I sat up in my bed, my mind racing. I had always trusted Jason, and the idea of my friend plotting against me was almost too much to bear. But Davina had never been wrong, and I knew that I had to take her suspicions seriously.

I rubbed my eyes and threw on a shirt, making my way to the war room where my commanders were waiting for me. I could tell by the way they stood that they were worried, and I braced myself for the worst.

"Speak," I said, my voice low and steady.

The commander cleared his throat before speaking. "We've captured a group of mercenaries at the border, sir. They were trying to sneak into our territory under cover of darkness."

"Mercenaries?" I repeated, his eyebrows furrowing. "Who are they working for?"

"We don't know, sir. They haven't given us any information yet. But they're well-trained and well-equipped, and we suspect that they were sent by someone who wants to take us do
