Gianna reached the packhouse gates just as the last light faded from the sky.

She pulled her hood down and stepped inside, expecting the usual quiet of an empty entrance hall.

Instead, Cyrus was waiting.

He stood in the corridor with his arms crossed, his posture unnaturally still.

Not the stillness of calm.

The stillness of a man who had already made decisions and was waiting to announce them.

Gianna stopped.

"Where have you been?" Cyrus asked.

His voice was even. Too even.

"Out," Gianna said.

Francine Hale stood frozen in the property owner's office, staring at the signed documents that represented weeks of careful planning now reduced to nothing. Her carefully maintained composure cracked."Who authorized this sale?"Her voice rose sharply."I had an agreement with the owner, we were in final negotiations!"The property owner looked uncomfortable."Ms. Hale, as I explained, your exclusive period expired and this other party made a substantially better offer, I'm running a business, not a charity.""You assured me this property would be mine!""I assured you that if your offer was competitive and submitted on time, we would proceed, you were late and their offer exceeded yours by a significant margin."Francine turned to her lawyers."Challenge this, find a legal basis to invalidate the sale."Her lead counsel shook his head."There's no legal grounds, the transaction was conducted properly and the buyer had every right to make their offer.""Then find something!"Francine

Gianna looked at Maren for a long moment. Then she stood. "I will send my answer to the palace by morning." Maren stood as well and bowed. "Thank you, miss." Gianna turned to the door and called for one of the servants. When the young man appeared, she gestured to Maren. "This is the King's head housekeeper. She has traveled a long way and will need food and a place to rest before her return journey tomorrow. Please see that she is taken care of." The servant nodded and led Maren out of the room. When they were gone, Gianna sat back down across from Alexandra. He was still watching her, his expression unreadable. "Say what you are thinking, Papa," Gianna said. "I am thinking that you already know what you are going to do," Alexandra said. "And you are waiting for me to tell you whether it is the right choice." "Is it?" "That is not for me to decide." Gianna leaned forward. "Then tell me this. Do you think I am making a mistake?" Alexandra was quiet for a moment. Then he s

Nolan stood and walked to the door. He opened it and called for one of the guards stationed in the corridor. "Let Alpha Cyrus in," he said. "Bring him to the outer hall, not the throne room." The guard bowed and left. Gianna looked at Nolan. "Should I leave?" "Do you want to?" She thought about it for a moment. "No." "Then stay," Nolan said. He walked to the outer hall and Gianna followed. The room was smaller than the throne room, with fewer formalities and none of the ceremonial trappings that made royal audiences feel like performances. It was a room for dealing with matters that needed to be handled directly and without spectacle. Nolan stood near the center and Gianna positioned herself off to the side, not hidden but not directly in Cyrus's line of sight when he entered. They waited. A few minutes later, the door opened and Cyrus walked in. He stopped when he saw her. He did not expect her to be here and it showed clearly on his face. His eyes moved from Gianna

The news from Valemont was about Cyrus.Elmund handed the report to Nolan and waited while he read it.Gianna watched Nolan's face but his expression did not change. When he finished, he handed the report to her without a word. She took it and read it carefully.Cyrus had called a formal pack meeting and in it he made a public statement that his former Luna left Valemont under the influence of outside interference and that the divorce was not conducted with his full consent. The statement was being circulated to neighboring packs and two council members had already received copies.Gianna read it twice, her jaw tightening with each line. Then she set it on the table between them."He signed the document," she said."I know," Nolan said."He stood in the courtyard in front of witnesses and signed it without objection.""I know."Gianna looked at the report again. "What is he trying to accomplish with this?""Control," Nolan said. "He cannot control you anymore so he is trying to contro

Gianna arrived at the palace before evening using the route Elmund gave her, with two of Alexandra's guards riding behind her.The journey took four hours and by the time they reached the gates, the sun was beginning to lower in the sky.She did not use the servants' entrance this time. She went through the main gate and dismounted, handing her horse to one of the stable hands who appeared immediately. She gave her name to the herald standing at the entrance."Gianna of Highmoon," she said. "Here to see the King."The herald's eyes widened slightly but he recovered quickly and bowed. "Of course, my lady. Please wait here while I confirm your arrival."He disappeared inside and Gianna stood in the courtyard with her guards behind her.She waited. The herald returned a few minutes later and gestured for her to follow. "This way, my lady."The palace staff received her differently from every other time she had been here. She was shown to a receiving room with high ceilings and large wind

Nolan's hand closed around her wrist and their eyes met. Gianna went completely still. She could see the blazing anger in her eyes but under it, something else flickered there. Recognition? Confusion? She couldn't name. The moment of silence stretched between them, taut as a wire. Then footste
