Chapter 4

Author: Peachy
That mark was a sting.

Even from so far away, my werewolf hearing picked up their conversation from the terrace.

"Don't worry, Isabella," Damon's voice was gentle, reassuring. "I'll find the right time to deal with the bond with Elena. For good."

Deal with it.

Like a problem to be solved.

"Really?" Isabella's voice trembled with feigned insecurity. "But the Elders said a simple rejection doesn't fully sever a fated mate bond..."

"Then we'll perform the full severance ritual," Damon's tone was firm. "At the next full moon, in front of the entire pack. I'll make her disappear from my life forever."

"But what about the toll it will take on you..." Isabella feigned concern.

"For our future, it's worth it."

I shut off my enhanced hearing and sat back down.

There was no pain in my chest, not like I expected.

Only a sense of relief.

"Heard enough?" Sera asked.

"More than enough." I picked up the pen and signed my name on the contract. "He's making this cleaner than I thought."

"Good." Sera raised her glass. "To new beginnings."

Our glasses clinked, the sound sharp and clear.

After our meeting, we walked to the restaurant's parking garage together.

"Elena, I have something for you." Sera pulled a sleek car key from her purse.

The fob was inlaid with a small crescent moon emblem that sparkled under the lights.

"What's this?"

"Your new ride." She gestured to a spot in the garage. "Custom Maserati. One of only fifty in the world."

I pressed the unlock button.

A short distance away, a sports car's lights flashed.

Its body was sleek and bold, like a swan about to take flight.

"Sera, this is too much..."

"Elena." She looked me right in the eyes. "A rejected Luna can't lose face. You need to show everyone that you're better off without him."

She was right.

If I was going to start a new life, I had to make it more brilliant than my last one.

"Thank you." I took the key, feeling its warmth in my hand.

"That's your commission from your last project. You earned it," Sera said, patting my shoulder. "From now on, you work for you."

I drove the new car back to the apartment.

As I pulled into the underground garage, I saw a familiar figure leaning against a pillar.

Damon.

His arms were crossed, his expression dark. He'd clearly been waiting for a while.

"Elena." His voice echoed in the empty space. "Where were you?"

I got out and grabbed my bag.

"Dinner."

"With who?" He followed me. "You're back late."

"A friend."

"What kind of friend requires you to dress up like that?" His tone grew colder. "Elena, given your... situation, it's not appropriate for you to be meeting with outsiders."

Outsiders.

An interesting choice of words.

"And who, exactly, is an 'outsider'?" I stopped and turned to face him.

"Anyone who isn't a member of the Black Stone Pack," he said, as if it were obvious. "Especially our competitors."

"Like Sera?"

"Exactly like her!" Anger flashed in his eyes. "Elena, how could you be consorting with the Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack? She's only using you!"

Consorting.

What a disgusting word.

"And what's with the car?" He pointed to my new Maserati. "A limited edition, that's at least four hundred thousand. Where did you get that kind of money?"

His eyes were filled with suspicion and a possessive glint.

As if I were still his property.

"I earned it."

"You earned it?" He scoffed. "Elena, all your design fees are turned over to the pack. You don't have that kind of money."

Turned over.

Like an underling reporting to a superior.

I didn't answer, just kept walking toward the elevator.

"Elena!" His voice, laced with his Alpha command, boomed behind me. "I'm talking to you!"

The elevator doors opened, and I stepped inside.

He followed me in.

In the confined space, I could smell that sweet, cloying Omega scent on him again.

"You need to tell me what you did tonight." He slammed his hand on the stop button. "As your former mate, I have a right to know where you are."

Former mate.

And he still thought he had rights.

"Damon, you're mistaken about one thing." I stared directly into his eyes. "You have no rights whatsoever."

"No rights?" His eyes flashed, a flicker of his wolf's gold surfacing. "Elena, you are still living on my territory!"

"This is my apartment."

"But you are still within the jurisdiction of the Black Stone Pack!"

Jurisdiction.

Such arrogant logic.

The elevator reached my floor.

I stepped out, and he followed close behind.

"Elena, what did you and Sera talk about today?" He followed me into the living room. "Are you two plotting something?"

I walked to the coffee table and pulled a folder from my bag.

If he wanted to know so badly, then I'd let him know.

I pushed the folder toward him. "You should take a look at this."

One year later.I stood before the newly completed wing of the Louvre in Paris, my greatest professional achievement. Adrian stood nearby, talking with investors, his eyes catching mine with a proud, loving smile. We had been married for two months, in a beautiful ceremony surrounded by our closest friends. Life was a perfect, harmonious blend of love and work. That evening, we walked along the Seine."Two years ago, I thought my life was over," I confessed, leaning my head on his shoulder."And now?""Now, I feel like it's just beginning," I said.Adrian stopped, turning to me, his eyes alight with a joy so profound it took my breath away. He gently took my hand and placed it on my stomach. He didn't say a word, just looked into my eyes, waiting. It took me a moment to understand. My own senses, heightened by my connection to him, picked up on the subtle shift. A change in my own scent. A faint, nascent spark of a new life within.Realization dawned. "Adrian, are you saying…?"

Six months later."Elena, TIME magazine wants to put you on the cover," Lisa reported. "The theme is 'The Woman Who is Rebuilding the World.'"The Crescent Moon Pack was now a global design powerhouse. My reputation was solidified. That evening, Adrian took me back to the forest where we first ran together. The air was alive with the scents of pine and damp earth. Under the light of the full moon, he knelt."Elena Martinez," he said, his voice resonating with an Alpha's sincerity. "My pack is nothing without its Luna. My life is nothing without my mate. Be my wife. Be my forever."He opened a small, hand-carved wooden box. Inside, the ring wasn't a diamond. It was a band of moon-silver, intricately woven around a rare, glowing moonstone that seemed to pulse with its own life.Tears streamed down my face. "Yes," I choked out. "Yes, Adrian, I will marry you."He slid the ring onto my finger, a perfect fit. He pulled me into an embrace that felt like forever."I'm going to make you

A week later, I asked Adrian to meet me at the restaurant where we had our first real date."Elena," he said, his voice cautious. "You look… better.""I've been thinking," I said, getting straight to it. "About what you told me.""If you can't forgive me for hiding it, I understand—""Adrian," I interrupted. "One question. If there had been no mission, no Isabella… if we had just met at a party, would you still have fallen for me?"He paused, and then a genuine, heart-stopping smile spread across his face."Elena, the mission put me in your path. That's all it did. Falling in love with your brilliance, your strength, your heart... that was inevitable from the moment we first spoke.""And now that the mission is over?""If you'll have me, my plan is to spend the rest of my life proving my love is real. If you won't… I will respect your decision. But I will never forget you."I looked into his eyes and saw my future."I've decided to trust you, Adrian."Relief washed over his face. "Real

Three days later, I stood before Damon's gravestone at the Blackstone Pack grounds. He was buried a hero. My heart was a heavy, complicated knot of grief, anger, and a strange, quiet sorrow."Elena." Adrian's hand rested gently on my shoulder. "It's time to go."I nodded, took one last look, and walked away.Isabella, revived but magically broken, was imprisoned for life in a Council facility designed to contain dark magic users.Weeks bled into a month. I worked, I built, but Damon’s sacrifice was a ghost at my shoulder. One night, under a full moon, I went to his grave."You were a fool, Damon Blackstone," I whispered to the cold stone. "A cruel, arrogant fool. But you died an Alpha. Rest now."It wasn't forgiveness. It was closure. That evening, Adrian took me to the beach."Elena, there's something I have to tell you," he said. "I'm not who you think I am."My blood ran cold. "What do you mean?""My family... the Whitmores... it's an alias. Our true name is far older." He took

The line on my phone was dead. The lights flickered and died, plunging the office into an eerie twilight."Elena…" a venomous voice whispered from the shadows. "I've missed you."Isabella materialized in the center of the room. She was a ruined version of her former self, her skin ashen, her face twisted, her eyes burning with a mad, red light."You destroyed me!" she shrieked. "My love, my future, my family! All gone because of you!""Those were your choices.""I have nothing left to lose! But you… you have everything."She raised a hand. A ball of crackling black energy shot toward me. I threw myself to the side just as it hit the wall behind me, which didn't just dent—it dissolved, turning to black dust."You die tonight, Elena!"I scrambled around the office, dodging her frenzied attacks. Just as she cornered me, the door burst open.Adrian burst in, a blade forged from moonlight humming in his hand."Elena!" He moved with impossible speed, blocking a blast of dark energy mean

Our relationship was a whirlwind of professional triumphs and quiet, personal joys. Adrian was the perfect partner—thoughtful, supportive, and fiercely proud of my independence. Then, one afternoon, the front desk called. "Ms. Martinez, there's a Damon Blackstone here to see you."The name was a ghost from another life."Tell him I'm busy.""He says it's urgent. It's about Isabella."My blood ran cold. "Send him in."Damon walked into my office. He looked older, more worn. The arrogant swagger was gone, replaced by a heavy weariness."Elena, thank you for seeing me," he said, his voice humble."What about Isabella?""She escaped," he said, his expression grim. "Broke out of the Wastes three days ago.""What?" I shot to my feet. "How?""Dark Moon connections. Bribed guards. Our sources say she's already back in the city.""What does she want?""Revenge," Damon said, a haunted look in his eyes. "On you. Elena, let me protect you. It's the only thing I can do to atone. Her grudge agains
