Chapter 2

作者: Shirley
"According to Article Three of the Pack Defense Accord, mixed-unit formations can confuse the chain of command and increase the risk of internal conflict."

I stood in the center of the council hall, my voice cold and formal.

I wanted to be rid of Kaiden.

In this life, I refused to owe him anything, and I refused to be a tool for his repentance.

But my reasoning clearly infuriated my pack sisters.

Clara's eyes widened in disbelief as she hissed,

"Elara, are you crazy? That's Alpha Kaiden's elite guard! We're talking about the most sought-after males in the entire pack!"

"If we want to avoid fighting over males on the road, it's best if we travel separately," I replied, my expression unchanged.

"Please, it's Kaiden! I'd volunteer as bait just to get a whiff of his scent!"

Clara's words were met with a chorus of swooning sighs.

They hadn't tasted the bitterness of being ignored by their mate for thirty years. They were so naive.

I sneered inwardly.

I had assumed that with Kaiden's arrogant Alpha nature, he would leave me alone after being rejected so publicly.

I never expected him to contact me through our mind-link.

"You don't dare let me join you?"

His voice was electric, sending a shiver down my spine.

I snapped my head up, my gaze meeting Kaiden's on the high platform.

He rested his chin on one hand, the collar of his black shirt slightly open, revealing a tantalizing glimpse of his collarbone.

His deep-set, wolfish eyes were locked on me.

"Let's make a bet," his voice echoed in my head, laced with insufferable arrogance. "If you win, I'll withdraw the order. If you lose, you take me with you."

I frowned, about to sever the link.

He let out a soft, provoking laugh. "What's wrong? The pack's former top warrior doesn't have the guts for a little challenge?"

"What's the challenge?" I retorted.

"Meet me on the training grounds."

Ten minutes later, the training grounds were packed with curious pack members.

Kaiden had taken off his jacket. His black combat tank top clung to his powerful, muscular frame.

I had to admit, even in this second life, the sight of him standing in the sunlight was breathtaking.

"The rules are simple," Kaiden said, toying with a red silk ribbon as a wicked smile played on his lips. "This is an ancient claiming ritual. If you can withstand my alpha aura for one minute without kneeling, you win."

The crowd erupted.

It was the most primitive way for an Alpha to declare sovereignty over his mate, overwhelming her with his scent.

Amused laughter rippled through the onlookers.

"Shouldn't we be sparring?" I asked, confused. A challenge like this seemed beneath his status.

"I'm an Alpha, and you're my subordinate. A spar would be bullying," Kaiden said, his presence overwhelmingly aggressive as he closed the distance between us. "This is the contest. Are you scared?"

Well, damn.

Was he trying to intimidate me or humiliate me?

But compared to the nightmare of being entangled with him for decades, one minute of this was nothing.

Besides, we were mates for thirty years. I knew his body better than he did.

I should be immune to his Alpha scent by now.

"Begin," I said coldly.

The moment the word left my lips, the playful look in Kaiden's eyes vanished.

He didn't just release his oppressive aura. He lunged for me.

It was a fiercely possessive embrace. One hand clamped around the small of my back, slamming me against his unyielding chest.

I instinctively tried to fight back, but he was too strong.

An intense Alpha scent, a mix of rainforest and cedar, crashed over me like a tidal wave, threatening to drown my senses.

The wave of heat was so intense I wanted to flee, but as his hand stroked the back of my neck, a tingling sensation urged me to surrender.

My knees went weak.

Damn it. This nineteen-year-old body wasn't conditioned for this yet.

Kaiden lowered his head, his hot breath fanning across my ear.

"Focus, Elara."

But he didn't stop. He buried his nose in the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply as his hot, wet tongue shamelessly traced the line of my artery.

A jolt of electricity shot from the base of my spine to the crown of my head.

I went rigid, on the verge of melting in his arms.

The jeers and whistles from the crowd faded into the background.

My world narrowed to his overpowering scent as it furiously eroded my sanity, seeking to brand me as his Luna with an exclusive mark.

I lifted my head and met his eyes through a daze.

No. I snapped back to reality.

This was just his damned Alpha need to conquer.

As cold as he was to me in our past life, his methods were just as skilled in this one.

He wasn't used to being rejected. He wanted to see me submit at his feet like every other she-wolf.

I was done with this false intimacy.

With my last shred of clarity, I fought the instinctual trembling of my body and shoved him away.

He stared at me, stunned, as if he never expected me to break free from such an intense claim.

He probably never imagined anyone would refuse his touch.

After all, the line of she-wolves waiting for his mark could stretch across the training grounds. My past self included.

I took a deep breath to calm my racing heart and sent a cold message through our mind-link:

"I lose."

Kaiden froze for a split second.

Then, he straightened his disheveled collar, his eyes filled with a teasing glint and a knowing smile. "I look forward to our trip together, my Elara."

I turned and walked away, my steps a little unsteady.

The skin on my neck where his tongue had traced burned.

And his scent, that damned cedar, clung to me, refusing to fade.

The next morning, Kaiden woke me before dawn.Gone was the gloomy cloud that hung over him, gone was the suffocating, polite distance. He was like a young wolf on his first hunt, excitedly bundling a still drowsy me into a windbreaker."Hurry, Elara, or we'll be late."I reluctantly let him pull me up the mountain.Kaiden carefully supported my waist, terrified I might misstep on even the smallest loose stone. These were the hands that, in my last life, would only ever offer a polite hand to help me up after a fall. But now, they were hot and strong, clasping my fingers with an undeniable possessiveness. It was a sight I had never witnessed in two lifetimes. When we finally stood at the highest peak of Moon Goddess Peak, the first ray of golden light pierced through the clouds. The biting mountain wind howled past, stinging our faces, but it couldn't blow away the warmth between our clasped hands.I turned to look at Kaiden. The morning light edged him in gold, outlining his sharp feat

I had barely a moment to think "I knew it" before another voice from the tent shattered my assumption. It was Liam. His usually timid voice was now laced with a rough, masculine urgency."Clara... stop messing around..."It was followed by the soft rustle of fabric and Clara's coquettish giggle.I could sense it in the air, the distinct energy of two Betas growing intimate.I froze on the spot. The shattered pieces of the puzzle began to click into place in my mind. That tent belonged to Liam and Kaiden.Just as I was sharing my own with Clara. So, that little devil Clara had used the bathroom excuse to sneak off to be with the one she loved? And that person had never been Kaiden. It was Liam! The sounds from the tent grew more intense, their implication unmistakable. My face burned. I turned and fled back to my own tent in embarrassment. When I slipped back into the tent, Kaiden was still in the same position.Except the panic in his eyes was gone, replaced by the pride and possessive

In my last life, this day marked the anniversary of my death, and Clara's.I had my legs amputated on a cold operating table, while Clara's body had grown cold forever.Grief had surrounded us; the summit trip had become our shared trauma. Now that I had averted the assassination, we were walking leisurely along the mountain path, an infinite future stretching before us.I couldn't help but smile, my steps growing lighter.Although Kaiden's left shoulder was wrapped in thick bandages and his face was pale, he was gradually recovering. We were all alive and well. The relief of our survival made the once-arduous trek feel effortless.Even the thin mountain air seemed to smell of freedom. As night fell, we made camp on the leeward side of Moon Goddess Peak. The campfire crackled, sending sparks flying into the deep night sky.Clara, ever the troublemaker, suggested we tell ghost stories."I heard this mountain used to be the hunting ground of the 'Heartless Phantoms,' who preyed on lone p

After leaving the sauna, Clara and Liam were nowhere to be found.I checked the time and slipped out of the resort.I went to the hotel from my last life. Soon, the stench of rotting flesh and stale blood filled the air.It was the scent of rogues, a simple illusion I had created. To a werewolf's keen senses, it was the most terrifying of alarms."Rogues! We're under attack!"Someone realized something was wrong, and guests poured out of their rooms, half-dressed.I hid in the shadows, successfully luring out the five families from my last life. I breathed a sigh of relief. But when no rogues appeared, they grew suspicious. The fake scent began to fade."What the hell? There's not a damn thing here.""Some pup playing a prank? Who dares mess with me?"The time for the assassination was drawing close. They were grumbling, about to head back inside.Suddenly, a tall figure leaped from the bushes, blocking the entrance."You can't go in! It's an urgent oracle from the Moon Goddess!" Kaide

I stood there in shock. Kaiden was reborn, too.In the cramped compartment, his Alpha heat was scorching, but all I felt was a bone-deep chill. In our past life, his guilt pushed me away with a lifetime of indifference, while my insecurity trapped me in the empty title of Luna.No. I absolutely refused.I looked into his red-rimmed eyes, saw the deep affection in them, and suddenly found it hard to breathe.Yes, this was the Alpha I had loved for thirty years, and he was the one who had hurt me the most.I took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing the thrum of our Mate Bond, and chose to play dumb."Alpha Kaiden, I don't know what you're talking about."I coldly pushed his hands away. "We haven't Marked, and I haven't agreed to be your Luna. Please, show some self-respect.""Then can we start over?""I'm not interested."Kaiden's body went rigid, the light in his eyes dimming. "Elara…"He started to say more, but a sharp knock on the door cut him off."What's going on in there?"The air

On the day we left for the summit, the armored convoy stood ready.Unlike my past life, Kaiden brought not only his elite guard but also his Beta, Liam. The normally decisive and ruthless Beta looked deeply uncomfortable. The she-wolves' gazes shot toward him like searchlights, and a few even stepped forward to offer help with his luggage.I stood in a corner, watching coolly. To my surprise, Kaiden ignored the she-wolves vying for his attention and walked straight toward me.He was carrying a black, runecovered metal case.It was the case containing the pack's sacred artifact. Its importance could not be overstated."Elara, you're in charge of this."His tone was commanding, his delivery matter-of-fact.The jealous glares from the other she-wolves could have burned holes through my back.In my past life, I had taken this as a sign that the Alpha saw me as special. I'd foolishly clutched the case the entire way, not even daring to go to the restroom. But now, I just wanted to keep my d
