She hesitated. “I… I just got back.”

His eyes darkened. “From where?”

Aria’s lips parted, but she struggled to speak. Not now.

Kael stepped closer, his scent enveloping her. Her heart skipped.

“Do you have any idea what time it is?”

“I do, my lord,” she whispered, her eyes fixed on the ground.

He tilted his head slightly to the left, his voice dropped low. “Then why does it feel like you're always showing up when I least expect… and need you the most?”

Silence.

And then… he leaned in, his fingers brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

Aria froze. Her breath caught. She raised her head slowly… and their eyes met.

Kael stopped.

He had never seen her eyes this closely before. They were grey. Unreadable, like they hid more than they showed.

His breath faltered. For a moment, the weight of his rank, his vow, and his ‘integrity’ felt distant.

But then…

He blinked.

And stepped back quickly, as though he had broken a rule.

“Get some rest,” Kael muttered, his voice sharp, his eyes av

“Run it back,” Beta Darian said, leaning forward on the table, his hands clasped.Lucan stood straight, still dusty from the patrol. “They weren’t rogues,” he said. “At least, not the kind we’re used to. The tracks were… strange. Too deliberate. And they didn’t scatter when we engaged them.”Aria kept her eyes low. “The markings on the trees were the same as the ones we’ve been warned about,” she said, “but something felt… staged. Like they wanted us to see them.”Darian nodded slowly. “How many?”“Five,” Laura answered. “All of them fought like rogues, but they weren’t starved. And they fought to the death. Only the last one fled, and she was a young wolf.” Darian’s jaw tightened, but his tone stayed calm. “You did well to handle it and make it back alive. I don’t care what anyone says; walking into an ambush and coming back is no small thing.”Lucan turned his head slightly, but his eyes stayed on his father. “What now?”Beta Darian tapped the table. “At dawn, we’ll ride to the bor

  • The Alpha’s Bane    The Night Hunt.

“…I’m telling you,” Caspian said as Aria twisted his wrist and shoved him to the ground, “the Alpha’s been gone too long. What’s he even doing there?”“He just left…” Aria started. “Politics,” Ember answered, hopping over Riven’s back. “What else do the Elders want? They’ve been nagging about borders since spring.”“Or about the rogues,” Riven added, grunting as he tried to sweep her legs again. “They’ll want answers about the truce.”“And you know the Alpha,” Aurora said from the sidelines, tying her hair back. “If they push, he’ll push back twice as hard.”“Exactly,” Caspian said, dragging himself up and brushing dirt off his arms. “And that’s why it shouldn’t take this long. He doesn’t like being told what to do. Ever.”“Unless he likes who’s telling him,” Ember muttered with a grin. That got a few scattered laughs.“What’s that supposed to mean?” Aurora asked.Ember shrugged, feigning innocence. “I mean, maybe they’re not just talking borders. Maybe the Council wants him to settl

  • The Alpha’s Bane    Summoned.

The night smelled different here. Thicker. Ancient. Kael shifted back to his human form as the towering gates of the Council fortress stood ahead, his six guards doing the same behind him. They were silent, their breathing steady, their eyes fixed on the stone walls that stretched toward the sky.“Alpha Kael of Nightfang,” the sentries at the gate announced, their voices echoing through the walls. The doors opened with a light groan and the first thing Kael saw was firelight, the torches lined the path ahead, and drummers stood on either side, beating a slow, heavy rhythm. Then came the dancers. They stepped into the path barefoot, their bodies painted with the colors of the Council. Every movement was deliberate, calculated. The arms swaying, feet striking the ground in time with the drums, it was a dance of welcome, one Kael had seen a hundred times before, but never enjoyed. Nightfang was a pack of warriors. They didn’t dance. They conquered.Kael walked forward anyway, his blac

  • The Alpha’s Bane     Whispers In The Yard.

Aria, Mira and Lira walked into the Shadows training hall. Wolves lingered around in the hall as they walked in quietly. The hall felt different today. Less sharp. Less watchful.“Warm-up laps,” General Thorne barked. The Shadows started jogging. Mira groaned under her breath. “Tell me why I have to do this every morning.” “To keep your legs from turning to sticks,” Lira shot back, smirking as she ran past her.Aria stayed quiet as she jogged behind them. But her mind wasn’t on the laps. It kept circling back to what Lira had seen; Kael, gone before dawn with guards, no explanation.By the third lap, Selene appeared, her boots hitting the ground. She didn’t even look tired.“Enjoying private dinners with the Alpha now?” Selene said as she passed Aria, voice low enough to sound casual but it carried a sting. Aria didn’t flinch. “You seem more bothered about it than I am,” she shot back.Selene smirked, slowing her pace just to jog beside her. “Oh, I’m not bothered. Just curious what

  • The Alpha’s Bane    The Council’s Call.

The Beta Chamber was quiet. Selene sat cross-legged on a low stool behind Laura, her fingers pulling through Laura’s long brown hair, weaving it into a tight braid. Laura had one leg hanging up on the edge of her chair, lazily sharpening her dagger against a stone. Lucan lay across the couch by the wall, one arm resting on the side rest, tossing a coin and catching it as it fell.“Stop pulling,” Laura muttered, wincing slightly.“I wouldn’t have to if you’d stop moving your head every two seconds,” Selene replied dryly.“Maybe if you weren’t trying to braid it like you’re prepping me for war.” “It’s practice,” Selene cut in smoothly, pulling the braid tighter. “One day I might be doing this in the middle of a battlefield. You should be grateful I’m fast.”Lucan snorted. “Remind me never to let Selene braid my hair. I’d come out bald.” Selene smirked. “You don’t have enough hair worth braiding.”Before Lucan could talk back, the door creaked open.Beta Darian stepped in, calm as eve

  • The Alpha’s Bane    Shadows At Work.

The smell of sweat and dust lingered in the Shadows training hall. Aria rolled her shoulders, ignoring the burn in her muscles as she faced Selene in the combat ring. Mira stood off to the side, her arms crossed, watching closely. Lira leaned against the post beside her, also watching. Selene smirked. “What’s the point of being the Golden Wolf if you can’t stay on your feet?”Aria tightened her fists. “You talk too much.”“Oh? Then hit me,” Selene said, frowning. “If you can.”The other Shadows lingered around lazily. Sparring wasn’t unusual, but when Selene stepped in, it was always a show—one they’ll like to watch. Lucan’s voice called out from the edge of the circle. “Breathe, Lyra. She’s fast, but predictable. Use it.”Aria gave him a quick glance, then focused on Selene.“Eyes here, pup,” Selene said, and then she bent, moving slowly, aiming for Aria’s ribs.Aria blocked, barely. Selene’s fist hit her arm, but she didn’t drop.“Better,” Lucan called out.Selene came at her aga
