Lyra's Pov
Each step I took away from the ceremony, crushed every bones in my body. I could feel it cracking and eyes wouldn't stop dripping tears.
"Lyra..."
A familiar voice called and when I turned it was mother. For a moment I felt relieved, as though I could lean on her but when a blissful smirk appeared on the corners of her lips, I realized that ones again, I had thought of something impossible.
"Did you think that Asher would chose you as his mate?"
My hands curled into fist. I couldn't understand what was happening, did Asher not find me good enough?
I turn to walk away!
The howls, the screams.
My heart pounded against my ribcage as I tripped over and fell on my butt.
Shame surged through my body in waves as I pushed backwards away from the sound and the photograph that threaten the bones in my body.
Breathing became a secondary thing ones I realized my lungs fought the movement as I tried to suck in a breath.
I quickly stand on my feet about to run off but suddenly I felt my wrist tightened and then dragged backwards with force as I fell on the ground again.
"Where are you off to?" A familiar voice yelled at me and instantly I met the person's gaze. It was no other than my mother.
"I have to get away from here!" I muttered as hot tears stream down my cheeks but as I tried to stand on my feet she pulled me downwards with force.
"Am I supposed to use that as a reason for your negligence?" Her hands collided with my cheeks and it turned red instantly.
"No one else will do it if you leave. Am I to do the work myself? You brat." She cussed.
"Mother, Alpha Asher just announced Devlin as his mate, but not me!"
"What do I care? A slave can't be the Alpha's mate, didn't you think about it? Just do your work and live like you've been living, stop being greedy, it won't pay you."
Each word that left my mother's lips felt like a stab to my already wounded heart.
The pain from her slap still lingered on my cheek, causing tremors through my spine. I could feel my pounding heart and my body shaking.
How could she be so heartless? How could she not understand my yearning for a life beyond this suffocating existence?
Asher drew Devlin closer on the stage and kissed her forehead making me spun around instantly.
But then-
Mother turned me around and held my chin up, her eyes was cold, and a malicious smile twisted the corners of her lips. Without warning, her free hand struck my face once more, causing fresh tears to well up in my eyes.
"You think you have the right to leave? You think you're entitled to something better?" Her voice dripped with venom, each word laced with disdain. "You're nothing more than a slave. Stop feeling offended. Now work!"
She nudge me to the ground. I could feel my body trembling as I tried to stand on my knees.
A sudden pull on my hair, pulled me up. My mother dragged my hair and pulled me towards the dish area.
"Wash the dishes and do the cooking! You need to finish before midnight if not, there will be serious consequences!"
Tears trickled down my cheeks as I sobbed loudly.
"Are you crying? You are a stupid child indeed. I'm sure you must have been mistaken that Asher was your mate. An Alpha can never be mated to a slave, don't you know? You are an omega Lyra. And right now, you should be thinking of your father, the money for this job is to take care of his drugs."
She grunted and then said again, "Who cares if you are mated? Just live your life for your parents, that's the only way the moon goddess will reward you in your after life. Stop being so selfish when your parents need your help."
"Mother!" I yelled, my lips were shaking in fury but no words could escape from them.
Everything mother had said was only because she wants me to be a slave to her for the rest of my life, and not because she cared.
Which parents wouldn't want their child to find her mate?
I was lost! There's no way a mother wouldn't understand the child's pain. She isn't my mother.
I bit my lower lips as the thoughts hovered in my mind. I tried to stand on my feet but I suddenly felt a cold chill on my body.
I quickly became drenched as a cold liquid poured on me, and when I looked up it was mother.
Just as my lips parted to question her a voice shrieked from behind her.
"What's going on there?"
When my gaze met that of the person, I froze instantly.
Asher was standing right in front of me. I couldn't utter a word, my gaze instantly lowered. Slowly, he walked closer and every step made my heart pound even faster, but then-
On the floor, was my mask. My gaze fell on it instantly and it occured to me-
'If I wear the mask, will Asher recognize me?'
But then another thought made me wonder, 'What if he hates my face and that's why he choose Devlin? Did he really hate my face and my identity?'
The thought of it made a sudden wave of frustration ting in my veins and for a moment I felt like dying was an option.
As I stretched my hand forward to pick up the mask, Asher suddenly knelt on one knee in front of me and I froze.
My gaze mellowed as I tried to cover my face with hand.
"Are you okay?" He asked. His voice as sweet as the birds chirping in the morning. I could feel my racing heart as it's beating felt as though it would lunged out of my chest in excitement.
"I'm okay." I muttered, hiding my face from him but then he gave me a hand.
Lyra's Pov His fair skin was flawless. He didn't have much hair, and his nails were not short or long. Though my eyes were mellowed to the ground, I could feel his gaze gawking at me. Goosebumps sprouted from my skin as I listened to my thumping heart. Asher was kneeling before me, and his voice as he asked me again if I was okay was more than soothing to my ears. I could sense the concern in his voice, but as he drew closer, I quickly erupted from my reverie as my mind raced, trying to find a way out of there. He shouldn't see my face... I counted the seconds, desperately searching for a solution. I couldn't let him see my face. I couldn't bear the possibility of him recoiling in disgust like the others when they first saw me. I tried holding his gaze for a brief moment, searching if maybe he had caught a glimpse, but his eyes remained pleasant. He hasn't seen me! A sigh of relief escaped my lips, and for a moment, a surge of hope flickered within me, urging me to escape fr
Lyra's Pov "Who are you?" My heart pounded in my chest as Devlin's piercing gaze bore into me, demanding an answer. The weight of her authority loomed over me, and I struggled to find the courage to respond. Fear coursed through my veins, as I fear of what she is capable of. Its no news how Devlin bully's the servants and maltreat every low ranking wolves of our pack. She was known for her brutality and wickedness that was far from her parents benevolence. There were rumors of how her character never replicate that of the Alpha and Luna of the pack. I hear her steps closing up to me, and shivers run through my spine as I wondered if I was going to be one of her preys. "Who are you?" She yelled. My lips quivered, but no words escaped them. My mind raced, searching for a way out. I couldn't reveal my identity, at least not to Devlin. I might end up becoming her preys for life! Never! 'Gwen!' The name caused my lips to curve into smile as I swiftly turned to stare at her, b
Lyra's Pov "Thank you!" Devlin's voice suddenly sounded like that of a child, as she smiled innocently at Asher. Her face lit up with satisfaction, a sinister smile tugging at the corners of her lips. She clasped Asher's arm tighter, reveling in her victory. I felt a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, as fear consumed me. And just then, Asher walked away. Devlin's steps echoed in the tense silence as she walked towards me, her eyes fixated on the tears streaming down my cheeks. Her lips curled into a sadistic smile, revealing the depths of her cruelty. "Well, well, what do we have here?" Devlin's voice dripped with venomous amusement. "Seems like our little servant girl has found herself in quite a predicament. Laying on top of my mate? How bold of you." I tried to muster the strength to respond, to defend myself, but my voice faltered in the face of her relentless aggression. Fear coiled gripped me as I avoided her gaze. Devlin suddenly laughed, her eyes staring at m
Lyra's Pov My stomach grumbled loudly, the hungry sounds echoing hurting everyone of my intestines. And only then did I perceive the scent of the delicious meal my mother had prepared for Devlin. I had thought it was just fruits, but I was wrong. A flask was beneath the basket, and she carefully covered it up with fruits. It's delicious scent taunting me mercilessly. Tears welled up in my eyes as the reality of my hunger set in. I had been working tirelessly, completing my chores without complaint, yet there was nothing for me to eat. I mustered up the courage to approach my mother, my voice filled with desperation. "Mother, I've been working all day, and now there's nothing for me to eat. Please, I'm starving." She turned to me, her expression filled with disdain. "Starving? You dare complain after all the trouble you've caused? You should be grateful for the scraps that fall from the table of Devlin." "But Mother, I-" "Silence!" she bellowed, her voice cutting through th
Lyra's POV My heart was racing extremely fast, I could hardly think of anything at the moment other than the fear that Devlin might have shot me dead. But if I was actually dead, then how come I had my consciousness and how was I still breathing? I still could not move from where I was standing, however, I could only open my eyes and see for myself what was happening around me, if really Devlin's arrow was stuck in my stomach. My eyes opened and luckily for me, I was still alive and well, however, the wind was cold, especially against my arm that seemed to have been doused with liquid. The liquid was warm against my skin and I could feel goosebumps around the area where the liquid touched. My senses were running wild because I didn't have to think deeply into it to be certain that in fact, I had been injured there. Luckily for me, the arrow did not pierce my arm, but rather it gave it an unsightly graze. The skin was torn open and the flesh around it was hanging like it was mere p
Lyra's POV Somehow, Devlin succeeded in convincing Asher about the game that she thought would be especially fun. They didn't even bother to take us back into the mansion to continue this charade indoors but rather, we were told to kneel on the earth in the woods and apples from God knows where were placed on our heads.. It all happened so fast, minutes ago we were busy assisting those who were hunting and also, specifically, I was getting shot at but immediately we found ourselves on our knees as targets for Devlin to practice her aim. Just like me, there were four other servants who were on their knees and an apple on each of their heads. Devlin was standing in front of us and a few other people had gathered to watch the show. Asher was there and so was Steven and others that I was yet to get acquainted with. Devlin was busy conversing with Asher and Steven about something while the rest of us maintained our positions as target practice for the princess. "This is so inhumane,"
Lyra's POV I felt my heart take a dunk. I have read in books about the feeling of someone's heart falling. I have always felt that it was probably overrated and it wasn't how the artists made it out to be. However, standing there after hearing the words that came out of Asher's mouth without him reiterating it, I wanted to die. My heart felt so heavy, like a boulder I couldn't lift and so gravity brought it down to the earth. This time, my heart was the boulder that was too heavy for me to carry. From behind him, Devlin chuckled bitterly and swung an arm over Asher, "I cant believe there exists people who actually look like this. Is this why you're always wearing a mask?" I remained shut, my lips quivered and I felt tears fall from my eyes as I stared at the two of them. Asher wasn't saying anything but was only looking at me like I was such a phenomenal entity worth the proper scrutiny. He was looking at me like I was an alien and Devlin still wouldn't shut up even after she
Lyra's POV I couldn't stay asleep for obvious reasons and when I began to come to, the sound of fire cackling and the heat was what I could feel first and then there was the unusual hardness of the surface where I was laying on. It wasn't hard for me to put all of that together, we were still in the woods and I was lying on the ground. My hands were tied by a rope and I was considered powerless as my hands were restricted. I successfully opened my eyes and just like I had thought and felt, there was a fire in the middle of the gathering. There were at most four tents set up in the area and the rogues were busy going about their own thing while the ones I was laying in their presence were having dinner. Some sort of animal was tied and hung over the fire to be cooked and become edible. They were all talking, getting in one conversation or the other so that nobody noticed that I was awake. I cleared my throat to announce that I was finally up, however that sound was overpowered by t
