The silence in the boardroom was so thick it felt like physical weight, pressing the oxygen right out of Kael’s lungs. Darius’s words hung in the air, a poisonous vapor that seemed to bypass Kael’s suppressants entirely. He could feel the fine hairs on his arms standing up, his skin prickling with a cold, frantic sweat. Beneath his professional charcoal blazer, his heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Lucien’s hand, still resting on Kael’s shoulder, tightened. It wasn’t a comforting gesture; it was a claim. The Alpha’s fingers dug into the muscle just beside Kael’s neck, and the heat radiating from Lucien’s palm was searing, grounding Kael even as his world started to tilt.

"Krown," Lucien’s voice was a low, guttural rumble that vibrated through Kael’s own frame. "You’ve been staring at the ticker for too long. If you’ve lost the ability to distinguish between market trends and personal delusions, perhaps it’s time you stepped down from the board."

Darius didn't flinch. He stayed bent over the table, his eyes locked onto Kael’s midsection with a terrifying, predatory intensity. He inhaled again, a sharp, audible sound that made Kael’s stomach turn a violent somersault. "It’s not a delusion, Lucien. It’s a scent. Rare. Overpowering. Like a blooming orchard in a room full of stagnant water." He looked up, his gaze snapping to Kael’s pale face, his smirk widening into something jagged and cruel. "You’ve got something growing in there, don’t you, Ardent? Or maybe you’re just finally admitting what you really are."

Kael forced himself to breathe, his mind racing through a hundred different contingency plans. Logic. Maintain the mask. "I’m an analyst, Mr. Krown," Kael said, his voice trembling slightly despite his best efforts. "If you’re smelling something, perhaps it’s the stench of your failing bid. The numbers I’ve presented are indisputable. Your company is overleveraged, and this merger is the only thing keeping you from a total collapse."

Lucien’s scent flared—a sudden, sharp spike of cedar and ozone that acted like a physical barrier between Kael and Darius. It was suffocating, dominant, and so intensely Alpha that Kael’s lower abdomen gave a traitorous, hungry throb. He squeezed his eyes shut for a microsecond, fighting the urge to lean back into Lucien’s chest and let the Alpha handle the threat.

"Get out," Lucien commanded. The words weren't loud, but they carried the weight of an executioner’s axe.

Darius laughed, a dry, rasping sound, and straightened up. He adjusted his silk tie, his eyes dancing with a manic sort of glee. "Oh, I’m going. For now. But don't think a change in cologne is going to hide the truth forever, Kael."

As the board members shuffled out, the tension in the room didn't dissipate; it just shifted. Lucien’s phone suddenly buzzed against the mahogany tabletop, the vibration sounding like a chainsaw in the quiet. He looked down, his jaw tight, the muscle jumping in his cheek.

"I have to take this. It’s London," Lucien muttered, his eyes raking over Kael’s face one last time, searching for something Kael wasn't ready to give. "Wait for me in the hall. Don't go anywhere."

Kael nodded, his legs feeling like they were made of water as he stood. He needed air. He needed a bathroom. He needed to disappear. He walked out of the boardroom, the heavy oak doors clicking shut behind him, leaving him in the long, sterile corridor.

He didn't make it five steps before a hand shot out from a recessed doorway, grabbing his upper arm and jerking him into the shadows of the service alcove.

Kael let out a sharp gasp, his back hitting the wall with a dull thud. Darius was there, hovering inches from his face, his Alpha presence oily and intrusive. He didn't have Lucien’s raw, magnetic power, but he had a desperate, sharp edge that was just as dangerous.

"Let go of me," Kael hissed, his hand instinctively moving to cover his stomach.

"Don't play the professional with me," Darius sneered, his eyes dropping to where Kael’s hand rested. "I know that look. I know that smell. You’re not a Beta. You’re a little Omega bitch who’s managed to climb the ladder by hiding his heat. And now? Now you’re carrying his pup. Does Virel even know, or are you just his favorite little secret?"

Kael’s blood ran cold. The secret wasn't just a threat to his job anymore; it was a weapon. "You’re delusional, Darius. If you touch me again, I’ll have the security detail have you removed from the building."

"Security won't do shit when I leak the results from the St. Jude’s screening clinic," Darius whispered, his face so close Kael could see the burst capillaries in his eyes. Kael froze. St. Jude’s. That was where Elric had taken the samples. "I have a contact there. A nurse who owes me a very large favor. Imagine the headlines, Kael. 'Virel’s Top Analyst: The Omega Fraud.' You’d be ruined. They’d strip your licenses. You’d never work in this city again."

The walls felt like they were closing in. Kael’s heart was drumming a frantic rhythm against his teeth. He felt a surge of nausea, the familiar, metallic tang of morning sickness rising in the back of his throat. He reached into his pocket, his fingers fumbling for his smartphone. He felt the haptic vibration as he held the side button, triggering the voice recorder shortcut he’d set up weeks ago for meetings.

"What do you want?" Kael asked, his voice sounding hollow.

Darius smiled, a slow, greasy expression. "Simple. You’re going to find a 'discrepancy' in the Virel acquisition files. Something big enough to tank the valuation before the final vote tomorrow. You give me the leverage to buy him out, and I’ll make sure that medical file disappears. I might even find a place for you in my firm. I’ve always wanted an Omega who knows his way around a spreadsheet."

Darius reached out, his hand moving toward Kael’s throat, his fingers ghosting over the scent gland hidden beneath the high collar of his shirt. Kael felt a wave of pure, unadulterated revulsion. The thought of this man—of any man other than Lucien—touching him made his skin crawl with a literal, physical itch.

"I’d rather burn my career to the ground than help you," Kael spat, his voice shaking with a mix of fury and terror.

Darius’s expression darkened, his grip on Kael’s arm tightening until it bruised. "Think carefully, Ardent. You’re not just protecting yourself anymore. You’ve got a life inside you. You want that kid born into a scandal? You want it to be a pariah before it can even crawl?"

Kael looked him dead in the eye, his thumb pressing the save button on the recording through the fabric of his trousers. "I said, let go."

"And if I don't?" Darius challenged, his voice dropping to a threatening growl. He leaned in, his nose brushing against Kael’s ear. "If I decide to take a little taste of what Lucien’s been keeping all to himself?"

A sudden, violent pressure exploded in the air. It wasn't a sound, but a psychic weight, a wave of pure, territorial aggression that made the very floorboards seem to hum.

At the end of the long hallway, Lucien stood.

His coat was off, his shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with tension. His tie was loosened, but there was nothing relaxed about him. His eyes, normally a calculated, piercing blue, were blown wide, the pupils nearly swallowing the irises. He looked less like a CEO and more like a wolf that had just found a scavenger sniffing around his den.

"Darius," Lucien said, and the name sounded like a death knell.

Darius jumped back, his face instantly pale, his bravado vanishing as he sensed the sheer, overwhelming power radiating from the man down the hall.

Lucien didn't run; he stalked. Every step was slow, deliberate, and packed with a silent, lethal promise. He didn't look at Darius; his eyes were locked onto Kael, scanning him for any sign of harm, his nostrils flaring as he caught the scent of Kael’s distress mingled with the foul, lingering trace of another Alpha.

"I believe," Lucien said, stopping three feet away, the air between them practically sparking with static, "that you were just leaving."

He stepped into Kael’s space, his body a literal shield, his hand coming up to rest on the small of Kael’s back. The touch was electric, a jolt of Alpha heat that made Kael’s knees buckle. Lucien caught him, pulling him flush against his side, his thumb hooking into Kael’s belt loop in a gesture that was so possessive, so primally territorial, it left no room for doubt.

Lucien’s gaze finally flicked to Darius, and for the first time, Kael saw the true face of the man he was working for—and carrying a child for. It was cold, merciless, and utterly dominant.

"If I ever see you within ten feet of him again," Lucien whispered, "I won't just break your company. I’ll break you."

"The Director didn’t build a system, Lucien. He built a cage, and I’m the lock," Kael whispered, his eyes widening as the violet luminescence surged, tracing the veins in his neck like liquid lightning."Then we break the cage, we don't pick the lock," Lucien retorted, his voice vibrating with a desperate, unyielding authority. "Arthur, how much coolant is left in the primary line?"Arthur didn’t turn around, his focus glued to the shuddering bulkhead as the metal began to warp inward from the heat of the Cleaners' torches. "Enough to freeze a mountain, or boil us alive. Why? What are you planning?""Kael, listen to me," Lucien said, gripping Kael’s jaw firmly, forcing him to meet his gaze. "If you are the circuit, then you have resistance. Resistance creates heat. If we vent the coolant into the server core while you’re synced, the thermal shock will fracture the connection before the system can dump the load through you. It’ll be a clean break."Kael let out a ragged, wheezing laugh

The bulkhead shrieked as the plasma cutter carved a jagged, molten line through the steel. Glowing sparks showered the room, casting long, dancing shadows against the slick walls of the Central Spire."Three minutes, they said," Arthur growled, his voice tight with a jagged edge of desperation. He checked the magazine of his sidearm, the mechanical click-clack sounding deafening in the narrow chamber. "That was two minutes ago. These Cleaners don’t believe in patience."Lucien didn’t look back at the door. His eyes were locked on Kael, whose skin shimmered with that terrifying, rhythmic violet hue. "Kael, look at me. Don't look at the grid. Look at me. If you’re the fuse, we pull the fuse. We don’t burn it."Kael’s breathing was shallow, his chest hitching with every beat of the unnatural light beneath his skin. "You don't understand, Lucien. I’m not just the fuse anymore. I’m the circuit. To disconnect me is to flatline the entire local infrastructure—and me with it. The Directorate

"A proxy?" Kael’s laughter bubbled up, dry and brittle, like autumn leaves caught in a turbine. "Look at me, Lucien. Do you see a proxy? I am the terminal, the wire, and the fucking fuse. There is no middleman left to hire."Lucien gripped Kael’s shoulders, his fingers digging into the thin, sweat-soaked fabric of Kael’s shirt. "I didn’t spend three years stripping away every piece of corporate shrapnel in my life to watch you turn into a martyr for a dying grid. There’s always a variable. You taught me that yourself."Arthur slammed his fist into the wall, a shower of sparks cascading over his shoulder as the plasma cutters outside bit deeper into the primary bulkhead. "The variable is closing, you two! We have maybe three minutes before those Cleaners are inside and turned into a sieve of lead. Lucien, get off him. Kael, if you’re the fuse, how do we blow the base without turning you into a firework?"Kael tilted his head, his gaze unfocused as he stared into the ultraviolet spectru

"Kael, answer me! If Arthur vents the secondary valve, can you shunt the load? Can you dump this ghost-fire back into their own infrastructure?" Lucien’s voice was ragged, stripped of the corporate polish that had once defined his every syllable.Kael’s chest hitched. The violet light beneath his skin pulsed rhythmically, a sickly, bioluminescent heartbeat. "If I shunt it... it doesn't just go away, Lucien. It forces the system to consume itself. It’s a closed-circuit suicide pact. The Directorate loses everything, but I… I’m the wire. I’m the path of least resistance."Arthur kicked a piece of debris aside, his boots crunching on shattered glass. "So, let’s be clear. We blow the valves, the system collapses, and you potentially evaporate. Is that the trade?""That’s the trade," Kael whispered, his vision blurring."It’s not a trade if you aren't around to spend the currency," Lucien snapped, stepping between Kael and the console. "There has to be another way. A buffer. A proxy.""The

"You want a protocol, Arthur? Here’s your protocol: kill the power, not the building," Kael wheezed, his fingers trembling as he traced a sequence of light across the glass display. "If you drop the Spire, the magnetic discharge will liquefy my brain before the rubble hits me. You have to bypass the core’s coolant release manually."Arthur scoffed, glancing toward the reinforced door where the rhythmic thuds were now accompanied by the hiss of plasma cutters eating through the steel. "Manual override? Kael, look at that console. It’s glowing like a dying star. If I touch those relays, I’ll be fried before I can even blink.""Then don't touch them with your skin," Lucien commanded, his voice cutting through the panic like a blade. He shoved his heavy tactical coat toward Arthur. "Wrap your hands in the lining. Use the insulated plating from the wall panels. Kael, if he gets the secondary valve open, can you shunt the load back into the grid's local loop?"Kael’s eyes flickered, the vio

"You’re saying if I blow the base, I fry his brain?" Arthur’s voice dropped into a low, dangerous register, his hand hovering over the detonator.Lucien slammed his palm against the console, his eyes locked on Kael’s glowing, trembling skin. "I’m saying if you pull that trigger, you kill the only person who can navigate the exit. Kael, talk to me. Can you dampen the link? Can you pull the Signature back in?"Kael’s head lolled back against the freezing metal of the terminal. His eyes were wide, the irises eclipsed by a swirling, digital violet. "I’m not holding the door open, Lucien. The door is already off its hinges. It’s a flood. If I try to pull back, I’ll just drown faster.""Don't give me riddles," Arthur snarled, stepping closer. The thud of boots in the hallway grew louder—the rhythm of precision, of death. "Give me a protocol. How do we disconnect you without turning you into a charred husk?"Kael looked up, a ghost of a smile touching his cracked lips. "You want a protocol f
