Ivy sat on the edge of the bed for a long time after Kade let her walk away, staring at nothing, replaying her own voice shaking in front of a room full of strangers.

A knock came at the door an hour later. Sharp. Businesslike.

"It's Elena," said a voice through the wood. "I'm not here to make things worse. I wanted to say the meeting shouldn't have gone that way. Damon had no right to say it like that, in front of everyone."

Ivy walked over and opened the door partway, not all the way.

"Is that an apology?"

"It's an observation." Elena's face was as composed as always, no softness in it that Ivy could find. "I still think you walked into something you don't understand the size of. That hasn't changed. But you didn't deserve to hear it that way, from him, in a room full of people deciding your future for you." She paused. "Get some rest. Tomorrow will be worse before it's better."

She left before Ivy could say anything else, heels sharp on the floor, same as the first day.

Ivy closed the door and leaned against it, more unsettled by that than she would have been by outright cruelty. At least cruelty was simple.

She didn't call Kade. She didn't call Dani, either — there wasn't a version of this she could explain over the phone that wouldn't sound like the beginning of a breakdown. Instead, without really deciding to, she found herself scrolling to a number she'd only called once before, the day she signed the contract.

Priya picked up on the third ring.

"Ivy? It's late. Is everything okay?"

"Define okay." Ivy sat down hard on the floor, back against the bed, phone pressed tight to her ear. "The whole pack knows I'm pregnant. They know it happened after one pairing. Kade's cousin announced it in front of the entire council like it was a weapon, and now everyone in that house is looking at me like I'm either a miracle or a threat, and I don't understand which one is true."

Silence on the line. Long enough that Ivy checked to see if the call had dropped.

"Priya?"

"One pairing," Priya said, quiet now, all the brisk professionalism gone out of her voice. "That's — Ivy, I need you to think back to your intake paperwork. Did anyone ever ask you about your family history? Grandparents, specifically?"

"There was a form. Ancestry questions. I didn't think much of it."

"You wrote that your maternal grandmother died before you were born and your family didn't talk about her much. Do you remember that?"

Ivy's stomach went tight. "How do you remember that? You must screen a hundred candidates a year."

"Because it flagged something in the system," Priya said. "Something I wasn't supposed to look into further, and did anyway, because it didn't sit right with me. I found an old registry record. Sealed, mostly, but not sealed well enough if you know where to look."

"What kind of registry."

Priya's voice dropped lower, like she was checking that she was alone before she said it.

"A pack registry. From sixty years ago. There's a name on it that's close enough to your grandmother's maiden name that it can't be a coincidence. A woman cast out of her pack for marrying a human. Stripped of standing, records altered, the kind of thing packs used to do to erase someone completely." A breath. "Ivy, I think your grandmother wasn't just human. I think she was one of them, and I think somebody spent sixty years making sure nobody would ever be able to prove it."

Ivy couldn't speak for a moment. The room felt too small and too big at the same time.

"Why didn't you tell me this before I signed anything?"

"Because I wasn't sure. Because it wasn't confirmed, and dropping something like that on a woman about to sign a life-changing contract felt cruel if I was wrong." Priya's voice cracked, just slightly, the first real crack Ivy had ever heard in it. "I should have told you anyway. I'm telling you now because whatever's happening in that house, you deserve to walk into it knowing what you actually are, not just what everyone else keeps deciding about you."

"Does Kade know?"

"I don't know what Kade knows," Priya said. "But if Damon's people are as sharp as I think they are, they'll find that same registry eventually, if they haven't already. And Ivy — if a bloodline like that gets confirmed, this stops being about whether Kade lied to you. It becomes about whether your child even has a legal claim to inherit anything at all."

The line went quiet again, and somewhere down the hall, Ivy heard footsteps stop right outside her door.

The pack's legal counsel confirmed it within an hour — a junior associate, new to the firm handling the Ashgrove land transfers, had needed a placeholder name for the shell company and pulled it straight from a briefing document without understanding what the word actually meant to anyone involved."An honest mistake," Kade said, pacing the length of his study while Ivy sat curled in the armchair by the window, Rowan asleep against her shoulder. "That's almost worse than sabotage. At least sabotage would mean someone was paying close enough attention to be dangerous on purpose.""Careless mistakes are dangerous too," Odalys said from the doorway, where she'd arrived within the hour of getting Kade's call, expression grim. "Perhaps more dangerous. Sabotage can be traced to a motive. This was simply bad luck wearing the shape of a bureaucratic form.""Can we fix it? Rename the company, bury the old filing?""We can try," Rhys said, laptop open on the desk, already three tabs deep into c

Sarah Chen didn't look like Ivy expected. Younger, for one thing, maybe thirty, with a canvas bag over one shoulder and the kind of patient, watchful calm that seemed more dangerous than any aggression could have been."Mr. Voss." She offered a hand at the gate, and Kade shook it, easy and controlled, nothing in his face betraying the tension Ivy could feel radiating off him even from ten feet back. "Thank you for seeing me. I know it's unusual, showing up like this.""You said land use. My assistant mentioned county permits." Kade's voice was smooth, unbothered, a tone Ivy hadn't heard from him since the council hearing. "I'm happy to answer questions, though I confess I'm curious why a reporter drove two hours out for what sounds like a fairly dry municipal story.""Dry stories sometimes turn into interesting ones." Sarah's eyes moved past him, briefly, taking in the house, the grounds, cataloging something Ivy couldn't guess at. "I've been tracking a pattern of land acquisitions in

Dani arrived Saturday morning, overnight bag in one hand, deep suspicion written all over her face the second she stepped out of her car and got a good look at the compound's gate."Okay," she said, staring up at twelve feet of iron like it might start talking to her. "This is either a cult or a cartel, and I need you to tell me which one before I walk through that gate.""Neither," Ivy said, hugging her tight. "It's actually so much stranger than either of those."She told her everything on the back porch that afternoon, Rowan napping upstairs, Kade sitting close but letting Ivy carry the story herself. The clinic. The change. The full moon and the bond and the succession fight and the Ashgrove reveal, all of it, laid out plain the way she wished someone had laid it out for her, three weeks before her whole life turned into something out of a folktale.Dani didn't say anything for a long time after Ivy finished. She just stared at the roses, jaw working, processing in the particular

Dani called on a Tuesday afternoon, voice tight in a way Ivy hadn't heard from her since before any of this started."I need to ask you something," Dani said, "and I need you to actually answer me this time instead of giving me the vague version."Ivy shifted Rowan onto her hip, heart already sinking. "Okay.""A reporter came by my work today. Asking questions about you. About some kind of 'incident' out near where you moved. Animal attacks, unexplained hospital transfers, a security firm buying up land permits under three different shell names." Dani's voice dropped lower. "Ivy, she had photos. Blurry ones, night-vision, something big in the trees near a stone wall. She asked if I knew anything about the Voss family. I said no. I don't know if she believed me."Ivy's stomach dropped straight through the floor."Did she leave a card? A name?""Sarah Chen. Independent journalist, apparently working on something bigger than one weird sighting. She said she's been pulling records for alm

The baby came three weeks early, on a night without a full moon at all, which Ivy would later decide felt exactly right — proof that some things in her life could finally happen on nobody's schedule but her own.She labored for eleven hours in the private wing Kade had built for her that very first week, back when she'd thought this whole arrangement was just a business deal with strange terms attached. Margaret sat on one side of the bed, gripping her hand tight enough to bruise. Kade stayed on the other, steady through every hour of it, murmuring something low and constant that Ivy only half understood but held onto anyway."You're doing so well," Margaret kept saying, tears streaking a face that had gotten stronger every week since the truth came out, since the medicine started working better, since she'd stopped having to pretend she didn't know what her daughter had married into. "Almost there, sweetheart. Almost there."When the baby finally came, the whole room went quiet for o

Thorne agreed to meet two days later, on neutral ground at the edge of Voss territory, a clearing chosen because it belonged to neither pack and both at once.Ivy stood beside Kade and Odalys, security spread wide but not crowding close, and watched Thorne walk into the clearing flanked by four of his own people. He was younger than Ivy expected, sharp-eyed, carrying himself with the same restless energy she'd felt in Corin the night he'd broken into her mother's house."You came," Thorne said, eyes moving over the three of them, lingering longest on Ivy. "Braver than I expected, coming to me instead of hiding behind Voss walls.""I'm not hiding from anything," Ivy said. "I came because this is my choice to make, not something to be decided around me by people who've never actually asked what I want.""And what do you want?""Peace," Ivy said simply. "Between my bloodlines, both of them. Not a war fought over me like I'm territory to be claimed."Thorne's jaw tightened. "Ashgrove was
