“Well, I wouldn’t really say the details are juicy,” I said.

“But I would definitely say they are heroic,” Tarrah interjected.

The girls gasped. “Go on…” Simone pressed.

“Okay, as you well know, I’m not an Ironpaw Pack member,” I began. “I was near the border of your territory when I was attacked.” Tarrah hushed the other’s reactions, allowing me to keep going without a hundred more questions. “I wasn’t in great shape but I managed to walked far enough to make it to Lucas’s uncle’s farmstead. He found me right before I collapsed. He saved my life.”

They all burst out in a simultaneous “aww.”

“So that’s where he was those two weeks he was away?” Lorelei commented.

I shook my head. “No, he actually moved me to the manor house here outside the city. He thought it would be the most private place to nurse me back to health and give us some time to get to know each other.”

“Our Alpha is certainly known for protecting his privacy,” Simone said.

“So, what pack did you come from? Is it hard kn

“Is everyone in agreement?” I yelled over the crowd. There was a quiet pause before a sporadic acknowledgement. I told everyone to disperse and leave the area. To go home before I called guards and started making arrests.I’d negotiated a meeting with one of the protesters and the company owner. There was apparently an issue with the working conditions in the warehouse that had caused the protesters. I hung back to speak further with the owner after everyone had gone.He took us to his office looking quite disheveled and distraught.“Okay, Warren, what the hell happened?” I asked.“I don’t know,” he shrugged. “Yes, there was an accident about two weeks ago. Some kid fell while the loading crane was transferring a pallet into the warehouse. He crushed his hand but nothing permanent.”“They claimed it was from negligence,” I said.Warren sighed. “On the boys side,” he said. “He wasn’t wearing his safety harness. And I will admit the bar should have held up better, but it wouldn’t have b

I had to admit the find was pretty exciting. I definitely wanted to do whatever we could to restore the piece and bring it back to its full glory. However, we wouldn’t be able to determine how possible that would be until we got everything cleared away.“What do you think, Jack?” I asked him. “You want to give us a hand getting some of this done.”“Yeah,” he said surprisingly quick, jumping in to start pulling brush away. “How do you lose a fountain?”We got to work clearing away the overgrowth around the fountain. Tanjie entertained us with a history lesson about the estate and the grounds, including how the fountain came to be. Nova was especially fascinated with the tale. The more we uncovered, the more the story started to come to life. All along the base of the fountain were intricate carvings that told the Alpha Baron’s and his mate’s love story. It was still a beautiful tribute, even in the dilapidated state it was in. Luckily, Tanjie was confident we would be able to bring it

My days were slowly starting to find some routine. When Lucas had encouraged me to dive into this garden project, he really meant it. He helped me when he could, including with interviews and making final decisions on a contractor and suppliers. Within a week, we were ready to start clearing ground.Jack had settled in faster than we expected. He seemed to be enjoying the activities Lucas had signed him up for. He’d even started to talk to me a bit. It was still mostly short sentences, but it was more than when he first came here, which meant a lot to me. And it was good that he was feeling more comfortable because Aunt Lara’s visit had been delayed. She wouldn’t be here for a couple more days. But the three of us seemed to be adapting well enough. It was late afternoon when I was making a quick sandwich back at the apartment before returning to the field. We had cleared almost an acre already and Tanjie, my landscape contractor, said we could start mapping the area. I had just taken

Our lunch went longer than expected. When I finally made it back home, Lucas was out with Jack. Aunt Lara would be here in a couple of days but Lucas wanted to get Jack set up in some summer programs before she arrived. I still wasn’t sure how I felt about the situation. I didn’t want to force the kid to be around me if he didn’t want to, but it also didn’t sit right with me to keep him occupied he could feel I was purposely avoiding him.But we had some time to work all that out. Lucas still planned on having him stay in the packhouse for the whole summer. So we’d find a rhythm eventually. In the meantime, I had plenty to keep myself occupied.By that evening, I found myself hunched over my laptop and the long list of names, phone numbers, and addresses that Tarrah and the girls somehow managed to put together over a series of phone calls and messages this afternoon. I wanted to talk to Lucas before jumping into this any further, but I figured I could start making some notes.I was l

Jack emerged from his room a little before Lucas returned. He didn’t really say anything to me but he did eat the breakfast I offered him. I took that as a win. Once Lucas got home, he went to shower and get dressed for the day while Lucas told me about his conversation with Hunter this morning. I had to admit it was a relief to know my sisters were safe at home and that they were being watched over.Narya and Lorelei arrived shortly after — Narya with a basket on her and Lorelei with a large canvas bag over her shoulder. Both with huge smiles on their faces. They were up to something.“Um… I guess you two have decided where we’re going to eat,” I stated curiously.“We have,” Narya said. “You ready?”“Lead the way,” I said, starting to feed off of their excitement. We made our way through the packhouse and I honestly had no idea where they were taking me. Not until they bypassed the parking deck and started down a walking path onto the grounds.“What are you guys up to?” I pressed.“W

I called Aunt Lara first thing the next morning. She was surprised to know that Daisy and Jack had come to the city at all but she happily agreed to come and spend a few weeks getting Jack situated. The only concern was when she could make it out. She would need to work things out with Uncle Rodney and even then, it may be a week before she could manage it. We hung up with the promise of her getting back to me by the evening. It was the first days of the summer break, so Jack was still asleep. According to Aunt Lara, he likely wouldn’t emerge from his room until noon. That would give me time to get through a short workday. Jaden and Max have already offered to help keep him occupied if need be. There were also a few summer programs I would get him enrolled in.I was sending an email to a friend who ran one such program when my cell phone rang.“Danvers,” I answered without checking the number.“What the hell happened this weekend?” Hunter’s voice came through the line.“A lot,” I repl
