FAZER LOGINChapter 5
Strangers Among the Pines The four days leading up to the Full Moon Festival passed in a blur. Jade barely had time to think. From sunrise to sunset, she worked. The packhouse kitchen needed supplies transported from storage buildings. Lanterns needed hanging. Festival tables needed cleaning. Decorations needed putting up throughout the territory. And somehow, every unpleasant task seemed to find its way to her. Not that she was surprised. By now, she expected it. What she didn't expect was how difficult it became to avoid the whispers after Alpha Devin intervened at the training field. The encounter should have been forgotten. Instead, it became gossip. "...heard Alpha Devin stepped in." "...probably felt sorry for her." "...must be embarrassing." Jade ignored every word. Or at least she tried to. Unfortunately, Sabrina Carter seemed determined to make sure everyone remembered. Three separate times over the next few days, Sabrina found new ways to remind Jade that she didn't belong. The worst happened while decorating the main festival grounds. Jade was hanging lanterns when Sabrina strolled over with several friends. "You should hurry," Sabrina said pleasantly. Jade didn't look down from the ladder. "Why?" "With forty Blackthorn wolves arriving, we'll need everything perfect." Jade continued working. Sabrina sighed dramatically. "Then again, maybe nobody will notice if you're missing." The girls laughed. Jade climbed down the ladder slowly. Meeting Sabrina's gaze. "You seem very concerned about me lately." The laughter stopped. Sabrina's smile tightened. "Trust me. I'm not." "Good." Jade picked up her toolbox. "That would've been weird." For a brief second, Todd's sister looked genuinely speechless. A small victory. But Jade would take it. She always would. --- By the time the morning of Blackthorn Pack's arrival arrived, Jade was exhausted. Which was exactly why she was running through the forest before dawn. Most wolves might have considered sleep the logical choice. Jade preferred training. The forest behind the cottage was quiet. Peaceful. The air carried hints of pine and damp earth from an overnight rain. Her boots crunched softly against fallen needles as she ran. One mile. Then two. Then three. By the time she reached her training clearing, sweat dampened her shirt. Perfect. She dropped into a fighting stance. Punch. Kick. Spin. Recover. Again. The movements were instinctive now. Years of training had made them second nature. The wooden post absorbed blow after blow. Her knuckles stung. She welcomed it. Every strike brought her one step closer to becoming stronger. Closer to becoming someone people couldn't dismiss. The sound of a branch snapping behind her froze her in place. Someone was there. A stranger. Her wolf immediately became alert. Jade turned. An older man stood at the edge of the clearing. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Silver threaded through his dark hair. Everything about him radiated power. Not the loud, aggressive kind some Alphas carried. Something quieter. More controlled. His scent was unfamiliar. Definitely not Silverwood. The stranger watched her with thoughtful eyes. "You have good instincts." Jade straightened immediately. "You're on pack land." The man's eyebrow rose. "That obvious?" "Very." A smile touched his face. "Good." Instead of feeling reassured, Jade became more suspicious. Most strangers did not wander into secluded forest clearings before dawn. "Who are you?" The man folded his arms. "Alpha Gideon Blackthorn." Jade nearly forgot to breathe. Well. That explained the authority. Alpha Gideon was supposed to arrive with the Blackthorn delegation later today. Not alone. Not before sunrise. And definitely not in her training clearing. The older Alpha seemed amused by her surprise. "I assume you're from Silverwood." "Jade Sullivan." For a moment something flickered in his expression. Recognition. Gone so quickly she wasn't sure she'd seen it. "Sullivan." His voice lowered slightly. "Interesting." Jade frowned. "You know my family?" "Years ago." That wasn't exactly an answer. Before she could press further, Gideon glanced at the battered wooden training post. "You've been practicing for some time." Jade crossed her arms. "I'm trying to improve." "Most wolves your age train in groups." "I prefer this." The Alpha studied her quietly. The silence stretched long enough to become uncomfortable. Finally he nodded. "I can see that." For reasons she couldn't explain, his approval felt significant. And irritating. She didn't need approval from strangers. Even Alpha strangers. "You should be careful," Gideon said suddenly. Jade blinked. "About what?" His gaze drifted toward the forest. "The days before adulthood can be unpredictable for young wolves." A chill ran through her. The comment felt oddly personal. Before she could ask what he meant, another scent reached the clearing. Pack wolves. Several of them. Approaching quickly. Gideon noticed it too. "I should return before your Alpha realizes one of his guests disappeared." Jade almost laughed. Something told her Alpha Rowan would not be pleased. Gideon started toward the trees. Then stopped. When he looked back, his expression had changed. Become more serious. "Continue training, Jade Sullivan." She frowned. "Why?" The Alpha's gaze held hers. "Because I think you're stronger than most people realize." Then he disappeared into the forest. Leaving Jade alone in the clearing. Staring after him. Minutes later, Liam emerged between the trees carrying two travel mugs. "Found you." He stopped. His eyes narrowed. "You look like you've seen a ghost." Jade accepted the mug automatically. "Not a ghost." "Then what?" She looked toward the place where Alpha Gideon had vanished. A strange feeling settled in her chest. Not fear. Not quite curiosity. Something else. "I think," she said slowly, "I just accidentally met the Alpha of Blackthorn Pack." Liam nearly dropped both mugs. "You what?" For the first time that morning, Jade smiled. The Full Moon Festival hadn't even started yet. And things were already becoming interesting.Chapter 13TracesJade had never seen so many armed wolves in one place. The patrol moved through the forest in near silence, lantern light flickering across tree trunks and fallen leaves. Silverwood and Blackthorn warriors spread through the woods in a disciplined formation, searching for anything that might explain the mystery at their border. At the front walked Alpha Rowan, Alpha Gideon, Beta Garrett, and Beta Knox.Devin and Todd stayed close behind them.Jade found herself beside Ryker. Not because anyone assigned it.It simply happened.Neither seemed interested in changing it.The deeper they traveled into the forest, the more uncomfortable Jade became.Something felt wrong. The woods she knew so well seemed unfamiliar tonight.Like they were hiding something."You alright?"Ryker's voice was low enough that only she could hear."I think so."He studied her for a moment."You don't sound convinced."
Chapter 12The Scent in the ForestThe moment Jade's expression changed, Devin knew she remembered something. The room went silent.Every eye fixed on her.Jade looked startled by the attention. As though she wasn't used to having a room full of ranked wolves waiting for her answer.Which, Devin realized, she probably wasn't.Rowan took a step forward."What is it?"Jade swallowed."Three mornings ago, during training."Garrett immediately straightened."You saw someone?""No."She shook her head."I caught a scent."The room grew even quieter."A wolf scent?" Knox asked.Jade nodded."At the time I thought it was a traveler passing near the territory line."Devin frowned.Travelers rarely wandered that close. Not without being noticed."Why didn't you report it?" Marcus asked. The question carried more judgment than curiosity.Jade's shoulders stiffened instantly. The reactio
Chapter 11InterruptedThe lanterns grew fewer as Jade followed Ryker away from the festival grounds. For the first time in three days, the noise of the celebration faded behind them.Music became distant.Laughter softened. The forest reclaimed its silence.A small clearing overlooked a stream a short walk from the main grounds. Someone had hung several lanterns from low tree branches years ago, leaving the spot warm and inviting despite the darkness.Ryker pulled out a chair that had clearly been stolen from somewhere.Jade stared."Did you steal furniture?""It sounds much worse when you say it like that.""How else should I say it?"He considered."Heroically borrowed."Jade laughed."You're impossible.""I've heard that.""You should listen more closely."His grin widened. The dinner itself was simple.Bread.Roasted venison.Fresh fruit.Nothing extravagant.Yet it felt nicer than anything Jade could remember.Maybe because neither of them was trying to impress the other. For on
Chapter 10Under the LanternsThe final evening of the festival should have been relaxing.Instead, Devin felt trapped. Not physically.Politically.The large dining hall beside the Alpha House had been reserved for ranked wolves, visiting dignitaries, elders, and honored guests. Long wooden tables filled the room, covered with roasted meats, fresh bread, seasonal vegetables, and enough desserts to feed half the pack twice over.At the head table sat the leaders of both packs.Alpha Rowan Hunter occupied the center seat beside Luna Eleanor Hunter. To Rowan's right sat Beta Garrett Hayes, Silverwood's trusted second-in-command.Gamma Marcus Carter sat nearby, looking entirely too pleased about Silverwood maintaining a narrow lead over Blackthorn in the festival rankings.Across from them sat Alpha Gideon Blackthorn and Luna Vivienne Blackthorn.Vivienne possessed the kind of effortless warmth that put wolves at ease within minutes. More
Chapter 9A Different Kind of VictoryJade woke to laughter drifting through the open cottage window. For a brief moment, she forgot where she was. Then the sounds of the festival reached her.Music.Voices.Celebration.The final day of the Full Moon Festival had arrived. And for the first time in years, Jade found herself looking forward to it."You're smiling."Jade looked up from her breakfast. Her mother was watching her from across the kitchen table."I am not.""You are.""I'm eating.""You smiled into your tea."Jade groaned. Her mother laughed. The sound filled the small cottage."You've had a good festival."It wasn't a question.Jade couldn't deny it.Despite Sabrina's occasional comments.Despite the whispers.Despite everything. The festival had been good.Better than expected.Mostly because she'd spent so much of it with Liam. And Ryker. The realization made her pause.Three days ago, Ryker had been a stranger. Now she caught herself looking for him in crowds.Wondering
Chapter 8 Competition Devin had always loved competition. Not because he enjoyed winning. Though he did. Not because he liked proving himself. Though that was certainly part of it. He loved competition because it stripped away excuses. Rank didn't matter. Politics didn't matter. Reputation didn't matter. The field, the target, the finish line, the opponent. Those things told the truth. And today, the truth would belong to whoever earned it. The second day of the Full Moon Festival dawned bright and cool. By sunrise, wolves were already gathering near the competition grounds. Rows of benches surrounded the central field. Banners from both Silverwood and Blackthorn fluttered overhead. Children darted through the crowd while vendors set up food stalls and elders settled in to watch the events. The excitement was contagious. Even Devin felt it. Beside him, Todd stretched his shoulders. "Tell me again why we agreed to participate in every event."
