hours earlier, Scarlett had updated her MoonNet feed with two movie tickets.

Without realizing it, I had walked to the old site of the rogue shelter.

It had been rebuilt into Luna Park and was still crowded even at night.

“Selene.”

Scarlett saw me and ran over, a smile hidden in her eyes.

“You’re here too? I was feeling upset today, so Drake insisted on bringing me out.”

Her sudden closeness made me uncomfortable on instinct.

Then a strange smile flashed across Scarlett’s face. She grabbed my hand and fell backward.

A motorcycle roared toward us and sent both of us flying.

From Drake’s angle, it looked exactly as if I had pushed her under the wheels.

Drake’s face darkened visibly the entire way.

Scarlett’s forehead and leg were bleeding heavily, but he never once looked at me, even though my face had gone pale. My right hand had been crushed under the motorcycle, and it no longer felt like part of my body.

When we were taken to the pack border healing ward, the healer told Drake there was only one healer on duty tonight.

“Treat Scarlett first. A girl can’t be left with scars,” Drake snapped the moment we arrived.

Scarlett’s forehead and leg looked frightening, but anyone with basic sense could tell they were only surface wounds.

The healer glanced at my twisted right hand and hesitated.

“Alpha Drake, we can treat Miss Scarlett’s injuries, but this young lady is hurt much more badly. If her hand is not treated in time…”

“Treat Scarlett first.”

Drake’s order allowed no argument.

My face had gone almost transparent.

If I lost this hand, I would never again be able to paint battle totems onto the fur of my wolf form. The markings strengthened a wolf in battle and belonged to the Frostvale bloodline, a secret craft my birth mother had only just begun teaching me.

Drake glanced at me impatiently.

“Selene, your wolf heals fast. What is a small injury like this to you? Stop pretending. Scarlett is only an Omega. She is much weaker than you, and she needs treatment more.”

It felt as if a silver blade had pierced straight through my heart.

He was right that my healing had once been strong.

A month ago, when the Moonfang Pack attacked Blackwood territory, I had burned through all my wolf energy to stand in front of Drake. I took a fatal strike from the enemy Alpha for him.

After that battle, my wolf energy was nearly drained and had fallen into a dormant recovery state. Even now, my healing ability was gone. I could not summon even a trace of wolf power.

This injury was no different from one suffered by an ordinary human.

But he had forgotten.

He had forgotten all of it.

He only remembered that Scarlett was an Omega, weak and in need of protection.

He had forgotten who took the claw for him under the full moon. He had forgotten whose wolf energy was still asleep, slowly trying to repair itself.

Scarlett dragged her “injured” body toward him and leaned weakly against his chest.

“Drake, can I be treated first? My hand hurts so much…”

“Selene, why do you keep targeting Scarlett?”

Golden wolf-light began to rise in Drake’s eyes.

“Don’t forget, you were once a rogue. If I hadn’t taken you in, you would have died at the border.”

“From today on, Scarlett is my family. Don’t even think about hurting her again.”

“If not for you, she would never have been injured. Your skin isn’t even broken, so stop acting.”

He shoved me aside with one sweep of his hand.

I fell onto the cold stone floor, my right hand hanging at a twisted angle by my side.

Only then did he finally realize something was wrong.

“Selene… are you okay?”

I did not answer.

Not long now.

Soon I would be gone, and none of this would matter anymore.

Scarlett’s sentence from the United Pack Council came quickly. As an accomplice in Drake’s brother’s death and the one responsible for selling Blackwood’s defense maps, she was sentenced to permanent exile.A punishment crueler than death. She would wander the borderlands forever, rejected by every pack, unwelcome at every moon altar, with no priestess willing to offer prayers for her soul.As for Drake, as Alpha of the Blackwood Pack, he had failed to uncover Scarlett’s betrayal and had even allowed her to act unchecked within the territory, indirectly leading to his brother’s death. The Council stripped him of his Alpha title for three years. During that time, Blackwood would be governed by the elders.Orion was the one who told me all this. His tone stayed calm, as though he were merely reading a border report unrelated to Frostvale.“There’s one more thing,” he said after a pause.“Drake has chronic poisoning from border herbs.”I looked up.“During all those years in Blackwood, Sc

My mother and Lady Silvermoon looked at me with aching eyes.I smiled and comforted them.“It’s over now.”The parchment Orion gave Drake and Scarlett contained more than the termination notice for Frostvale’s support. It also contained evidence that Scarlett had been selling Blackwood’s defense maps for years.Worse, Drake’s brother had died because of her.The border ambush that killed him had happened because Scarlett leaked the patrol route. Drake’s brother was forced to hold the line alone and died fighting.Scarlett returned to Blackwood as his grieving widow and put on the mask of a fragile, harmless woman. When Drake looked at Scarlett, cold spread through him from the bone. The person he had protected so desperately all these years was the murderer who had helped kill his own brother. The fragile flower he protected was the real poison all along.Because of her, he had lost the Selene who had stayed by his side since they were fifteen. He had cast aside the girl who grew besid

“That really looked like Selene,” Drake said, his face turning pale.“Don’t be ridiculous. That is the Frostvale heiress. Frostvale…” Scarlett’s voice suddenly stopped. She bit her lip, panic flashing through her eyes.Only after they were seated did they see Orion escort me to Karl Silvermoon’s side. The smile on my face seemed to hurt them.On the moon altar, Silvermoon’s chief elder stood beneath the Moon Goddess totem. His aged voice carried across the entire altar.“Selene Frostvale, do you accept Karl Silvermoon’s mark at the side of your neck, allowing your moon energy to bind with his from this night forward, sharing life and death until the Moon Goddess calls your wolf souls home?”“I object!”Before the elder could finish, an unwelcome voice cut through the ceremony.Drake stood up.I glanced in his direction.Orion and my parents’ faces darkened instantly. I had not said much, but they had long noticed something was wrong. Once they investigated, they learned what I had endu

I was still wearing the moonvine brace when we began choosing my ceremonial battle robes. My mother and Lady Silvermoon accompanied me into Silvermoon’s ancient weaving chamber. One by one, the pack weavers presented robes crafted from moon-silk beneath the full moon, each glowing silver beneath the light.Every set earned endless praise.“Karl truly got lucky.”“Our Selene looks beautiful in everything. She has the aura of an Alpha by birth.”I smiled until the weavers brought out the final robe. The moment I saw it, I froze. The patterns woven into the fabric were identical to the markings that had first appeared across my wolf fur three years ago during my awakening. The forgotten crest of the Frostvale bloodline. That night, moon energy had erupted from my body and formed those markings beneath the moonlight. A passing Silvermoon elder had recognized the ancient symbol immediately. And from that moment on, Karl knew I existed. As for the moon-energy blessing awakened alongside thos

By the time I arrived in Frostvale territory, the alliance contract with Silvermoon had already been waiting for me.The agreement had existed since the day my Frostvale bloodline awakened. I had simply been the last person to know. The next morning, the news spread through the werewolf world like wildfire. The Frostvale Pack and the Silvermoon Pack had officially entered a mating alliance. Their marking ceremony would take place under the next full moon.My parents looked at me with aching eyes, along with my older brother, Orion Frostvale. All three of them stared at my injured hand as if the sight alone hurt them.“How did it get this bad? Does it still hurt?” my mother asked, her voice trembling.“Not really. It just might not look very good during the ceremony,” I said softly.A pack alliance was tied to the honor of both bloodlines. I could not help feeling guilty.“Your health matters more. The ceremony can wait,” Orion said flatly, though anger simmered beneath his calm voice.

I was in too much pain to speak. When I looked at Drake, a trace of despair finally rose in my eyes.So this was what my future and my life were worth to him. Less than a scratch on Scarlett’s skin.Fortunately, the head healer arrived in time, so Drake no longer had to choose. The moment the healing ward doors closed, whatever remained between us felt as if it had been cut clean. From then on, we owed each other nothing. When I woke, Drake was standing beside my bed with a cold expression.“Awake? Scarlett needed more than a dozen stitches. None of this would have happened if not for you. Her room is upstairs. When you feel better, go apologize to her.”I looked at him as if he were a stranger.“I did nothing wrong,” I said quietly, while my heart sank little by little.“If you refuse to apologize, don’t come back to the territory. And there is no need for another marking ceremony.”After saying that, Drake left in anger. He never noticed that his threat no longer had the power to hur
