Chapter 3: Midnight

The door swings inward.

Everett Stone stands on the threshold in a black tailored suit, broad-shouldered and still with controlled power. He is taller than Finn imagines and more muscular than the photographs make him look. His clean-shaven face is handsome in a rough, severe way, with defined cheekbones, a strong jaw, and thick brows drawn low over eyes that take in the room with terrifying speed.

Finn sees the exact moment Everett understands what is happening.

Everett’s gaze moves from Finn’s flushed face to the injection mark on his arm, then to the blood running down his palm around the broken glass. Dark, dangerous anger tightens his expression. The air between them grows heavier, and Everett’s scent reaches Finn through the doorway, clean and warm with something deeper beneath it, something powerful enough to cut through every ugly Alpha trace left in the room.

Finn’s body answers with a painful rush of recognition before his mind can stop it.

Humiliation nearly chokes him.

He raises the glass higher, even though his arm trembles. “Please do not come closer.”

Everett remains exactly where he is, and that single act of restraint strikes Finn harder than a step forward would.

Behind Everett, two men in suits shift uneasily. One of them says, “Mr. Stone, step away from him. The Omega is under contract.”

Everett keeps his attention on Finn, but the temperature of his expression changes. The fury in him becomes colder and more deliberate, as if the word contract takes whatever restraint he has and sharpens it into a weapon.

“What is your name?” he asks.

Finn swallows against the dryness in his throat. “Why do you want to know?”

“So I know what to call you when I get you out of here.”

The words reach him before he can defend against them.

Finn hates how deeply they affect him because they slip past his fear too easily and touch the desperate part of him that still wants to believe help can come without ownership attached. Powerful Alphas know how to make cages sound like shelter. They know how to offer safety with one hand while closing the lock with the other. Yet Everett does not reach for him. He does not touch the broken glass or order him to calm down. He stands in the doorway, holding himself back while every other Alpha scent beyond him pushes into the room like a threat.

“My name is Finn,” he says at last, barely above a whisper. “Finn Foster.”

Everett repeats the name quietly, as if he means to remember it correctly.

One of the men behind him makes the mistake of reaching toward the room.

Everett turns with a sharp, powerful movement that cuts across the doorway like a blade leaving its sheath. Finn barely follows the motion before Everett catches the man’s wrist and forces him back against the wall. The man’s breath leaves him in a choked sound, and the hallway seems to recoil from the sudden violence.

“No one touches him,” Everett says.

The silence that follows feels absolute.

Finn’s knees weaken with a relief he does not want to feel. He presses his back harder against the wall, furious with himself for reacting to Everett’s protection as if it means safety. Relief is dangerous. Hope is worse. Both make people lower weapons before they know whether the person reaching for them is a rescuer or another owner with better manners.

Everett looks back at him, and the anger in his eyes alters when he sees Finn struggling to stay upright. It does not soften enough to become pity. Pity would be easier to reject. This is something harder to name, something focused and almost personal, as though the sight of Finn bleeding and shaking reaches a place Everett prefers to keep buried.

“Finn,” he says, his voice steady, “I am going to come inside and close the door.”

Panic snaps through Finn’s chest. “Do not leave me trapped in here.”

“I am not leaving you.” Everett lifts both hands slightly, showing his empty palms with careful patience. “I will stay with you until my security reaches us. The men who bring you here are not leaving this building.”

The drug pulls at Finn’s body again, and Everett’s scent makes everything worse in the most dangerous way. It does not smell like the aggressive cologne outside the door. It feels darker, steadier, and painfully warm, like rain on stone and clean fabric still holding the heat of skin. Finn wants Everett’s jacket around him. He wants Everett’s body between him and the hallway. He wants too many things for a man who has just begged a stranger not to come closer.

The need frightens him enough to make his grip tighten around the glass until pain flashes up his wrist.

Everett’s gaze drops to Finn’s bleeding hand, and something shadowed and angry crosses his face. He looks not only at the cut but at the way Finn uses the pain to keep himself from breaking.

“You are hurting yourself,” Everett says quietly.

“I would rather hurt myself than let them hurt me.”

Everett absorbs the answer in silence, and the controlled line of his mouth hardens. For the first time, Finn sees the man beneath the empire. Everett does not look gentle or safe in any simple way, but he looks affected, deeply and dangerously.

Outside the room, a phone rings. Someone mutters the Lawson name again, this time with unmistakable fear.

Everett hears it, and Finn sees the name strike him with cold recognition.

Their eyes meet across the ruined doorway. The heat inside Finn rises into something more frightening than fever. His Omega instincts, starved and suppressed for years, reach toward Everett with terrifying certainty, as if something in his blood recognizes the Alpha before his mind has permission to understand.

Everett goes completely still.

Then he inhales once, slowly and with visible control.

The room changes around that breath.

Finn sees the exact second Everett understands. This is not only forced heat, an illegal sale, or an Omega trapped behind a gold door. Whatever lives in Finn’s blood answers whatever lives in Everett’s, and the truth stands between them with a heat neither of them can safely name.

Everett steps into the room and pushes the broken door shut behind him.

Outside, someone shouts that the Omega has already been promised by midnight.

Inside, Everett Stone looks at Finn as if the whole city has just become an enemy, and his voice lowers into a promise that sounds almost like a threat.

“Then midnight will have to come through me.”

Everett wakes before sunrise with his heart already fighting its way out of his chest. For one second, he does not understand why.The suite is dim and still. Gray light presses through the edges of the curtains, thin and cold, touching the floor without warming it. The air smells of melted ice, blood, fear, and the fading trace of heat. Dean’s men are quiet beyond the outer door. The Harborline Club no longer shakes with violence, but the silence feels wrong. Then Everett turns his head toward the bed.Empty.He is on his feet before thought fully forms.“Finn.”The name comes out low, rough, and too sharp for the quiet room. No answer comes from the bed. The sheets are twisted, still marked by the shape of a body that should be there, but the warmth is gone. Everett crosses the room in two strides and touches the mattress.Cold.Not completely, but close enough that instinct turns brutal inside him.His Alpha ri

  • The Alpha's Hidden Heir   Chapter 15: Before Dawn

Finn wakes before dawn with Everett’s scent still on his skin. For a moment, he does not know where he is. The room is dark except for the thin gray light pressing around the edges of the heavy curtains. The air smells of melted ice, clean towels, leather, blood from his wounded palm, and Everett. That last scent is everywhere, deep in the sheets, wrapped around his throat, caught beneath every breath. His body remembers before his mind does.Heat. Hands. Permission whispered so many times it became something Finn held on to instead of something forced from him. Everett’s mouth was careful against his. Everett stopped when Finn trembled, waiting for Finn could not speak, giving back control even when Finn barely knew how to use it.Finn closes his eyes. The shame comes first because shame is familiar. It crawls under his skin and tries to turn every memory ugly. He was drugged. Feverish. Terrified. He reached for an Alpha who should hav

Finn’s hand stays in Everett’s.At first, that is all he can manage. One hand gripping Everett’s, the other twisted in the blanket, his body trembling so hard the mattress seems to move beneath him. The heat has become something deeper than fever now. It no longer only burns under his skin. It pulls, searches, aches, as if something inside him has found Everett and refuses to forget the way back.Everett sits beside the bed, close enough for Finn to breathe him in, far enough that Finn can still feel the space between them. That space begins to hurt.Finn hates it. He hates the ache, the need, the shame of wanting the Alpha closer when his mind still remembers the gold door and the men outside it. He hates that Everett’s restraint, which should make him feel safer, also makes him feel exposed. Every careful pause reminds Finn of how ruined his control is.Everett’s thumb rests against Finn’s knuckles, still and w

  • The Alpha's Hidden Heir   Chapter 13: If It Has to Be Anyone

Everett does not move after Finn grabs his wrist. For one suspended second, Finn feels everything through that single point of contact. Everett’s pulse is steady beneath his fingers, slower than Finn’s frantic heartbeat, but not calm. There is tension under his skin, power held too tightly, instincts forced into stillness by discipline alone. The heat in Finn’s body recognizes that strength and reaches for it with a hunger that makes shame burn up his throat. He should let go.He does not.Everett lowers his gaze to Finn’s hand around his wrist, then lifts it back to Finn’s face. His eyes are dark, focused, and strained in a way that tells Finn this costs him more than he wants to show.“I am here,” Everett says quietly.Finn’s grip tightens. “Do not say it like that.”“Like what?”“Like it is easy.”Something flickers across Everett&rsqu

  • The Alpha's Hidden Heir   Chapter 12: The Heat Turns

The ice melts too quickly against Finn’s throat. At first, the cold gives him something to focus on. It numbs the fevered skin beneath his jaw, slows the frantic beat of his pulse, and makes the room sharpen for a few precious breaths. He counts the water sliding down his neck. He counts Everett’s steps as he moves once from the chair to the door and back again. He counts Dean’s low voice outside the suite, speaking into a phone, keeping strangers away. Then the heat turns. It does not rise like before. It twists.Finn gasps and curls forward, the towel falling from his hand onto the blanket. Pain flashes low through his body, sharp enough to make him clutch the sheets, then dissolves into a wave of need so humiliating that his eyes burn. His skin feels too tight. His lungs feel too small. Everett’s scent fills the suite until the walls seem soaked in it, dark and steady and unbearable.Everett is across the room in an insta

  • The Alpha's Hidden Heir   Chapter 11: No Club Doctor

Dean returns with two men behind him, and Finn’s body reacts before his mind understands why. They smell wrong. Not like Everett, not even like the violent Alphas in the hallway. These men carry the sharp scent of antiseptic, club perfume, and something bitter beneath it, something Finn’s instincts reject so violently that his hand curls in the blanket. The fever inside him twists toward panic. His skin goes cold and hot at once, and the room narrows around the open doorway.Everett rises from the chair before Finn can speak. He does not move like a man standing. He moves like a threat unfolding. The two men stop at the threshold.Dean’s jaw tightens. “They say they are medical staff.”“They are not coming in,” Everett says. One of the men lifts a small silver case. “Mr. Stone, the Omega needs immediate stabilization. The club has emergency protocols for heat reactions.”
