“Lucien!”

Kael's scream followed the Alpha into the darkness.

The black chain dragged Lucien across the broken floor, its links burning with the same five-circle symbol that had appeared on his chest. Lucien fought against it, his boots carving deep marks into the stone, but every movement only made the chain tighten.

Kael refused to let go.

His fingers locked around Lucien's wrist.

“I'm not losing you!”

Aurelian glanced over his shoulder.

“You already have.”

He closed his fist.

The chain jerked.

Lucien's hand slipped from Kael's grasp.

For one terrible instant, their fingers remained connected by nothing more than their fingertips.

Then they separated.

Kael lunged forward, but Caelan caught him around the waist.

“Let me go!”

“Kael, stop!”

“HE'S TAKING HIM!”

“And if you follow him like this, you'll die before you reach the door!”

Kael struck his brother's arm.

Caelan released him immediately.

Kael stumbled forward, ready to chase Aurelian, but the stranger had already reached the shattered entrance.

He turned once more.

“Bring the Moon Crown to the fifth kingdom,” he said. “Come alone, and your mate may survive.”

Kael's eyes burned silver.

“And if I refuse?”

Aurelian smiled.

“Then we will open his heart without you.”

The darkness swallowed them.

The chain's metallic scream faded into the distance.

And Lucien was gone.

For several seconds, Kael could not move.

He stood staring at the empty doorway, his hand still extended, as though Lucien might somehow return if he waited long enough.

Then the fortress shook.

A section of the ceiling collapsed.

Rowan rushed toward him.

“My king, we have to leave!”

Kael did not respond.

His mother grabbed his shoulders.

“Kael, look at me!”

He finally turned.

His face was expressionless.

That frightened her more than anger would have.

“Tell me where the fifth kingdom is.”

The Crimson Queen hesitated.

Seraphine answered from behind her.

“Beyond the Veil of Ashes. It cannot be reached by ordinary roads.”

“Then we'll find another way.”

“You don't understand. The Veil separates the living kingdoms from the realm where the fifth bloodline was imprisoned. Crossing it requires a living heart capable of surviving both sides.”

Kael looked down at his chest.

“The second heartbeat.”

Seraphine nodded.

“But if you cross the Veil while the fragments of Azrael's heart remain connected to you and Elara, you may awaken the fourth bloodline completely.”

“Then I'll awaken it.”

“Kael—”

“He is my mate.”

The words rang through the ruined chamber.

Kael looked at each of them.

“I don't care what the fifth bloodline wants. I don't care what my father promised, what the first pact demands, or what any of you believe I was born to become.”

His voice broke.

“I love him.”

The admission left him exposed.

He had spent so long refusing to forgive Lucien, insisting that love could not erase the humiliation of the rejection. He had told himself that keeping his distance was the only way to protect his heart.

But when Aurelian had pulled Lucien away, none of those defenses had mattered.

He had only wanted him back.

Kael swallowed.

“And I'm going to bring him home.”

No one argued.

Not even Seraphine.

Because every person in that chamber understood that the decision had already been made.

They reached the abandoned Moon sanctuary shortly before dawn.

The journey was a blur of falling stone, collapsing tunnels, and desperate attempts to escape the fortress before the entire structure came down. Rowan led them through an underground passage known only to the old Moon Guard, while Darius and the Crimson Queen helped carry the injured.

Kael barely noticed the journey.

He could still feel Lucien's wrist beneath his fingers.

He could still hear his final warning.

Don't let them open my heart.

Those words followed him into the sanctuary.

They followed him as he washed the blood from his hands.

They followed him as Elara sat beside him in silence.

And they followed him when Seraphine finally placed an ancient map on the stone table.

“The fifth kingdom was called Elysium,” she said. “It was ruled by the first sovereign of the fifth bloodline. Unlike the other kingdoms, its power was not drawn from the moon, shadows, or blood.”

Kael stared at the map.

“What was it drawn from?”

“Memory.”

He looked up.

Seraphine continued.

“The fifth bloodline could preserve, alter, and transfer memories. They could remove the memory of a face, erase the memory of a death, or make an entire kingdom forget that someone had ever existed.”

Kael thought of Lucien.

His forgotten childhood.

The woman he had suddenly remembered.

The palace of white stone.

“That's why he doesn't remember his brother.”

“Yes. And perhaps why he doesn't remember the woman who gave birth to them.”

The Crimson Queen lowered herself into a chair.

“Who was she?”

Seraphine's expression darkened.

“Queen Isolde. The last ruler of Elysium.”

Caelan, who had been standing near the window, turned sharply.

“Isolde?”

Seraphine nodded.

“You know that name?”

Caelan looked down at his hands.

“I heard it in the seal. Every time I woke for a moment, someone was calling for her.”

The sanctuary grew quiet.

Kael looked at his brother.

“Why would you hear the name of a queen from another kingdom?”

Caelan did not answer.

Instead, he approached the map and placed one finger on the center of the fifth kingdom.

“There was another voice,” he said.

“What voice?”

“A woman's.”

His face tightened.

“She kept telling me to remember the child in the second cradle.”

Kael felt a chill.

“What child?”

Caelan slowly turned toward him.

“I thought she meant me.”

He swallowed.

“But now I think she meant Lucien.”

Far beyond the Veil of Ashes, Lucien awoke beneath a white sky.

He was lying on a cold stone table.

His wrists were bound by silver restraints, and the five-circle symbol on his chest glowed beneath his torn shirt.

For several seconds, he could not remember where he was.

Then he remembered Kael.

He tried to sit up.

The restraints tightened.

“Don't struggle.”

Aurelian stood beside the table, removing a pair of black gloves.

Lucien glared at him.

“Where is Kael?”

“Safe. For now.”

“If you've harmed him—”

“You will do what? Threaten me?”

Aurelian leaned closer.

“You still believe you are the Alpha of Black Fang. You still believe your wolf belongs to you. You still believe your life began when King Draven took you into his home.”

Lucien pulled against the restraints.

“Who am I?”

Aurelian's expression softened.

For the first time, he seemed almost sorry.

“You are Lucien Isolde Draven, second-born son of Queen Isolde of Elysium. You were taken from this kingdom when you were an infant and placed in the care of a man who feared what you would become.”

Lucien's breathing slowed.

“Second-born?”

Aurelian nodded.

“I was born first. You were born seven minutes after me.”

Lucien stared at him.

“Why did they take me?”

“Because our mother made a choice.”

“What choice?”

Aurelian turned toward the enormous glass chamber behind him.

Inside it floated a silver heart.

It beat slowly, suspended in a web of black chains.

Lucien felt an answering pain in his chest.

Aurelian watched his reaction.

“Your wolf was never an ordinary wolf. It was the guardian of the fifth bloodline, placed inside you to protect the heart of Elysium.”

Lucien struggled against the restraints.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Everything.”

Aurelian placed his palm against the glass.

The silver heart beat again.

Lucien screamed.

His body arched against the table as memories flooded his mind.

A woman holding him.

A lullaby.

A little boy standing beside his cradle.

A voice whispering that he must never let the heart awaken.

Then a memory he had never known he possessed.

Queen Isolde, holding both her sons against her chest.

If one of you must become the lock, let it be the child who can survive the darkness.

Lucien's eyes flew open.

He looked at Aurelian.

“What did she do?”

Aurelian's face became cold.

“She gave you to King Draven.”

Lucien went still.

“No.”

“She chose you to become the lock that would keep the fifth bloodline imprisoned. She chose me to inherit the throne.”

Lucien shook his head.

“You're lying.”

“Am I?”

Aurelian gestured toward the silver heart.

“Your mother sacrificed your freedom to preserve this kingdom. King Draven agreed to raise you as his own, provided you never learned the truth.”

Lucien's chest burned.

“And the command to kill Kael?”

Aurelian smiled.

“That was not your father's command.”

Lucien's blood ran cold.

“Then whose was it?”

Aurelian leaned close enough for Lucien to see his own face reflected in his brother's eyes.

“Your mother's.”

The restraints tightened.

The silver heart began to beat faster.

And from somewhere deep within Lucien's chest, his wolf spoke for the first time since the command had taken control.

“Brother, don't let him open the heart.”

Pain tore through his wrists, and the unfamiliar symbols carved into the stone beneath him flashed white. Kael could not look away from the figure beyond the mountains. It had Lucien's face. The same sharp jaw. The same dark hair. The same cruelly beautiful eyes that had once watched Kael stand alone beneath the full moon while an entire kingdom laughed at his rejection. But the figure wore no crown. It did not need one.The world itself seemed to bend around it.“That's impossible,” Lucien whispered. He had managed to stand, though his legs trembled. One hand remained pressed against his chest, where the five interlocking circles glowed beneath his skin.Kael turned toward him.“Do you know who that is?”Lucien shook his head.“No.”His answer came too quickly.Kael noticed. So did the boy standing beside him.“You're lying,” the child said.Lucien's gaze snapped toward him.“Be careful what you accuse me of.”The boy laughed bitterly.“You always say that when you remember something you don't want anyone else to know.”Lucien went still.Kael looked between them.“What does that mean?”

Black veins spread from his heart toward his throat, forming the same ancient symbols that had appeared on Kael's palm.Kael dropped beside him.“Lucien! It was the desperate howl of something being dragged away from its owner.Kael gripped Lucien's shoulders.“Fight it!”Lucien lifted his head. His eyes were black, but a thin silver ring remained around each pupil.“I am trying.”His voice sounded strained, almost distant.“Kael, listen to me. If I lose control again, you have to—”“No.”“Let me finish.”“No!” Kael shouted. “I have spent my entire life being tol

Azrael was smiling. Not the cruel smile of a conqueror who had finally defeated his enemies. Not the satisfied smile of a prisoner who had escaped centuries of confinement. It was the smile of a father who had just heard his daughter remember him.And somehow, that made it more terrifying.“Say it again,” he whispered.Elara stood trembling in the middle of the chamber. Black tears ran down her cheeks, but the silver in her eyes burned brighter with every passing second.“Mother killed me before I was born.”Elaris took a step toward her.“No, my little moon. You don't understand what you remember.”Elara screamed.“Don't call me that!”The force of her voice shattered the remaining windows. Glass exploded outward, scattering across the courtyard below. The shadows rushed toward her, gathering around her body like a cloak.Kael moved instinctively.“Elara, look at me.”She turned toward him.For a brief moment, he saw the frightened child who had called him brother beneath the fortres

Whatever you hear, do not answer her!”Elara's smile disappeared.“Why?”“Because that is not your mother!”A deafening crash shook the fortress. The doors split down the middle.Silver mist poured through the opening, crawling across the floor like living water. The temperature dropped so sharply
