We continued our aimless walk until we got far into the edge of the town. The two betas stood closer than before, and one whispered into the other's ear. “We'll be turning back from here,” one muttered. “Stay here and don't try anything foolish, or you'll regret it.” I felt uneasy because I had nowhere to go. Then the two went deeper into the forest for only the goddess knows what. I know the betas of Iron Fang. They were trained to be watchful men, taught through blade and blood. Not fearing the beta of our pack means not knowing our Gamma, my fearless father. I sat on the scattered leaves and sand, staring into empty space like someone waiting for fate to decide their life. “Don't move,” a voice called from behind me. It sounded like someone running. I quickly stood up and turned back. The tall, muscular wolf started grinning from ear to ear. “What do you want from me?” I shouted. My wolf groaned inside me, ready to attack him if he moved closer, but I didn't want to move because I thought he might be stronger than me. Tears started falling from my eyes. Before I could think of an idea, he grabbed both my arms and sank his claws into my flesh. Blood dripped out. My wolf groaned, and I grabbed him by the neck. I managed to twist his head backward. As he struggled to pull off my lower cloth, he suddenly fell to the ground and started shaking like someone having a seizure. As I looked around to see who had done it, my body was already giving in to the ground because of the pain I suffered from the rogue. The two betas appeared from nowhere and stood over the rogue's body on the ground. They looked at me in fear, checking my injuries. They carried me away. I knew they dared not let Varlok know how this happened. Thanks to healer Kiara, she gave us a potion to apply to my body when I was taken to her place. Before we left Kiara's place, I was already feeling normal again. The following day, I headed straight to the healer's house, and the two betas followed me again but stayed outside. Inside Kiara's house, Camela and Mila sat facing Kiara in what looked like a serious conversation. I even heard Camela mention Golden's name. As Mila turned and saw me, she quickly stood up. “What are you here for, loser?” I tried to understand what she meant but failed. “Anyway, I don't want trouble with you. As you can see, I'm here to see the healer,” I replied. “You better not try anything stupid, or you won't like what happens to you next.” Her eyes burned with anger as she said every word. “Do you mean you will kill me or what?” I asked as tears blurred my vision. I struggled to stay calm. “Mila, first of all, what do you mean I shouldn't try anything stupid?” I said, confused. “I think, as my stepsister, you should care about what may be wrong with me instead of worrying about yourself just because I am here.” “Who cares what's wrong with you? Useless piece of trash fighting for what was never meant for her,” Mila fired back as she moved to block every possible way I could escape. “Let me go,” I protested as she spread herself to block my path. “I think that's Elena there, Mila,” Kiara called out. “Let her come in.” Mila angrily stepped aside and folded her arms as she watched me walk toward healer Kiara. “You are welcome, Elena,” Kiara greeted me. “Elena, you will have to give me a few minutes while you wait in the other room.” “Why is she here?” Camela quickly cut in. She looked closely at the healer and Mila, who had just returned to her seat, waiting for an answer. I agreed and walked to another area away from where Kiara was attending to her visitors. On my way, Kiara rushed to me and quickly pulled me into another room, where she gave me the healing potion I had come for. “Take this, and you should leave immediately,” she said, her eyes darting around as if she feared someone might hear her. I immediately turned to leave. As soon as I got outside, I felt a painful hit on the hand holding the potion. The bottle fell, and as I held my hand in pain, I turned back and saw Mila. She was breathing hard and holding a short plank. She rushed forward and picked up the fallen bottle. At once, I realized I needed to avoid Mila completely. I had finally accepted that my stepsister was wicked. I was her target, and that could lead me to an unthinkable fate. “This is it, right? You came for this. Then hear me well. The goddess is on my side and won't let you embarrass me, you unlucky enemy of progress.” I stood still, staring at her in shock. As she turned her face back, she saw the two betas who had escorted me there. I quickly realized she had landed herself in trouble.Elena's POV We continued our aimless walk until we got far into the edge of the town. Elena POV.We finally landed in the pack house as something jagged, something that never quite settled in my bones. The deltas had still been shoveling me around like I weighed nothing, like I was nothing, until the alpha snapped at them. I didn't expect kindness from him. Not ever. So when he reprimanded them for the rough handling that began all the way from my father’s house, it startled me. Briefly. Foolishly. Because the moment he ordered them to lock me up, confusion surged back, sharp and suffocating. The house looked the same, unchanged, almost mocking in its familiarity. Large, medieval in structure, with polished wooden floors that glittered under careful finishing. It still radiated that ceremonial life: the constant cooking, the unending hum of activity. I had once imagined belonging here. I had once wanted it. Now, I stood inside it knowing I was walking straight into something that would break me.Part of me felt a fragile, shameful relief to be associated with the pack
Elena's POVIt's morning, and I was at my father’s house. Everyone was preparing to go to their respective roles. I was preparing to go to the pack house for my cooking role for the pack. I would be preparing dinner that day, but I needed to arrive in time to set things ready and get other servants’ assistance. Then suddenly, the door bursted open.Even now, I hear it. The violent crack of wood against the wall.Four young, body-fitted men stormed in one after the other. My father rushed out. I knew it was because of the noise caused by the sudden jerk of the door.Seeing the men who had caused the chaos, he rushed toward them, one leg already raised before he even reached the first. I read his face. I saw it clearly. He was furious. As our pack’s gamma, they had crossed their boundaries.“Whap!”Before the men could move further after spotting me and stepping forward, one received a fast, snapping kick from father. It sent him flying, spiraling downward, his head crashing against the
Elena's POV It moved me, and I cut in before I could stop myself.“It is fine, mother. I am confident that Mila and her mother learned their lesson in hard ways on how to treat everyone with empathy.”I detest seeing her in tears. I hate that I can’t figure out an effective way to expose Mila’s plot right away. I can’t tell my mother…it will only hurt her more. Now I need to avenge myself and restore my mother’s dignity.I sipped the rest of my wine, though it burned more than it soothed. “I had rushed to you to ask what you think about the mating run father said is happening soon.”“Yes, Elena, it is on the 3rd of the waxing crescent. Today is the 25th day of the waning crescent, so 5 nights to go,” mother says calmly.“Mila’s mother said whether I like it or not, it is highly possible that Varlok chooses me because he might narrow his search down to me and Mila. She would just have to inform Varlok that Mila is already marked by the alpha prince, his nephew,” I relayed, and even no
Elena's POV “She went to look for a male… She’s unhappy for me because Golden chose me,” Mila cut in, her face suddenly serious.I immediately thought of reporting what I overheard Mila and her mother, Camela, say. But no way. Camela knows how to make me look like a lunatic. Like I’m hearing things that never happened. I clenched my fist, anger foaming inside me, but forced myself to stay calm, even as the situation drained me.“Nothing used to give her concern,” Camela pointed out flatly.I stood still, rehearsing a lie I could tell. Something like I was at the pack house, performing my duties, tending to domestic chores and setting up the pack hall with others. But that seemed too much. What if they discovered the truth? My shame would be intense.“I was beginning to think you were in the forest today. Alpha Varlok has ordered an inquiry about any she-wolf who might have been in the forest this afternoon,” father reiterated, this time brushing his eye ball with mine.“Tell the trut
Elena's POVKnowing he probably couldn't wait to see me, I put on my best lingerie beneath a silk armless top that pronounced my bursted frontIn excitement, I slipped through the door leading to his room, but what I saw killed all the excitement immediately. My stepsister was fully undressed. Golden, the alpha prince, was kissing her madly. His hands worshiping every part of her body as though I had never existed.I struggled to repress the shame that suddenly penetrated me, sharp and merciless. They were so lost in the moment that they did not notice me for the first three minutes. I stood frozen, watching something I should never have seen.It was my stepsister, Mila, who first noticed me, and she immediately enveloped Golden with her arms, shielding him from looking at me.“Elena, I think you have eyes to see for yourself that he likes me so much. So nothing to talk about,” Mila whispered with her eyes half open.“I cannot explain this better right away.” Golden immediately cut in
