Chapter 3

Author: Sienna
"When?"

"The next eclipse," I said. "Scents are hardest to distinguish that night. No one will be able to pick out mine.

"I've checked the cliff. Twenty paces down, there's a stone ledge hidden from anyone standing above. Rig a net there. Beneath the net is an underground river that never freezes in winter. It will carry me downstream."

"But you'll still be alive." He stared at me. "If you go over that cliff alive, all he has to do is follow your scent downstream. He'll know you survived."

I pulled a crystal vial from the lowest shelf of the medicine rack and set it on the table. "I've prepared deathgrass potion. It will stop my heart for six hours."

I looked out the window. There were three days left until the next eclipse.

Around midnight, an uproar erupted outside the medicine hut.

I pushed the door open and found a crowd gathered outside.

At the front, a mother knelt in the snow, cradling a pup whose body had already gone stiff.

I knew that pup.

Two nights earlier, his fever wouldn't go down, so I had given him half a spoonful of a fever-reducing potion.

"You killed him." The mother lifted her head. "You gave him that medicine."

I crouched down and reached for the pup, but his mother shoved me away. "Don't touch him!"

"Bring the medicine here," I said. "I'll drink it in front of all of you."

Someone fetched the small clay bowl from the hut. I took it and drank from it.

A quarter of an hour passed. I remained standing in the snow, completely unharmed.

I was about to speak when I heard footsteps approaching from the direction of the altar.

Celine had arrived.

Supported by two maids, she approached the mother and crouched beside her. She brushed the snow from the pup, then looked up at me.

"Did you touch this pup?"

I froze.

I had touched him. I had pressed his belly to check for bloating, but only for a few seconds.

I nodded. "I did."

"Then it wasn't something he swallowed." She turned to the mother. "His skin is flushed and his face has turned blue. He must have touched something that triggered an allergy.

"Ella treats so many patients every day. She could easily have come into contact with something without realizing it."

A murmur swept through the crowd around us at her words. The color drained from my face.

She had not accused me of poisoning him. She had accused me of carrying an allergen on my hands.

The accusation had no evidence behind it, but it didn't need any.

I did not dodge when the mother threw herself at me.

Her nails scratched my face from my brow to my jaw, but no one stepped forward to stop her.

The trial took place before the altar, with torches arranged in a ring and the entire pack assembled.

Theron sat above me on the altar while I knelt before him.

The Elder raised his head. "Why did that pup die?"

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

A three-month-old pup had died overnight. I could think of seven or eight possible causes, but I could not name even one with certainty.

I had not been given enough time to examine the body, and I would not guess at a diagnosis.

Theron remained silent until the Elder finished reading the final charge. Then he stood and declared, "Her negligence caused a pup's death. Make her kneel on the silver sand until dawn."

The bed of crushed silver before the altar was where those who broke pack law were made to kneel.

When I knelt, the sharp silver grit dug into my knees, sending pain deep into my bones.

The snow fell harder. Theron remained on the altar until midnight, silent and unmoving.

By the time Gordon came to help me up, both my legs were numb.

He escorted me to my door, pressed a small cloth bundle into my hand, then turned and left.

It was not medicine, but moss soaked in snowmelt to dress my wounds.

I sat on the threshold and laughed aloud.

He had buried his concern so deep that in the three years I'd been there, I had never once seen a trace of it.

I looked up at the sky. Three days until the eclipse.

"That's her." The she-wolf in front lunged at me, the tips of her claws stained purple with wolfsbane.I knew it was Celine.Three years as a rogue had reduced her to skin and bone and left one hind leg lame, but she lunged at me anyway.Raynor moved to intervene, but I raised a hand to stop him.I stepped forward to meet her. Before her claws could reach me, I pressed my palm to the top of her head.Silver light ran down from my fingertips, and the redness slowly faded from her eyes.Celine went limp beneath my palm. Her legs buckled, and she collapsed into the snow. Her coat twitched as she slowly shifted back into human form. She lay on her back in the snow with tears running from the corners of her eyes.I stood up and left her there.“Settle your own score with her,” I told Theron. He never once looked at Celine. His eyes stayed on me the entire time. The snow began to fall again. He took two steps toward me and stopped a distance away."That night, I said you didn't look like her

By the next morning, the snow at Moonwatch Ridge was knee-deep.When I opened the door, he was already standing there. After three years apart, he was so gaunt I almost did not recognize him. His luxurious robes could not hide how exhausted he looked. His right hand hung at his side. Old scars lay beneath fresh cuts until the skin on the back of his hand was nearly ruined. He saw me first, then the child peeking out from behind me.His breath caught. "This...""My son with Raynor." I put Owen behind me.I watched him stand in the snow, not daring to take a single step forward. The most powerful Alpha alive stood at the door of a stone hut, as helpless as a man who had wandered into the wrong place."Ella." He swallowed hard. Then, in front of everyone, he dropped to one knee in the snow."I was wrong. I cast Celine out. No pack dares take her in. I burned the treaty. I sent your mother's coffin back to the ancestral grounds. I made them carve your name back in."I kept the Luna's posit

We traveled north for four months. We stopped at a place called Moonwatch Ridge. Beyond it, no one lived. That first winter in the north, nobody would trust their life to a she-wolf who had come from nowhere.I settled in a rundown shed at the edge of town and treated anyone who fell ill, asking nothing in return. The first person willing to let me treat him was an old man with a broken leg.He gritted his teeth and let me set the bone. Afterward, he asked for my name.It took me a long time to remember that I needed a new name.So I told him I was Mrs. Snow. That winter, I was still trying to purge the silver poison from my shoulder.Seven nights of sheer endurance had drawn most of it out of my bones. But forcing the last traces out of my body took the entire winter. The last of it came out from under my nails the following spring. It was a bright, clear day. That night, I shifted for the first time on the snowy plain.A bloodline that had been suppressed for 15 years awakened on its

The second piece of news took 20 days to reach the north. The whole town was saying that the Alpha of Shadowridge had led the forces of nine packs into Silvermoon territory. The first thing Silvermoon did after my death was remove my name from the bloodline register, and that didn't sit well with Theron. The register was carved into a wooden board. Removing a name meant carving it out with a knife, cut after cut, until only a raw white scar remained. The Silvermoon Alpha stood in front of the pack house and made a speech to the pack.He called me a disgrace and offered to send another she-wolf to renew the treaty. He also sent a messenger. These were his exact words."That trash hadn't been marked after three years by your side. She was never your Luna. You need not grieve for her."To please Theron, they had even dug up my mother's coffin and dumped it in the wasteland along the border.Their reason was that any bloodline that produced such a disgrace no longer deserved a place in the

News from Shadowridge followed us all the way north. We stopped in a town, and as I warmed my hands by the hearth, a trader beside me was telling everyone the latest news. The first story was about Celine.A trader set down his bowl and lowered his voice. "The trouble started on the night of the mating ceremony. The next day, the Alpha locked up his new bride for 20 full days.""Locked up where?""The stone room in front of the altar." The trader clicked his tongue. "He went there once a day, but in twenty days, he asked the same question."He asked her which side of his body had been wounded that night."She answered three times, and every answer was different."Someone by the fire laughed and said that was hardly a punishment.I lowered my head and blew warm breath into my palms. I knew exactly what it was: fear.Theron wanted Celine to live with the fear that death could come any time. He was tormenting her day after day."On the twenty-first day," the trader continued, "the Alpha t

I landed in the net.No one on the cliff could see me, including Theron.Celine's blade had pierced my shoulder, its edge coated in wolfsbane. As soon as the deathgrass wore off, the poison surged through me.Raynor tried to suppress the poison, but as a rogue, he did not have the power to do it.I lay in a cave downstream for seven days, delirious with fever and biting down on a piece of wood to endure the pain.On the seventh night, Raynor returned late, snow clinging to his clothes."How is it out there?"He was silent for a long time before answering. "He's searched the entire stretch of river, from the foot of the cliff to two miles downstream. Seven days without stopping.""And what did he find?""Your cloak," he said. "And Celine's knife."He paused and turned to me. "Only you were missing."Raynor watched me. "Last night, the Elder urged him to call off the search. Anyone swept into an underground river in winter would be long gone after seven days. He told Theron to hold a mem
