Chapter 3

Author: Felisa
I looked at the 67% loyalty score above that coworker's head and said nothing.

Near the end of the party, I headed to the restroom. Just as I was about to push the door open, I heard someone on the phone inside. It was Lisa's voice.

"Relax, his mate is just a stay-at-home mom. She doesn't know anything except taking care of the pup. You really think a woman like that still has any appeal?"

My hand froze on the door handle.

"Besides, I haven't done anything out of line. Alexander and I are just doing overtime and grabbing meals together. The Alpha chooses to stay on his own. It's not like I'm forcing him."

She laughed and kept complaining. "The Alpha complains to me all the time, says Irene's petty and throws tantrums. An Omega who can't even make her mate feel secure? She deserves to be replaced, am I right?"

Three nights after the company party, Alexander finally came home. The number above his head had dropped to 67%, another five points gone.

I sat in the living room, a cup of coffee gone cold beside me.

"Why are you still up?" He steadied himself against the doorframe, frowning at me.

"Joyce has a fever."

He looked a little caught off guard. "Is it serious? Why didn't you call me?"

"I tried the mind link first. You'd blocked it off."

He blinked, then his expression flickered with something like guilt. "I was in the middle of handling pack business. I had to shut it down."

I'd reached for the bond we shared, the one thing that was supposed to connect us no matter what, and he'd sealed it off. I'd had to fall back on an ordinary phone call.

"A hundred and three. I already took her to the hospital."

Alexander opened his mouth, but went to Joyce's door first, pushed it open, and took a look inside. Joyce's fever had broken. She was curled up asleep under the blanket, her little cheeks still a bit flushed.

"Next time Joyce has a fever, make sure you call me." He turned back, a hint of guilt in his tone, but more of it was blame.

"I called three times. You didn't pick up."

He pulled out his phone and scrolled through his call log, his expression stiffening.

"I was at a business dinner. My phone was on silent."

"A dinner where?"

"With a client. You know we've got a big project coming up. I'm busy."

"A client you also arranged to meet with Lisa?"

Alexander's eyes snapped up to mine. He was silent for several seconds before he asked, "How do you know Lisa was there? Are you investigating me?"

"Your car has GPS. It's still linked to my account."

Alexander's face changed. "Irene, now you're tracking me?"

"Your daughter's burning up with a fever, and you're drinking at another woman's house. You tell me who's the problem here."

He slammed his bag onto the couch. "Lisa and I are not what you think! The client meeting was Lisa's connection. I was at her place that day because she knows the client's tastes better. All of us coworkers were at Lisa's trying wine together. You know how much I've got riding on this project. Can you stop being paranoid day and night?"

"Then why did you say you were at the office?"

He went quiet. "I'm not explaining myself, because even if I did, you wouldn't believe me."

Alexander walked into the bedroom and shut the door.

67%.

In the living room, Joyce had woken up at some point. She stood at the end of the hallway, hugging her bunny.

I crouched down and pulled her into my arms. She smelled like milk-scented body wash, her little body warm and soft. This was the only reason I'd fought so hard to hold this family together.

That night, I got a text from an unknown number. "Irene, there was no wine tasting that day."

I stared at the message, then called the number back. The person picked up. It was Leo's voice. "Irene, it's me."

"Lisa isn't just any Beta. There's another Alpha behind her, or several, more powerful ones. If Alexander wants next year's project to go well, he has to tie himself to her. But whether he needs to be tied to her this closely, I can't say."

"So what you're telling me is Alexander's only getting close to Lisa for business?"

"What I'm telling you is, whatever Alexander's reasons are, Irene, you should have a plan of your own."

He was right. It was time for a new plan. One that didn't include Alex.

The number above his head was only a surface thing. What really broke me wasn't some simple number.

I stayed with Alex because I loved him. If he didn't love me anymore, there was no reason for me to stay.

I had to leave.

That night, my phone kept ringing, and I didn't pick up.Alexander had always believed that without him, Joyce and I would have nothing. What he didn't know was that I'd opened a private investigation firm a long time ago, one that specialized in services for married clients, and I already had a steady stream of customers. More than enough to support myself and Joyce. Hell, a lot of Alexander's own clients' wives were loyal fans of mine. Alexander just didn't know it.I didn't enjoy telling people the truth about their marriages. If I could, who wouldn't want to choose someone at a hundred percent? Most people's marriages just bounce around the passing line. But my bottom line was different. Once I made this decision, I wasn't going to regret it.After staying at Mia's for a while, Joyce and I decided to move to the next pack over, Blackmoor Pack, and leave this place for good. After a short adjustment period, Joyce accepted the situation fast. She was even looking forward to Blackmoor

That afternoon, I went to pick Joyce up from school. As I was coming out, I ran into Lisa at the gate. She smiled when she saw me."Irene, what a coincidence."Instinctively, I stepped in front of Joyce, a bad feeling settling in my gut."What are you doing here?""Picking up my sister's son. He goes to this school too." Lisa said it like it was nothing."Don't be nervous, Irene. I was just passing by. Since we ran into each other, there's something I've been meaning to tell you.""I may have left the company, but I'm still the point person on Alexander's project. So when the Alpha flew to Blackwood Pack to sign the deal last week, I was there too."Alexander had been doing so well lately, so when he said he had a two-day business trip last week, I hadn't asked a single question. I'd assumed he went alone. Turns out Lisa was there too."The hotel booked two rooms." Lisa's tone was as calm as if she were giving me the weather. "But that night, Alexander came to my room to grab some file

"One month, Irene. Just one month. I'll prove to you how much I actually care about this family. If you're still not satisfied after that, I won't stand in your way anymore. We have a pre-bond agreement. You already asked Mike about it. You know what it says."I closed my eyes. I knew Alexander had already changed.I just couldn't let go. Couldn't let go of the Alexander who'd once been a hundred percent. Couldn't let go of the Alexander who'd said he'd spend the rest of his life with me. And more than anything, I couldn't bear to see Joyce hurt.Alexander had no idea I could see the number above his head, and it hadn't changed a bit, no matter how sincere he sounded."Irene, I've truly never thought about leaving you two. Why won't you believe me?"Just as Alexander was pleading with me to agree, Joyce suddenly pushed the door open. Her little head peeked out, and she came running over clutching that bunny with the missing ear. "Mommy, Daddy, are you still fighting?"Alexander glanced

The night Alexander said he'd handle it, Leo messaged me again. "Irene, Lisa dropped the complaint. But it wasn't because of Alexander. Someone sent an anonymous email to HR, with her background check from her last company attached. It's really bad for Lisa."The anonymous email wasn't from me. So who sent it?The next day I got my answer. It was Mike. He asked to meet at the café downstairs from the company, his expression a little complicated. "I sent the email."I looked at him and asked, "Why?""Because you're my friend." He took a sip of his coffee. "And because I can't stand Lisa's little games. Irene, I looked carefully into her last company. She was very close with the VP there. He got so wrapped up in her that his mate ended up in the hospital. When people at the company found out, Lisa got pushed out. She's a repeat offender. Not worth trusting.""Mike, aren't you afraid the company will come after you for this?""Background check reports are Legal's own files. Sending it to

The next morning, I went to Alexander's company. The front desk knew me and smiled in greeting. "Irene, here to see the Alpha? He's in a meeting on the twenty-third floor.""Not here for him. I have an appointment with Mike in Legal to look over a contract."I got on the elevator but didn't go to Legal. I went to Marketing instead.Lisa's office was at the very back of the department, the door half open. I didn't go in, just took a quick glance as I passed. Lisa wasn't there, but there was a photo frame on her desk. A group photo, Lisa standing dead center, beaming. Alexander stood right beside her, the two of them very, very close.I looked away and kept walking. At the corner, I ran into a girl filling up at the break room."Hi, is Lisa in?""Lisa's out at a meeting. You are?""I'm Alexander's mate."The girl's hand jerked, water spilling over the cup."Hi, Irene.""It's fine, just wanted to meet you all." I smiled. "Heard your department's been swamped with projects lately. Thanks f

  • The Alpha's Loyalty Score   Chapter 4

I'd already packed the bags for me and Joyce and told my mom we could move in anytime. The next afternoon, I took Joyce straight to my mom's. She knew I could see everyone's loyalty score. When she found out Alexander's was down to 67%, she didn't say a word, didn't even ask. That night, when Alexander got home and saw I wasn't there with Joyce, he figured I was throwing another tantrum. He didn't even bother reaching out.Life at my mom's was bliss. She took over all the housework and found a new way to cheer me up every day. She took Joyce out to play, made my favorite spicy cream pasta, kept herself busy from morning to night. It was so comfortable I almost forgot I was still mad.It wasn't until two days later that Alexander finally realized I hadn't just taken Joyce for a visit. Our clothes and daily things were gone too. Our stuff was gone too. That was when he started to panic. He tried the mind link first, but I'd shut him out. So he called instead. "Where are you?""Irene, whe
