Elena's POV

"Long time no see, Elena."

My name in his mouth felt like a blade sliding between my ribs.

I couldn't move. I couldn't even blink. The mask lay on the floor between us, and with it, every wall I had built over five years.

"Lucien." His name slipped out before I could stop myself.

Something dark flickered across his face. He crossed the distance between us in two long strides and closed his hand around my arm, not rough like the drunk man from before, but firm enough that I knew I wasn't going anywhere.

"Don't say my name like you have any right to it," he said.

In that moment, my entire world broke. I wanted to hide. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.

"Let go of me,” I cried, struggling away from his grip but that did little to deter him.

"No." His voice came off in a firm way.

He pulled me through a side door into the private lounge, away from every stare in that club. The door shut behind us with a heavy click, and suddenly it was just the two of us and years of silence.

He stared me over like I was a ghost. To him maybe I was.

"You're dead," he said. His voice shook, just a bit. "I watched them lower an empty casket into the ground. I stood at your grave, Elena. I put flowers on dirt that had nothing of you underneath it."

"I know."

"You know?" He laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Five years, and that's all you have to say to me?"

The tension in the air wavered slightly. If only he knew the full story. But I wasn’t going to clear the air. No. It was too late for that.

"What do you want from me, Lucien?"

"The truth would be a good start."

I wrapped my arms around myself, suddenly aware of how little my costume covered. His eyes followed the movement, and something possessive burned behind them.

"Cover yourself," he said sharply, pulling off his own jacket and dropping it over my shoulders. "I don't want to think about how many men have seen you like this."

"I don't answer to you anymore."

"You were mine before you were anyone else's." He stepped closer, close enough that I could feel the heat coming off his body. "My father's stepdaughter. My stepsister. Do you understand what that made us, Elena? What we risked, just to be together? You actually dared to fake your death and escape."

I flinched.

"Then explain it to me." His eyes searched mine, desperate and furious at once. "Because for five years I've imagined every version of that night. You in his bed. You laughing behind my back at the fool who gave up his birthright for you. Tell me I imagined it."

"You didn't imagine what you saw. But you never once asked me why."

"Why does it matter why? I saw you with my own eyes."

"It matters because you never gave me the chance to explain before you walked yourself off to duty and hate. You saw me in bed with your uncle and didn’t care to ask me why. You only heard what you wanted to hear and then you left.”

His jaw tightened, and for a moment I saw something like doubt cross his face, before it hardened again.

"Don't turn this around on me.”

"Then stop pretending you already know everything."

He leaned in, and I forgot how to breathe. His face was inches from mine.

"Where have you been sleeping the last five years, Elena? Whose bed? How many wolves have had the chance I never gave myself again after that night?"

"That is none of your business."

"Everything about you is my business." His fingers found my jaw, tilting my face up to his. His voice dropped lower. "You still smell the same. Five years, and you still smell like something I used to call mine."

My whole body betrayed me. I hated how my pulse jumped at his touch, how some traitorous part of me leaned toward him instead of away.

The way his eyes made my insides squirm for his body. I missed that now I was before him.

All those nights… all those kisses, those beds we shared. The memories came back with so much force, my eyes welled up from the pain of his absence as I struggled to get away from him.

"Let go," I whispered, without much conviction.

"Say it like you mean it."

I didn't answer. I couldn’t.

His mouth almost brushed mine, a breath away, close enough that I could taste the whiskey on his lips before he pulled back sharply, as if he'd caught himself doing something he swore he'd never do again.

"No," he muttered, more to himself than to me. "Not like this. Not until you tell me the truth."

"There's nothing to tell."

"Liar." His hand tightened around my wrist. "You're hiding something. I can feel it. A wolf always knows when someone is lying to him."

"You don't know anything about me anymore. I’m not the Elena you used to know."

"Then let me learn." His eyes turned colder, more decided. "I'm leaving for Crescent Fang tomorrow night. And you're coming with me."

My stomach dropped. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

"I have a life here, Lucien. A job. A…” I stopped myself. He couldn’t know about Eli. “I'm not going anywhere with you."

"You faked your own death to escape me for some reason," he said, his voice low and merciless. "Do you really think I'm going to let you disappear a second time?"

"You can't force me to go back there."

"Watch me."

I stared at him, my heart hammering so hard I was sure he could hear it.

"I don't care what excuse you give me," he said, stepping back at last, straightening his cuffs like a man closing a business deal instead of destroying a life. "Pack whatever you need. I'll send a car for you tomorrow at midnight."

"And if I refuse?"

He looked back at me, and for the first time since he had said my name, he almost smiled, but it was cold and a little cruel.

"Then I'll make sure everyone in this city knows exactly who Coco really is."

Lucien's povMy hands gripped the steering wheel tighter than necessary as I drove, my jaw clenched so hard it ached. Every mile felt too slow, every red light an insult, and under the anger boiling in my chest was fear.I forced myself to breathe, to loosen my grip on the wheel. Celeste would still be there when I got back. I'd deal with her then. Right now, only one thing mattered.I pulled into the hospital lot and was out of the car before the engine had fully stopped, moving fast through the sliding doors toward the reception desk."Elena," I said, breathless, gripping the edge of the counter. "I'm looking for Elena. I'm her emergency contact."The receptionist typed quickly, then nodded, gesturing for a nurse nearby. "This way, sir."The nurse led me down a corridor, her pace fast, glancing back at me with a calm expression. "She's stable now," she said, "but she's been through a lot. She's been crying on and off since she was admitted. I'd ask that you stay calm when you go in…

Celeste's pov"You had no right," Lucien said, his voice shaking with a fury I rarely see from him, even in our worst arguments. "No right to go there and do what you did."I lifted my chin, unbothered by the storm building in his eyes. "I have every right. I acted like a woman who's been cheated on. I acted like a woman who finally decided to handle her own business since her husband was too busy… or too weak… to handle his.""You attacked her," he said. "You put her in the hospital, Celeste. She's in critical condition.""And?" I crossed my arms. "I'm pregnant now, Lucien. In case that little detail slipped your mind. It's not as though you'll need her anymore. You have a pack to run. A company to actually show up for. A family. A child coming in a few months, one you're going to need to actually be present for, whether you like the timing or not.""You're insane," he said, already turning toward the door."Where are you going?" I demanded. He turned back just long enough to spit th

Lucien’s povI sat in my study for what felt like an hour, staring at the same blank page in front of me, unable to focus on anything except the conversation I still hadn’t had with my father.Celeste had already made her intentions clear… she was going to announce the pregnancy whether I supported her or not… but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I needed to get ahead of it somehow, find some way to control how this news landed before it exploded across the entire pack.I finally pushed back from my desk, deciding I needed to talk to her first. Try to find some middle ground, some version of this where I wasn’t blindsided in front of the elders.I stepped out into the hallway just as she was making her way up the grand staircase, her heels clicking against the marble, a victorious smile on her face.“Where were you?” I asked, looking at her outfit as I stopped at the top of the step. She glanced back at me, unbothered. “Astringe. Wanted to see someone.”I frowned, “Why would you go t

Elena’s povThe bell above the door rang a bit as my customer gathered his wrapped gift, smiling at me as I had just handed him something priceless instead of a scarf and a bottle of perfume.“You really are the best in this town,” he said, tucking the bag under his arm. “I’ll be sure to tell my friends to patronize you.”“Thank you so much,” I said, smiling as I walked him to the door. “I’d really appreciate that.”“I will,” he promised, and with a final nod, he stepped out into the afternoon sun.I turned back to the shop, already reaching to straighten a display of scarves, when the bell jingled again. I looked up, expecting another regular, and instead found myself staring at a woman I had never seen before… dressed in clothes so elegant they looked like they belonged in a magazine spread rather than a boutique in Astringe, flanked by two huge men waiting just outside the door.Something about her made the hair on my arms stand up, although I couldn’t place why.I pushed the feeli

Celeste’s povThat one gave me a moment’s pause. Kaelan was a different animal. He was sharper, more suspicious, harder to manipulate than his son.“His father is trickier,” I admitted. “But he’s already old. Already stepped back from the throne once. If Lucien falls, and there’s no clean line back to him without dragging up old wounds… the missing wife, his dead stepdaughter who slept with his dead brother, the elders may not want him back at all. Wow, Lucien’s family really has a lot of issues.”“You know about Mary?” Gideon repeated, his brow furrowing.“Yes, I do,” I said. “His stepmother. Lucien mentioned her once, angrily, during an argument I overheard. He’s not very subtle.” I shrugged. “I don’t know the full story yet. But it’s something. A weakness. Every man has one, and his father’s is wherever that woman is.”Gideon exhaled slowly, leaning back in his chair, staring at the ceiling like he was trying to process how quickly this conversation had spiraled from an argument in

Celeste’s povGideon scoffed, shoving back from his desk like the distance would somehow put more space between him and what I’d just said.“What madness is this,” he muttered, shaking his head. “What has gotten into you? Am I supposed to be alpha of some pack Lucien is already overseeing, or your home pack which you were born into? Because those are two very different things. I doubt your father would roll over and accept me taking over his position as alpha.”I smiled wider. “You’ll be alpha of this very pack. You’ll dethrone Lucien and take over.”He almost screamed. “Is there something wrong with you?! Is it… is this a pregnancy thing? Has it started messing with your head already? I’ve heard some women can go crazy when the hormones kick in. Is this it?”I laughed, pushing off the edge of the desk and pacing slowly across the room. “Relax. It was just a question.”“It wasn’t just a question,” he said, following me with his eyes. “You don’t just ask someone ‘how would you like to
