The iron door groaned open before dawn.

Cold air poured in from the corridor, brushing over Elise’s bare arms like a thousand tiny needles. Two guards stood at the threshold—faces blank, armor glinting faintly in the torchlight. She didn’t resist when they motioned for her to stand. Her wrists were bound, her steps heavy, her eyes shadowed from a night with no sleep.

“Move,” one of them said. His tone carried no cruelty, only procedure.

She did.

The walk through the underground passage was suffocating. The walls were slick with moisture, the ceiling low enough that the tallest of the guards ducked every few meters. The echo of their boots on the stone floor fell in rhythm with the pounding in her chest.

No one spoke. Not when the corridor began to narrow. Not when the scent of earth and moss thickened the air. Not even when the faint glow of moonlight appeared ahead, filtering through a jagged crack in the stone like a blade of silver.

Elise lifted her chin. The tunnel opened into a v

Elise felt it before she understood it.It started as pressure beneath her skin, a slow tightening that wrapped around her veins and muscles like invisible hands. She lay curled on the glowing floor of the spectral boat, breathing shallowly, her fingers digging into the light beneath her as if trying to anchor herself.Something was moving inside her.Not pain. Not exactly.Energy.It surged in uneven waves, rising and falling, spreading outward from her chest, then snapping back again like a tide pulled by a moon that refused to stay still.Elise groaned softly and rolled onto her back, staring up at the colorless sky. Her heart hammered too fast. Each breath felt too shallow, as if her lungs could not keep up with what her body demanded.“What is happening to me,” she whispered. The sea answered. Not with words. With motion. The glasslike surface beneath the boat shuddered. A ripple spread outward, then another, then several at once, colliding into uneven swells that rocked the vess

Elise did not know how long she drifted.Time did not move normally anymore. There was no sun to mark hours, no land to anchor distance, no voice calling her back. There was only motion and stillness layered together, like the world itself had decided to hold its breath. She lay unmoving in the spectral boat, her body slack, soaked through, hair plastered against her face and shoulders. The glow beneath her dimmed and brightened slowly, responding to a pulse it seemed to share with her heart. The storm that had swallowed the island had burned itself out somewhere behind her, leaving nothing but mist and silence in its wake. The sea carried her gently now.Too gently.Elise slipped in and out of consciousness without warning. Sometimes she thought she was awake, staring up at the pale sky, only to realize moments later that she had been dreaming again. Other times, she dreamed so vividly that waking felt like falling. In one dream, she was a child again. She stood barefoot at the edge

The boat did not cut through the water. It carried Elise. That was the only way she could understand it.She lay half on her side, half on her knees, palms digging into the glowing surface as the island shrank behind her. The vessel moved without wind or oars, driven by the same force that still burned through her veins. Moonlight rippled beneath her hands like liquid glass, warm and unyielding.“No,” she whispered hoarsely. The shore blurred through smoke and flame. The sanctuary that had sheltered her, trained her, believed in her, was collapsing under fire and claws. She could still see them. Shapes moving through the inferno. White cloaks stained dark. Silver light flashing and then going out.“El… Elise!”A scream cut through the roar of the sea.She lurched forward, almost falling from the boat as she clawed toward the sound.Ryn.Her chest seized.“I’m here,” she screamed back. “I’m here, don’t let go, don’t let go.”But the distance stretched no matter how hard she strained. T

The first scream came from the eastern edge of the clearing.Elise turned just in time to see one of the Moonbreathers go down beneath a feral wolf twice his size, its body warped by corruption, jaws stretching wider than any natural form should allow. Silver light flared as another warrior struck it down, but the damage was already done. Blood soaked into the moonlit ground, dark against the pale stone.“They’re breaking through,” someone shouted.Elise lifted her hands, power surging instinctively, crescent fire lashing outward as she forced the wolves back from the inner ring. Her chest burned with exertion, every breath sharp, but she did not slow.“Hold formation,” she ordered. “Do not scatter.”The ferals did not behave like beasts. They moved with purpose. They tested the seals. They circled, retreated, then struck again in coordinated waves. Elise felt it then, clearer than before. They were being driven. Pulled. Fed by something far beyond the island.“Elise.”She spun at the

The seals did not shatter all at once. They failed the way exhausted things always did, slowly at first, then all at once, light flickering unevenly around the clearing as the ancient lunar marks carved into the ground began to dim. Elsa staggered as the last surge of her power bled into the air, her breath coming sharp and shallow, silver veins burning beneath her skin.“Elise,” she said urgently, gripping her granddaughter’s wrist. “You feel it now, don’t you.”Elise did not answer immediately. She was standing very still, every sense stretched tight, heart hammering not with fear but recognition. The ground beneath her feet pulsed faintly, like something breathing beneath stone and soil. The feral wolves circling the clearing did not rush forward yet. They paced. They waited. Their red eyes flicked toward Elise again and again, as if drawn by something they could not see but felt all the same.“Yes,” Elise said finally. Her voice was low, steady in a way that surprised even her. “I

The first feral broke through the trees at a full sprint, and then the forest exploded. There was no warning howl, no buildup. One second the treeline stood dark and silent, the next it vomited bodies. Wolves twisted beyond recognition, bones too long, joints bent wrong, eyes glowing a violent red that did not belong to any moon. They slammed into the clearing with the force of a landslide.“Positions!” Elise shouted. “Now!”The Moonbreathers moved on instinct, not panic. Shields of water and silverlight snapped into place, forming a rough arc across the clearing. The first wave hit them hard. Claws scraped against barriers, teeth snapped inches from faces, bodies crashed and rebounded.Elise felt the impact like fists against her ribs.“Hold the line!” Ryn yelled from her right. “Do not break formation!”A feral hurled itself at the shield in front of him, smashing into it again and again until cracks spidered through the silver surface.“They don’t stop!” someone cried.“They don’t
