Rowan's POV

Sleep should have come the moment I closed my eyes but It didn't.

The room was quiet except for the steady crackle of the fire and the wind brushing against the windows. Somewhere outside, a patrol changed shifts, their footsteps fading almost as quickly as they appeared. It was the kind of silence I'd been used to for years, the kind that usually helped me think.

Tonight it only made me more aware of the person lying a few feet away.

I kept my eyes on the ceiling and it was a mist

Rowan's POV I told myself that on the ride out, and I told myself that again when I reached the tree line and left my horse tethered where the grass grew thick enough to hide it from the road. Neither time did it sound convincing, which was becoming a problem of its own. I didn't like lying to myself. I liked it even less when I couldn't seem to stop. The mark shouldn't exist yet. That was the actual reason, the one I could say out loud without flinching. Lyra had been clear about the seals the first time she examined Mira, weeks before any of this started. Ancient and layered. Not the kind of thing that surfaced gradually over a matter of weeks. Whatever held those seals in place had been built to last generations, not to start cracking the moment a girl from a diner walked through my front gate. And yet here we were. A mark spreading further every day. A message carved into my bedroom wall by someone who moved through my territory without leaving a scent I recognized. An archive t

Mira's POVI woke up alone, and the empty room felt strangely disappointing. For a second I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, trying to figure out why that bothered me so much. Rowan hadn't promised to stay. He hadn't even really explained why he'd shown up outside my door in the first place, chest bare under that half-buttoned shirt, looking like a man who'd talked himself into a bad decision and then walked all the way here to make it anyway.I told myself I didn't care that he was gone.I was lying, and I knew it, which somehow made it worse. The howling from last night still echoed faintly in my memory, along with the way the mark on my wrist had pulsed once, bright enough to light up the room for half a second before fading again. I lifted my arm and studied it in the pale morning light. Still there. Still silver. Still making absolutely no sense."Great," I muttered to the empty room. "Just a normal Tuesday.”I had no idea if it was actually Tuesday. Time had stopped meani

Rowan's POV I woke because the room was warm. That alone was enough to put me in a bad mood.I never slept through the night. Years of leading Blackwood had taken care of that. Even on the rare occasions my body gave in, my mind never really did. Every unfamiliar sound, every shift in the wind, every footstep outside my door dragged me awake before dawn. This morning, sunlight had already found its way through the curtains. For a few seconds I simply stared at the ceiling, irritated with myself. Something felt different, though I couldn't immediately place it. Then I turned my head.Mira was still asleep. She hadn't moved very far from where she'd been when we lay down. Sometime during the night she'd rolled onto her side, one hand tucked beneath her face while the blanket had slipped halfway to her waist. A strand of dark hair rested across her cheek, rising and falling with every slow breath she took.I looked away almost immediately.I had no business watching her sleep. The entir

Worse, he'd look at me with that knowing expression that suggested he'd figured something out before I had. I hated that expression.I shifted onto my side, careful not to make the mattress move, she hadn't noticed or maybe she had and was pretending not to.Either way, I wasn't about to ask,a few minutes

Mira Pov Their footsteps faded and the room fell into the kind of silence that made every little sound seem louder than it really was. I stood where he'd left me for another minute, my hand still resting on the doorknob. Part of me wanted to ignore him and follow anyway. That seemed to be becoming a habit. Instead, I shut the door. "One night," I muttered to myself. "I'm capable of behaving for one night." I wasn't entirely convinced. The silver mark had faded until it was barely visible again, but every now and then I could still feel a strange warmth beneath my skin, almost like someone had wrapped a blanket around my wrist.I climbed back onto the bed, pulled my knees against my chest and stared out the window. The moon hung low above the forest, beautiful and quiet. Completely unaware that my life had turned into something I would've laughed at if somebody had tried telling me about it a month ago that I will be kidnapped, sold and then living with werewolves. Apparently collecti

Mira POVRowan shook his head as if he regretted laughing the second it happened. "Don't get used to that." "Oh, I absolutely will." "You'll be disappointed." "I don't think so." "You've known me for barely a week." "And yet I've already figured out you're not nearly as intimidating as you pretend to be." "I don't pretend." "You do." "I don't." "You've got this whole..." I waved a hand at him. "...silent, scary Alpha routine going on." "It's not a routine." "It is." "Mira." "I'm serious." "So am I." "No, you're proving my point."He let out a slow breath, the kind people did when they were deciding whether continuing a conversation was worth the effort. "I've led this pack for years." "I know." "I don't get to react to every situation the way everyone else does." "I know that too." "If I lose control, everyone around me starts wondering whether they should panic." I looked at him for a moment. The teasing faded without either of us noticing. "I never thought about it like that."
