Sienna's POV

The sharp, heavy crack of split oak echoed through the quiet clearing, sending a flock of black sparrows fluttering up out of the pine canopy.

I wiped a sweat-soaked lock of dark hair from my forehead with the back of my leather glove, taking a deep breath of the crisp, cool morning air. The heavy iron axe head was buried deep in the center of the wooden chopping block, the log split cleanly in two.

Sienna's POVThe sharp, heavy crack of split oak echoed through the quiet clearing, sending a flock of black sparrows fluttering up out of the pine canopy.I wiped a sweat-soaked lock of dark hair from my forehead with the back of my leather glove, taking a deep breath of the crisp, cool morning air. The heavy iron axe head was buried deep in the center of the wooden chopping block, the log split cleanly in two."Keep your knees bent when you swing," Gideon called out from the edge of the timber porch, where he was sharpening a curved skinning knife on a flat grey whetstone. "If you rely only on your arms, your lower back will be useless by noon.""I am bending my knees," I replied, a small, breathy laugh escaping my lips as I pulled the blade free from the grain.I set another thick block of pine onto the stump, adjusted my grip on the worn hickory handle, and shifted my weight. Four months had passed since the morning I discovered I was carrying twins. Four months of quiet, relentle

  • The Alpha's Unwanted Heir   Chapter 14

Jaxson's POVThe heavy iron key turned in the lock with a sharp, dry snap.I pushed open the door to the eastern watchtower, taking three long steps into the cold, windy space at the top of the wall. The morning air was biting, picking up dust and dead leaves from the stone courtyard below and tossing them into the grey sky.Caleb was standing by the stone edge, his heavy woolen coat wrapped tight around his shoulders. He didn't turn around when my heavy boots struck the floorboards. He just kept staring out toward the dark line of pine trees across the border."Where is the new tracker?" I asked, my voice flat, tight, and rough from another night without sleep."I sent him back down to the courtyard," Caleb said softly, his eyes fixed on the horizon. "He was wasting his time anyway."A cold knot squeezed in the middle of my chest. I stepped up beside him, resting my big hands on the freezing stone wall. The wind blew right into my face, carrying the sharp smells of dry wood, old leav

  • The Alpha's Unwanted Heir   Chapter 13

Sienna's POVThe morning sun came through the small glass window of the cabin, casting soft yellow squares across the wooden table. A light breeze stirred the pine branches outside, bringing the crisp, clean scent of dry leaves into the room.I sat quietly on the low wooden stool while Gideon leaned over me, his dark wooden stethoscope pressed gently against the lower curve of my belly. For the past two weeks, the morning sickness had finally started to ease up. My skin was gaining back its healthy color, and my appetite had returned with a vengeance. I was eating full bowls of warm oat porridge, boiled eggs, and salted deer meat every single day. The thin, starved look I had when I crawled out of the muddy ditch was completely gone.Gideon closed his eyes, his weathered face still as a stone statue as he listened to the faint sounds deep inside my womb. After a long minute, his bushy grey eyebrows pulled together in a tight, sudden line. He shifted the wooden cup two inches to the le

  • The Alpha's Unwanted Heir   Chapter 12

Jaxson's POVThe oak door of the council room slammed shut, the sound ringing through the stone hallway like a gunshot."Alpha!" Beta Caleb called out, his boots thudding hard against the floor as he hurried to keep up with my long strides. "You can't just walk out on the northern envoys. Alpha Vane’s brother came three hundred miles to discuss the trade routes!""I don't care if he walked five thousand miles," I snapped, my jaw clenched so hard a sharp pain shot up into my ear. "If he asks me one more time about moving our border posts ten yards south, I'm going to rip his throat out.""He's asking because it's part of the treaty!" Caleb shouted, grabbing my arm to stop me near the main staircase. The second his hand touched my leather sleeve, my wolf snapped. A violent wave of heat burst through my blood, and I whirled around, shoving Caleb back against the stone wall with enough force to knock the air straight out of his lungs. My eyes flared bright, blinding yellow, and a low, kil

  • The Alpha's Unwanted Heir   Chapter 11

Sienna's POVThe sharp, sour taste hit the back of my mouth before my eyes even opened.I scrambled out from beneath the heavy furs, my knees hitting the cool wooden floorboards with a dull thud. I grabbed the wide clay bowl Gideon kept by the foot of the frame, doubled over, and heaved until my throat burned. Nothing came up except stomach acid and bile, but my body kept shaking, my stomach knotting into tight, painful cramps that left me gasping for air.Outside the small glass pane, the early morning light was pale and grey. The heavy rain from weeks ago had long cleared, leaving only cold, quiet fog hanging low over the pine trees.I leaned my forehead against the rim of the bowl, taking slow, shuddering breaths through my nose. My whole chest felt raw."Take it easy, child," a quiet voice said from across the room.Gideon walked over, his soft leather boots making almost no sound on the floor. He set a wooden cup of warm water next to me, then picked up a dry rag from the washsta

  • The Alpha's Unwanted Heir   Chapter 10

Gideon's POVThe storm was reaching its violent peak, turning the mountain ridge into a chaotic landscape of mud, roaring water, and thrashing pine branches. I moved quietly through the thick underbrush, keeping my heavy canvas cloak drawn tight around my neck. At sixty years old, my wolf was slower than he used to be, but my eyes and ears were still as sharp as a newly honed skinning knife.I was heading back toward my shelter after checking on my fox-tail traps when the sharp scent of copper and fresh rogue sweat caught the cold wind.I froze behind the trunk of an ancient hemlock tree, my hand instinctively dropping to the ivory handle of the hunting blade at my belt. Through the heavy curtain of rain down in the ravine, two men were crouched by the bank of the rushing stream.I recognized them instantly. Kael and his younger brother, Bratt—two ruthless, banished enforcers who inhabited the lower valley, preying on whatever weak or injured travelers stumbled off the main pack road
