"Keep running, Mara, don't look back!" Rhett yelled over the loud sirens as we sprinted across the dark campus quad.

The cold night air burned my lungs, but I didn't slow down. My fingers were locked tight around Rhett’s hand, his grip warm and strong even as my own hands trembled from the freezing rain and pure fear. Behind us, thick black smoke billowed out of the arena roof, turning the yellow security lights into hazy orange circles in the dark.

"Is anyone following us?" Ivy panted, struggl

  • The Alpha’s Heir Forbidden Mate   A Mother's Lullaby

"Please do not be afraid," said a quiet voice. "I will not hurt you."Rhett jumped in front of me, his eyes blazing gold. "Stay back!"A woman stood on the bottom step. She wore a long, gray cloak with the hood pushed back. She was thin and tired, with long dark hair streaked with silver. Her face was pale, and she held herself like she was carrying a heavy weight. She looked like she had not slept in years. There were thin scratches on her hands, and her boots were covered in mud.But her eyes were the most important thing. They were green, a deep forest green, exactly like mine."Mara," she said.It was only one word. But it was the voice from the lullaby. My mind was racing. I had imagined this moment a thousand times, in a thousand ways. I thought I would shout. I thought I would be angry. But all I wanted was to be close to her.I could not speak. I could not breathe. I stepped out from behind Rhett, slowly, like I was walking in a dream. The woman's eyes filled with tears."You

  • The Alpha’s Heir Forbidden Mate   The White Wolf in the Pines

"Do not growl, Rhett," I said, as soon as I changed back. "She is not attacking us.""I am not growling," Rhett muttered. He pulled on his jacket, which he had hidden behind a tree. He handed me my own clothes without looking, being a gentleman. "I am just being careful."The white wolf had not moved. She stood at the edge of the pines, very still, her pale eyes fixed on my face. When I took a step toward her, she turned and trotted into the trees. Then she stopped and looked back."She wants us to follow," I said."That is how every scary movie starts.""Rhett."He sighed. "Fine. But I go first."We followed the white wolf through the dark woods for nearly an hour. She never ran away. Every time we fell behind, she waited. The trees grew taller and thicker. The moon disappeared behind the clouds. At last we came to a clearing I knew very well.I thought about how strange it was that I could see so well in the dark now. Every leaf had a sharp outline. Every branch had its own shadow.

  • The Alpha’s Heir Forbidden Mate   The Night I Became a Wolf

"Mara! Mara, don't fight it!"Rhett's voice came from somewhere far away. I could not answer him. My whole body was burning, like fire running through every vein. I curled up on the cold grass."Breathe," he said. He had found me. He knelt down in front of me, his hands gentle on my shoulders. "It is your first shift. It is supposed to hurt a little. But I promise, it gets better.""A little?" I gasped. "It feels like my bones are breaking!""I know. I know. Look at me. Look at my eyes."I looked into his golden eyes. They were calm and steady. I held on to them like a rope."Your wolf has been waiting for years," Rhett said. "She is not your enemy. She is you. Just open the door, Mara. Let her out."I tried to listen to him. Another wave of heat rolled through me, and I cried out. Rhett did not let go. He pressed his forehead against mine."I am here," he said. "I am not going anywhere. You are the bravest person I know, and you can do this."His voice was the only thing that felt re

  • The Alpha’s Heir Forbidden Mate   The Handwriting I Knew

"Tell me the truth," I said. "Right now."I slammed the notebook on Agnes's kitchen table. It was the old brown one my father had left. Beside it, I set down the strange note from the boathouse. Next to it lay a birthday card, yellow with age.The two pieces of handwriting matched. Every single curve.Behind me, Ivy was quietly leading Tilda to the guest room with a plate of cookies. Ivy gave me one worried look over her shoulder and closed the door softly. I was grateful. I did not want anyone else to hear what came next.Agnes stared at them. She did not touch them. She put down her teapot very slowly, as if it weighed a hundred pounds."Where did you get that note?" she asked."From a girl who was told to poison my boyfriend," I said. My voice was shaking. "The woman who gave it to her signed it with one letter. E. Like Elise. Like my mother.""Mara." Rhett stood beside me, his hand on my back. "Take a breath.""I do not want to breathe!" I was crying now, and I hated it. "I want t

  • The Alpha’s Heir Forbidden Mate   The Girl Who Disappeared

"The girl who carried the cup is gone," Ivy said. "Like, totally gone. Her bed is empty."She burst into my dorm room at six in the morning, still in her pajamas and fuzzy socks. Her hair stuck out in every direction. She held a steaming mug in each hand.I sat up in bed. I had not slept at all. "What girl? Slow down.""The one in the gray apron! The kitchen helper who brought the cup to the Elder." Ivy handed me a mug. "Her name is Tilda Brook. She is a first-year. My friend Poppy lives on her floor. She said Tilda has not been back since last night.""Ivy, how do you always know everything?""I am the best gossip on campus. Use my powers wisely." She flopped onto the end of my bed. "The guards say she ran off because she was guilty. But Poppy says Tilda was really scared before the ceremony. She kept saying someone would hurt her mother."I sat up straighter. "Her mother? What does that mean?""I don't know. But I bet Tilda does."Rhett knocked on the door a few minutes later. He lo

  • The Alpha’s Heir Forbidden Mate   The Trial At Hollow Stone

"Remember, you only have to breathe," I whispered. "One breath at a time."Rhett laughed under his breath. "You are telling me that? You are shaking more than I am.""I am not shaking.""Your hand is a leaf in the wind."He was right. I stood at the edge of the Hollow Stone circle in the old pine forest, holding his hand like it was the last rope on a sinking ship. It was a cold, clear evening. A hundred wolves stood in a wide ring around us, in human form. Their breath made white clouds in the air.The Trial of Leadership was about to begin.I looked around the circle. I saw Ivy near the front, giving me two thumbs up. Coach Reyes stood next to her with her arms crossed, her face tight with worry. Agnes was there too, wrapped in her shawl, far at the back. She gave me a small, sad nod. I nodded back.In the center of the circle stood a huge gray rock, flat on top like a table. Elder Marrow waited there in a long green cloak. Next to her stood Councilman Pike and Doctor Halvern. Both
