Fuck... why did I bother coming back to this place?
I returned this afternoon to High Moon with my half-brother and future Beta, Thiago. We had different mothers, of course, but shared the same shitty father. He was a few years younger than me, but we were more like best friends than siblings.
From the age of seven, he was trained to protect me. I used to tease him about his smaller stature but now... he was built like a pitbull. Short and stocky, with muscles shredding his thighs and upper body. What he lacked in height, he made up in stealth and pure strength. And never did I doubt his loyalty; he was my best friend.
We were the black sheep among the warriors, even though we were father’s sons. The men that fought and protected my father thought they were above pack law. I think father molded them this way. Forged them this way.
I kept a handful of my own Gammas, loyal only to me. Though we attended the normal pack functions, we were not allowed to associate with the rumored reward parties that went on after-hours.
It was those men that traveled to the northern border with me for the last two months. When the King first touted the idea of expansion, I jumped at it without hesitation. We looked to expand the King’s holdings, which would also extend my reign. Borders were outlined and preparations were already set for a new pack den. Construction and planning was arduous, but I was happy to get away.
Father and I had an awkward relationship growing up. He was never the warmest person but through the years, he grew even more ornery and quick tempered. Pack members of the High Moon obeyed and acknowledged that he was their Alpha but only through fear. Subjects were beaten or worse for minor infractions, a side effect of his old age and ailing demeanor. So, it was common for pack members to scatter when he and his men made their way through the town.
Yet, whatever qualms people may have had about his temperament, the Alpha was an ingenious strategist. I was next in line for succession; however, we agreed that since he had no plans on leaving the throne soon, I would expand our forces. High Moon was located at the southern tip of the region and I would head upwards and set up a new territory on the northern side. Once established, I would claim myself as Alpha and I could either chose to remain in the northern realm or take over my father’s pack once ready.
Either way, our forces and influence would be doubled in the realm.
As Alpha, I promised myself to command through respect and good governing, starting with strengthening all territories that I planned to oversee in the future. I knew some of the smaller packs needed better defense mechanisms against rogues. Father knew this too but that may have been his intention. He often took advise from the Red Witch and she warned of allowing the lower packs too much strength. The Alpha at current had no fear of an uprising. That was also why he didn’t fear me relocating to the opposite end. No one would challenge his claim.
I mind-linked my father and he told me to meet him in the Council Room. I could tell he was in the middle of pack business, but he would still want a debrief of the boarder planning and building permits.
“Lucas, you’re back,” the King exclaimed as I entered with Thiago. He seemed in good spirits as he sat at the helm of the board table. There, he was accompanied by the Red Witch, Beta Braxton, and a couple advisors. They all nodded as I walked in, with the exception of her. That woman... she made my skin crawl.
But as I strolled over to sit next to my father, a scent so forceful, slapped me in the face. My eye twitched; a fierce growl escaped my curled lips as I sniffed at my father.
“Mine!” my wolf, Dax yelled.
The King looked at me, puzzled. The witch’s eyes sharpened, suspiciously.
“What the fuck,” Thiago mind-linked with his head still bowed. His lowered eyes darted at me, anxiously. Dax was jumping, nervously inside me. He bounced like a penned circus animal, scratching to escape. He howled and whined to the point where I couldn’t focus.
I shook my head. “Sorry father. Long travels... maybe I need to rest,” I lied, attempting to explain away whatever was going on in my head.
“I have to get out of here,” I mind-linked my beta. “I don’t know what’s up but Dax is going crazy. I can’t be near my father right now.”
The King looked me over with narrowed eyes. Finally, he nodded, “Settle in and we’ll debrief later. Beta Thiago can attend the advisory meeting in your place.” I bowed, respectfully.
“Thank you, father,” I said to him as I turned to walk out. The witch’s glare burned through my back as her gaze followed me out. As soon as I felt the conference doors shut behind me, I hurried through the long corridor. Dax’s tail wagged, excitedly, following the scent.
My heart was pounding out of my chest; adrenaline raged through my system.
Whatever this smell was, it was all over my father. Why was this captivating odor of sweet honeysuckle and orchid drenched in the foulness of his sweat and heat? My face was growing hotter. I followed the delicious aroma to my father’s office and knew it was trapped behind his padded cell.
My forehead pressed against the wall next to the door. Fury fueled my step but a hint of anxiousness bit at the back of my throat. I had to collect myself; had to prepare myself for whatever was in that room.
I steadied my hand as I pushed the door open.
***GiselleAll night, I had been in this shit heap. The Blue Box.Every time I got in a fight – box. Every time I mouthed off – box. Every time I refused to do chores fit for a slave – box, box, box. But when they pulled me out, my face flushed red with an impenetrable fury and always… the same ragged snarl. Same nail-biting sneer emerged. To remind them who I was.The unbearable heat of the July sun rolled in, sweltering and thick, searing the skin from my back. Pools of sweat soaked through my top as my blistered and calloused hands wrapped around the bars of my mini jail cell. But if the men of Iron Claw thought they would break me, they had another thing coming. This was a work pack, the lowliest of the packs where criminals and convicts were set to work the mines and suffocate in the grueling summer blaze. It barely rained, almost never cooled. Only a glimmer of a breeze passed once nightfall finally came. But by then, your body ached and muscles cramped, nothing that a br
***AriesOur wolves frolicked and ran through the forest for hours. After shifting back, we cooled off by wading in the calming pool as the falls fell at our backs. We explored each other’s bodies once again and found ourselves naked on the grassy shore, wrapped in each other’s arms. The sun warmed the glistening beads of water from our skin and I traced my fingers along the tattoos stretched down his arms. We watched as the radiant hues stretched across the edging horizon. No fear swelled in my chest. No anxiety of the witch’s return panicked my insides as it neared sunset. It was only the two of us. Finally together. He kissed my forehead and pulled me closer, as if reading my thoughts. My mind was quiet, as serene waves washed over and tickled my feet. I placed my lips softly upon his, bathing in his warm caress. I laid my head on his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heart. His hands began fumbling with the wet strands of my hair.“Are you… are you playing with my hair?
***AriesFather walked me to the foyer. Bandages wrapped around his back, pulling tight across his shoulder. He embraced me and offered a half smile. I placed a hand on his arm; I didn’t need an escort for what was about to happen. I turned, lifting my chin and walked through the double doors, out through the entrance where she waited.Giselle.She tilted her head up. Those furious eyes glared at me. Soldiers stood beside her, one on each side, as her gaze raked over me with disdain. Voice sneered, “If you’ve come for an apology, you’ll be waiting a long time.”My face was void of any emotion, silent and still. Calm washed over me and I smiled.“Not at all. I’ve come to thank you. Had you not enlisted the help of the Shadow Boys, I never would have found Reinn. He was the one person that could have killed the witch and released me from this curse,” I gleamed, my eyes dazzling with victory. She scowled.I continued, “But you… you’ll never be free of whatever Hell you’ve chosen. You’re
***ReinnI pressed my head to her throat, buried myself in the familiar scent of my mate. Her skin had already grown cold against my mouth. I lapped anxiously at her wound, metallic grit coating my tongue. But it wasn’t working. She wasn’t waking… wasn’t responding. Her lips turned blue. Her flesh paled, the flush of her cheeks waning.“Please Goddess! Please save my Aries!” I begged the heavens above. She was too good, too pure to die now. I had defeated the witch, cursed her to this forsaken place for all eternity but still, Aries hadn't come back to me. My hands trembled as they curled around her pallid face. Blood covered my hands as I smeared trails across her chin. I pulled her to my bare chest, enveloping her with all the warmth and energy I could muster. The Luna ran to me, dropping to her knees at the sight of her bloodied child. She held Aries’ hand as she cried into her palms. Her eyes pleaded with mine, to do something. To save her. The Luna had just gotten her back... all
***ReinnThe Luna screamed a blood curdling cry as her arms clung to him. He crumpled to the floor and she followed suit, unable to keep him upright.Linc and I rushed to his side as I peeled off my shirt, applying pressure to the wound. But the blood kept coming, a river of red painting the ground under him. Pained groans murmured from his mouth as the Luna wailed beside him. His skin paled. The shock in his eyes, to see the witch attack in his daughter's very own skin.“You monster,” I hissed. Red only tilted her head, amused. She pulled a vial from her dress and placed it on the altar. I lowered my gaze, pretending to remain occupied with the Alpha as she took off the top and placed it to her lips, swallowing the contents. Within seconds, Red began to seize, shaking violently as she fell to the podium floor. I raced up the altar.“Gemini, do you feel her? Do you feel Aries’ wolf?” I urged, legs mounting the steps two by two.“Barely. It won’t be long.” That meant any moment I woul
***ReinnI exited... more like flew through a narrow passage and finally found myself on the other side, basking in lamp light. Once I knew that thing was far behind me, I hunched over placing my hands on my knees and sucked in a deep breath. My hand was still shaking and I had to force a fist to keep it still. That thing, masked in Aries' skin... Aries' body, had been in my head, burrowing through my thoughts. Imbedded in my feelings… combing those nightmares that plagued me since I was a child. Those night terrors that kept me from sleeping more than a few hours at a time. The ones that woke me in a cold sweat. But not when I was with her. With her in my thoughts, I had no room for the past. For my regrets.I walked out and a podium stood affix with an altar in the center. Two marble pillars were placed on opposite sides of the dias. Magic illuminated the vast space, ceiling rose as high as my imagination. A thick sense of unease swallowed me from the room, invisible eyes watching m
***ReinnI watched as Dawn put her hands on Aries' waist, seductively lowering them down to her hips. The men around me howled and whooped, watching the spectacle unravel. She was the new toy in town, pretty and perfect. And everyone had their eyes on her.A possessive growl recoiled in the back of
***AriesThe band played music on the side opposite the bonfire. The fire radiated, crackling in a hypnotic dance as heat draped over my torso like a winter blanket. Orange embers floated into the night like fireflies, drifting away from the blazing light. The comforting aroma lynched itself into m
***Aries“Class, this is Ms. Aries,” the teacher, Mrs. Walker, instructed as she worked to quiet the giggling classroom. In unison, the children cried out, “Hi Ms. Aries.” Bright, beaming faces looked up at me as I stood at the front of the room.It was a class of 15 to 20 children, around the ages
***AriesI trotted down to the stream with a stack of paper and pencils in hand. It seemed I was allowed a longer leash each day. No doubt, Reinn would be keeping tabs using the villagers nearby. But what he didn’t understand was I had no intention of going back.At least, not now.Giselle wanted m
