[RHIANNON]

Morning came too soon.

I'd barely slept, my mind replaying that surge of emotion from Kael over and over. Nyx had stayed silent through most of the night, which worried me more than her usual commentary.

The training grounds felt different today. Quieter. Fewer wolves. And the ones who were there kept glancing at me with expressions I couldn't read.

I went through my forms anyway, ignoring the attention. The weighted gauntlets felt familiar now, almost comfortable. My body had adapted to the punishment I'd been putting it through.

"You're getting better."

I spun around. Emrys stood a few feet away, arms crossed, observant eyes tracking my movements.

"Didn't mean to startle you." He moved closer, expression neutral but not unkind. "Your footwork's improved. Whoever taught you the basics did a decent job."

"I taught myself." The admission came out defensive.

"Even more impressive then." He picked up a practice staff. "Want a partner?"

I hesitated. Emrys was Kael's Beta. Secon

[EMRYS]The bodies were already cooling when I knelt beside the first one.Dawn was still hours away. The clearing where we'd dragged the rogue corpses smelled like copper and pine resin—blood mixing with sap from broken branches. Most of the warriors had already returned to the packhouse to clean their wounds and check on their family.I'd volunteered to stay behind. Someone needed to catalog what we'd found, and I'd always been better with details than comfort. My gloves were stained dark as I turned the rogue's left arm, examining the crude tattoos and scars that marked most outcasts. Nothing unusual at first glance. Years of violence and survival etched into skin that would never heal properly without pack bonds. Then I saw it.Small. Deliberate. Hidden just beneath the shoulder blade where armor or clothing would normally cover it.A brand. Not a tattoo. The design was simple—three crossed lines—similar to the one we found a few months back.My breath caught.I'd seen this before

[KAEL]I found her in the healing wing.Rhiannon moved between cots with quiet efficiency; her blue dress traded for practical healer's robes. She checked bandages, adjusted pillows, and offered water and comfort in equal measure.Jace lay on the nearest cot, his chest heavily wrapped. Rhiannon sat beside him; one hand pressed gently over the worst of the wounds. Her eyes were closed. Concentration creased her forehead.I watched as she whispered words of healing and peace, her touch soothing and reassuring, though still developing but undeniably powerful. Jace's breathing eased. Color returned to his face. One thing was certain—Rhiannon's skills as a healer were matched only by her compassion and dedication to those in need. When Rhiannon finally pulled back, she looked exhausted. Then she scented me.Her head snapped around. Those hazel eyes found mine across the room—and everything else disappeared.I didn't remember crossing the distance. Didn't remember deciding to move. One mome

[KAEL]The war room was crowded when we finally made it back.Marcus had returned with his team—three injured, none dead. Emrys came in moments later with similar numbers.I lowered myself into a chair before my legs could give out. Someone pressed a cup of water into my hands. I drank without tasting it."Report." My voice sounded hollowed out.Marcus went first. "Six rogues on the northern border. Coordinated attack pattern. We drove them back, but they retreated in formation, not panic.""East was similar," Emrys added. "Eight total. They withdrew when we engaged, like they'd achieved their objective just by making us respond."I stared at the map. At the three marked positions that suddenly looked less like random attacks and more like calculated probes."They were testing us." The words came out flat. "Measuring response times. Assessing our strength.""To what end?" Marcus asked."I don't know yet." I leaned forward, pressing my elbows on my knees. "But someone sent them. Someon

[KAEL]The war room doors slammed open under my palms.Five enforcers fell in behind me without needing orders—Marcus, Daren, Finn, Rowan, and Jace. Warriors who'd fought beside me through enough battles to know when silence mattered more than questions. The Harvest Feast already felt like something from another lifetime. Rhiannon's face—those hazel eyes wide with fear as Emrys pulled her toward safety—burned behind my eyelids every time I blinked.I shoved the image down. Locked it away. Leaders didn't get to be distracted. The oak table dominated the center of the room. I spread the territory map across its surface with both hands, my ceremonial leathers suddenly feeling too formal, too constrictive for what was coming.'Focus,' Saen growled from within. 'Our mate is safe. The pack needs us now.'Safe. The word tasted wrong. Nothing about tonight felt safe.Marcus moved to my right without prompting, already marking defensive positions with small stones pulled from his pocket. The m

[RHIANNON]Music resumed. Laughter returned. The feast officially began as pack members moved toward tables laden with food, as children resumed their chaotic games, and as the carefully maintained peace of Crescent Moon territory expanded to include celebration.Kael guided me toward the head table where Emrys, Isolde, and several elders waited. My legs felt unsteady. My heart still was racing from his speech—from the way he'd looked at me in front of everyone, like he was declaring something he'd been holding back too long."You okay?" he asked quietly as we walked."I don't know."Honest. Raw. Terrifying. He nodded like he understood. "Neither am I."That simple admission—that he felt this uncertainty too—somehow made everything easier. We reached the table. Isolde smiled warmly, gesturing to the seats saved beside her. Emrys raised his cup in silent salute, dark eyes knowing. The elders watched with expressions ranging from approval to curiosity.I sat carefully, hyperaware of eve

[RHIANNON]The gong sounded as we stepped over the threshold—a deep, resonant tone that echoed through the manor and signaled the feast's beginning. My pulse jumped. Around us, doors opened and pack members emerged in their finest, voices rising in excitement as everyone moved toward the courtyard where music had started in earnest—drums and stringed instruments weaving together into something joyful and ancient. Laughter echoed off stone walls. Someone sang a traditional blessing song, voice rising clear and bright.Arie linked her arm through mine, steadying me as we joined the flow. The corridor felt longer than usual, every step weighted with anticipation I couldn't quite name.My heart hammered against my ribs. Nyx pressed close beneath my skin, her presence both comfort and warning.'He's waiting,' she whispered. 'At the end of the hall.'I knew before I looked. The corridor opened toward the courtyard entrance, torchlight spilling golden across the threshold. And standing there
