Chapter 4

Penulis: Frosted Cabbage
Evelyn's POV:

After leaving the orphanage, I went home and headed straight upstairs. I pushed open the wooden door next to the bathroom and walked into my personal storeroom.

I went to the side, brought out an old wooden box, and started tidying up the things in it.

There were only a few pieces of clothing and jewelry in it. They had been courtesy gifts from Kiera five years ago.

Meanwhile, during the five years I'd been with Callum, he had only ever bought me racy lingerie and sex costumes meant to please his wolf.

After tidying up my clothes, I turned around to look at the other items I'd put in the corner.

These items were all gifts I thoughtfully bought for Callum every year using the money I managed to save from my daily expenses. However, I could see that there was already a thin layer of dust on them.

I put the items all into the wooden box, called up the recycling services, and sold everything off for a handful of cash.

Just as I was about to turn and go back into the house, a black car screeched to a halt mere inches away from me after zooming out from the woods, nearly knocking me over.

The door opened, and Callum's younger sister, Lily Wolffang, stepped out of the car in her luxurious leather coat and with a face full of makeup.

Lily saw the recycling truck in the yonder out of the corner of her eye and scoffed coldly. She then looked at me and said, "I guess that's expected from a poor little thing coming from nowhere, peddling off your stuff for pennies. I bet you stole a bunch of stuff from our family for years!"

I looked at Lily calmly before turning to leave.

Lily's smile immediately dropped. She ran up to me and grabbed me.

"Stand there!"

I shook her hand off and ignored her.

Ever since marrying into the Wolffang clan, I had been bending over backward to serve each of them and make them happy. So, this was the first time I had ever shown Lily my cold attitude.

Lily was furious when she saw how I was treating her.

"Are you deaf? I'm talking to you! Can't you hear me?"

Lily had never liked me from the start. She thought that someone from my background was too lowly to be her sister-in-law.

So, throughout the five years, she had been secretly sabotaging me—either by locking me up in the bathroom or breaking all my hunting tools.

Now that I was finally going to be free, I didn't have to bother about trying to please her any longer.

Suddenly, Lily laughed and told me, "You know that Cal's first love is back, right? I bet you've heard of her. Iris Howley. She's the only one who deserves to be with my brother. As for you…"

She gave me a once-over with disdain in her eyes. "You're just a maggot from a lowly clan in the borders. We can finally get rid of you!"

After Lily spoke, another person stepped out of the black car.

This was the first time I had ever seen Iris in person. This was the woman whom Callum couldn't and wouldn't stop thinking of.

Iris had a lovely head of long, golden locks. Her skin was as smooth and flawless as ivory, and she was dressed in a beautiful white dress. Her eyes were deep and mesmerizing, and she gave off an air of elegance.

Iris walked toward me slowly and said in a soft voice, "Lily, you shouldn't speak like this to Ms. Severa. After all, she's Callum's mate."

"Mate?" Lily laughed scornfully. "Haven't I been telling you in the car, Iris, that you're the only one Cal wants? He was the one who gave you all those gifts and presents in the past five years whenever he left the pack. Can't you see how much you mean to him?"

After Lily was done talking to Iris, she then turned to me and barked out her orders. "What are you still standing there for? Hurry up and bring Iris' suitcases into the house. Cal agreed to let her stay here."

I simply glanced at the suitcases, ignored them, and walked away.

Lily was so mad that she stomped her feet on the ground.

In the end, it was the driver who had to help them bring the suitcases in. Lily rushed in first to give me an earful, but that was when Callum suddenly walked into the living room.

He hurried toward Iris and gave her a quick once-over. After making sure that she was alright, he then turned to me and said, "Iris' home is still under renovation, so she will be temporarily staying with us."

I looked at Callum silently without saying anything.

Iris, on the other hand, lowered her head and bit her lips. She said in a soft, weak voice, "I don't think that's a good idea, Callum. After all, this is still a den that you share with your mate. If I stay here, Ms. Severa will undoubtedly get upset with me…"

"Don't bother about it," Callum said, interrupting her. "Evelyn has always been an understanding person. She'd never kick up a fuss over such a small thing."

I nearly burst out laughing when I heard what he said.

I didn't show my emotions on my face, however. I just told her in a calm voice, "Of course, I wouldn't. Ms. Howley, you're more than welcome to stay."

It just made sense. This home was going to belong to her eventually, anyway.

Evelyn's POV:I held a white lily in my hand as I walked into the funeral parlor. I caught sight of Lupinus' snow-white hair from the corner of my eyes. He looked as though he had aged by at least ten years as compared to my memories.Meanwhile, Callum sat in a wheelchair by the side, his eyes hollow and devoid of any shine. He looked like the shell of the werewolf he once was, but no longer remained. I simply couldn't associate his current figure with the proud and confident werewolf he used to be a long time ago.I went up to Kiera's casket and stopped before her photo. She was smiling kindly in her photo, with a hint of pride and accomplishment in her eyes, as if proud of herself for successfully playing the role of a generous and compassionate person.I lingered at her photo for a while as longtime memories began to hit me. Kiera had been the one who rescued me from the orphanage but later imprisoned me in a luxurious cage and destroyed five years of my youth. The conflicted

Callum's POV:I never thought that the silver dagger we once used as a bet would reappear in my hands once again. As soon as I held it in my hand, I was instantly drawn back to a memory from many, many years ago.It was a summer afternoon when we were all standing on the deck of the yacht looking out at sea. My friends and I were very excited and thought of looking for the silver dagger that had been lost at sea, according to the legends. We had agreed that whoever's female companion was willing to jump in to search for it would automatically win the bet and the prime land in Northville we all had our eyes on.It had actually been nothing more than just a stupid bet because we were fooling around. Nobody would have thought that it was real. Even I thought that nobody would be dumb enough to jump into the sea for it.However, Evelyn hadn't hesitated for long. After confirming that the bet was real, she had then jumped into the sea without further ado.I would remember that momen

Evelyn's POV:I didn't care about Callum's response at this point. I continued, "If it weren't for your mother's repayment contract, we would never even have met. I have my own life to live."Callum just stared at me in a daze. He looked bitter as he moved his lips to say something but stopped.Instead, he just quietly watched as I got out of his car and left.Just as I was about to walk into Raoul's house, suddenly, a pair of piercing headlights shone straight in my face. I immediately shielded my eyes from the blinding light. Then, I heard the loud screeching of wheels squealing against the asphalt, followed by Callum screaming my name."Evelyn!"Lily was the one behind the accident. She was completely overwhelmed and consumed by her resentment toward me, pinning all of the blame on me for what happened to her. She had broken free from the guards' restrictions at home and taken her car out to try and kill me.Unexpectedly, Callum dashed over to me and pushed me out of harm's

Evelyn's POV:Raoul helped me pack with a sad expression on his face."You've only been back for a month. Are you really going back now?"I stuffed the last of my folded shirts into my suitcase and said, "I have to leave."I had planned on staying for a longer period of time, but Callum already knew where the medical center was where I worked. Also, he wasn't the leader of the pack anymore, which meant he would have a lot of free time on his hands. And, I simply didn't have the time or energy to continue putting up with him.I also thought that it was high time Raoul found someone to be his mate. I couldn't always stay by his side because it wouldn't be appropriate otherwise.I zipped up my suitcase and brought it over to the door. Then, Raoul suddenly asked me, "Do you still remember Iris?"Iris? I froze. It had been a long time since I heard her name being brought up.In my memories, Iris had gone back to her ex-mate's territory and remarried. However, I didn't know what happ

Callum's POV:Father sat in the center of the study, shadows masking his face.I was standing before him, feeling tense all over, still hearing Lily's anguished cries from outside the study.Father lowered his head as he flipped through some documents. His silence made me feel even more suffocated."Callum, do you know how disappointed I am in you right now?"He finally spoke in a low yet bone-chilling voice. It felt like sharp claws slicing into my dignity."Father, I…" I wanted to speak up for myself, but I realized that I simply didn't know where or how to start.Father finally looked up, his gaze as sharp as a knife. "Look at everything you've done. You couldn't even handle two women by your side! You have destroyed the reputation of the Wolffang clan. Do you even know how the Alphas from the other clans are making fun of you?"I had to admit that I never managed to fulfill my duties as the Alpha of the pack ever since Father retired. I kept losing myself over Evelyn beca

Evelyn's POV:Hearing this, Callum's hand stopped mid-air. He turned around and looked at me and Raoul with a complicated look in his eyes.I looked at the mess before me and found it quite ironic. At that moment, the guests started pointing fingers and whispering among themselves. Lily's face turned even redder as she glared at me with pure hatred. She gritted her teeth and screamed at the top of her lungs, "It's all your fault, you filthy bitch!"She was so loud that I thought my ears would shatter."If it weren't for you, Cal would have never cut off my allowances and banished me to the borders to starve!"I chuckled coldly at her words."My fault?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. My voice turned icy as I continued, "Who was the one who kept looking down on me and made fun of me in the past? And who was the one who banished you to the borders?"You've got it all mixed up. How could you even blame me for that?"I then swirled the red wine in my glass and cast her anoth
