Gianna used the vial before leaving the palace.

She uncorked it in one of the empty corridors near the servants' entrance and tipped a few drops onto her wrist, rubbing it into her skin the way Nolan had instructed.

The scent that rose from it was faint and clean, with no trace of anything that could be identified as distinctly hers or his.

She corked the vial and slipped it into her pocket, then pulled her hood up and stepped out into the night.

The walk back to Valemont was quiet, the road

The news from Valemont was about Cyrus.Elmund handed the report to Nolan and waited while he read it.Gianna watched Nolan's face but his expression did not change. When he finished, he handed the report to her without a word. She took it and read it carefully.Cyrus had called a formal pack meeting and in it he made a public statement that his former Luna left Valemont under the influence of outside interference and that the divorce was not conducted with his full consent. The statement was being circulated to neighboring packs and two council members had already received copies.Gianna read it twice, her jaw tightening with each line. Then she set it on the table between them."He signed the document," she said."I know," Nolan said."He stood in the courtyard in front of witnesses and signed it without objection.""I know."Gianna looked at the report again. "What is he trying to accomplish with this?""Control," Nolan said. "He cannot control you anymore so he is trying to contro

Gianna arrived at the palace before evening using the route Elmund gave her, with two of Alexandra's guards riding behind her.The journey took four hours and by the time they reached the gates, the sun was beginning to lower in the sky.She did not use the servants' entrance this time. She went through the main gate and dismounted, handing her horse to one of the stable hands who appeared immediately. She gave her name to the herald standing at the entrance."Gianna of Highmoon," she said. "Here to see the King."The herald's eyes widened slightly but he recovered quickly and bowed. "Of course, my lady. Please wait here while I confirm your arrival."He disappeared inside and Gianna stood in the courtyard with her guards behind her.She waited. The herald returned a few minutes later and gestured for her to follow. "This way, my lady."The palace staff received her differently from every other time she had been here. She was shown to a receiving room with high ceilings and large wind

Gianna went to the gate and stopped when she saw who was standing beside the carriage. It was not Nolan. It was Elmund, and beside him was a woman she had never seen before. The woman was older, with silver hair pulled back severely and the bearing of someone who had stood in important rooms her entire life. She wore formal council robes and her eyes moved over Gianna with the assessing sharpness of someone who made decisions that affected kingdoms.Elmund stepped forward. "Miss Gianna, may I present Councilwoman Thera, head of the royal council. She requested to come personally."Gianna inclined her head. "Councilwoman."Thera did not bow. "Miss Gianna. I appreciate you receiving me without notice.""Of course," Gianna said. "Though I admit I was not expecting you.""I am not here on the King's orders," Thera said plainly. "I came on my own because I wanted to see the woman the King sent a forty-year-old book to."Gianna felt Alexandra move up beside her.Thera's eyes moved to him. "

Gianna looked at Maren for a long moment. Then she stood. "I will send my answer to the palace by morning."Maren stood as well and bowed. "Thank you, miss."Gianna turned to the door and called for one of the servants. When the young man appeared, she gestured to Maren. "This is the King's head housekeeper. She has traveled a long way and will need food and a place to rest before her return journey tomorrow. Please see that she is taken care of."The servant nodded and led Maren out of the room. When they were gone, Gianna sat back down across from Alexandra. He was still watching her, his expression unreadable."Say what you are thinking, Papa," Gianna said."I am thinking that you already know what you are going to do," Alexandra said. "And you are waiting for me to tell you whether it is the right choice.""Is it?""That is not for me to decide."Gianna leaned forward. "Then tell me this. Do you think I am making a mistake?"Alexandra was quiet for a moment. Then he set down his c

The Italian restaurant was nice but not exceptional. It was the kind of place that catered to high school students trying to impress dates without breaking the bank.Jason and Lyanna sat across from each other at a corner table, menus open between them."So what looks good to you?" Jason asked with his practiced charming smile.Lyanna scanned the menu without much interest."The pasta probably.""You should try the carbonara, I heard it's amazing here.""Sure, that's fine."The conversation had been like this since they arrived, Jason trying to engage while Lyanna gave minimal responses. She wasn't being deliberately rude but her disinterest was obvious to anyone paying attention.Jason either didn't notice or chose to ignore it."So your brother's pretty intense huh, I saw him at the school once when he picked you up, everyone was talking about it."Lyanna's expression tightened slightly."He's protective.""I bet, I mean with everything that happened to your family when you were you

Three days after Nolan's visit, the whole of Highmoon knew a king had come to their gates and asked for their Alpha's daughter by name. Alexandra did not confirm or deny anything but the servants talked and the market moved information faster than any herald. Gianna heard it from the woman who tended the garden when she came out one morning to check on the plant she had transferred from Valemont. The woman was kneeling beside the flower beds when Gianna approached, and she looked up with a knowing smile. "Congratulations, miss," she said warmly. Gianna blinked. "For what?" "The King's visit, of course." The woman stood and brushed the dirt from her hands. "Everyone is talking about it. A king does not travel that far for nothing." She walked away before Gianna could respond. By midday there were quiet visitors at Alexandra's gate. Not pack members. Alphas from neighboring territories sending representatives with gifts and carefully worded letters of goodwill, the kind writt
