THE NAME SHE ASKED FOR

Elaris's POV

The words burn in my mind long after Sennik has finished speaking.

Maevra asked for me.

Not in confusion.

Not because she mistook me for someone else.

She had known exactly who I was.

She had reached for me when she could barely remain conscious.

But that private moment is no longer mine.

The council has taken it and placed it beside the altered cup.

I can already see what they are doing with it.

Maevra was dying.

Her final medicine was changed.

And she asked for me.

Three separate facts.

Placed together they can be made to resemble a confession I never gave.

I keep my expression still.

One of the guards watches me closely.

Perhaps he expects tears.

Perhaps he expects anger.

I give him neither.

If they intend to write this night into a record I will not help them write it incorrectly.

Sennik orders the escorts to move both women inside the outer shrine hall.

The blood moon is already beginning to lose its deepest colour.

Morning is coming.

The examination should have happened hours ago.

Instead I walk into the shrine hall surrounded by guards.

My legs are tired but I refuse the offered arm.

"I can walk."

The guard withdraws his hand.

Virelle is brought through another entrance.

We arrive separately and are kept apart.

Inside the shrine is colder than the courtyard.

The stone walls carry the smell of old incense.

Tables have been cleared for council records.

Chairs have been arranged along the sides.

The examination equipment remains covered in white cloth at the far end.

I notice it immediately.

The truth is still sitting inside this building.

Covered.

Waiting.

And the council has decided that suspicion must come first.

They place Virelle at one end of the hall.

A chair.

A blanket.

A cup of water.

Someone even brings her another cushion when she shifts uncomfortably.

I am left standing.

I do not ask for a chair.

I notice the difference anyway.

So do the guards.

Virelle lowers her head and accepts the attention with a quiet expression of gratitude.

"Thank you."

Her voice is soft.

Fragile enough to invite protection.

I remain where I am.

One of the council attendants eventually points towards a stone ledge along the wall.

"You may sit there."

I walk to it without comment.

The difference is not explained.

It does not need to be.

Virelle looks like someone the council wants to protect.

I look like someone they want to question.

Sennik addresses the remaining council members and escorts.

"The preliminary findings concerning Lady Maevra's final medicine will be formally reviewed when Alpha Averic is able to receive the council."

He pauses.

"Until then both women remain under restriction."

A council scribe begins recording.

"No person currently within these grounds is permitted to leave without authorization."

The order is repeated for the guards.

I listen carefully.

No one mentions the blood-moon examination.

No one says when it will resume.

The entire process that brought us here has been placed on hold.

I finally ask "Does this restriction include the examination?"

Sennik looks towards me.

"The examination will be addressed after the immediate matter is resolved."

Immediate matter.

He does not call it murder.

He does not call it an attack.

Not yet.

But the way everyone is looking at the covered examination instruments tells me the council has found a new priority.

Responsibility.

I am eventually allowed to sit on the stone ledge.

I lower myself carefully.

Both hands settle over my stomach.

The child has been restless since the night before but now there is only a faint movement beneath my palms.

I keep my eyes lowered.

Not because I am ashamed.

Because I know people are watching.

Every reaction can become a sentence in someone else's report.

If I cry they can say grief.

If I become angry they can say guilt.

If I defend myself too quickly they can say fear.

So I give them nothing.

My breathing remains measured.

My answers will be exact.

And until someone asks me a question I will not volunteer a story for them to reshape.

Across the hall Virelle sits beneath the blanket.

She looks towards me once.

Then quickly looks away.

The performance has already begun.

Morning arrives without Averic.

The light enters through the high windows in thin grey strips.

I keep waiting for footsteps that never come.

He is with Maevra.

I know that.

He should be.

Whatever else has happened between us she was his mother.

But another thought refuses to leave me.

The man who forced his way into my chamber after the smoke is now absent when the council begins discussing the death.

He has no idea what questions are being asked.

He cannot hear how Maevra's final request is being interpreted.

He cannot see Virelle being comforted across the room.

He cannot hear my name being associated with the final cup.

I press my fingers against my stomach.

The child moves faintly.

"I am still here."

The words are for the child.

Perhaps they are also for me.

Because with Averic absent I have no one between me and whatever conclusion the council decides to reach.

By mid-morning the shrine has filled with more council members.

The atmosphere changes immediately.

There are additional scribes.

More guards.

Senior healers carrying sealed medical records.

Sennik takes his place at the centre of the hall.

He announces that the latest medical assessment has confirmed the final dose was altered.

Not merely contaminated.

Altered.

The concentration and preparation are consistent with the earlier cups that weakened Maevra.

The council now treats the incidents as connected.

One continuous crime.

Beginning with the earlier attempts.

Ending with Maevra's death.

The words draw a murmur from the room.

I remain seated.

Sennik continues.

"The question before the council is no longer whether Lady Maevra received an altered medicine."

He looks around the hall.

"That has been established."

His next sentence is slower.

"The question is who had the opportunity to interfere with her treatment, and for what purpose."

My stomach tightens.

This is no longer a security review.

It is an investigation into a death.

Sennik does not name anyone.

Instead he orders a list of people who had private access to Maevra during her final days.

Senior healers.

Attendants.

Those responsible for preparing her medicine.

Those who entered her chamber.

The list is short.

Then I hear my name.

"Elaris Veyne."

I lift my head.

Sennik explains that my role as Maevra's caretaker gave me regular access to her medicines and private chambers.

I do not interrupt.

He adds that my access was restricted before the final collapse but the council must still establish precisely when that restriction became effective and whether any earlier access matters.

A scribe records every word.

I realize the danger.

They do not need to prove I prepared the final cup yet.

They only need to establish that I could have handled the medicine at some point.

That is enough to place me inside the story.

Sennik says "Every person on this list will provide a full account."

His eyes settle on me.

"And no account will be accepted without examination against the recorded movements of the household."

I nod once.

"Understood."

Virelle is called before me.

She rises slowly.

Two guards move with her.

She places one hand over her stomach before facing Sennik.

"I don't know what happened to Lady Maevra," she begins.

Her voice trembles.

"I only wanted to help her."

She speaks about bringing comfort.

Checking on the household.

Asking after Maevra when she was ill.

She does not accuse me directly.

That makes the performance more effective.

"I was frightened when I learned the medicine had been altered," she continues. "And now she is gone."

Her eyes fill.

Several council members soften.

Then she lowers her voice.

"I am carrying the Alpha's child."

Her hand settles protectively over her stomach.

"If someone was willing to do this to Lady Maevra how do I know that same person won't come for my child?"

The hall grows still.

Virelle looks towards Sennik.

"I don't want another mother to lose her child."

The words are carefully chosen.

She never says my name.

She does not have to.

Everyone knows who she means.

My name is called.

I stand.

No one offers me a chair.

Sennik begins with the simplest question.

"When did you last prepare medicine for Lady Maevra?"

"Not on the final night."

"When was the last time you entered her chamber?"

"Before I was moved under council restriction."

"Did you handle her final cup?"

"No."

"Did you give instructions concerning her final dose?"

"No."

"Did you have access to the medicine stores after your restriction began?"

"No."

Each answer is short.

Exact.

I do not embellish.

Sennik asks about the smoke attack.

I explain where I was when it happened.

He asks when I was moved.

I give him the time.

He asks where I was when Maevra suffered the final collapse.

"At the shrine."

"Under council escort?"

"Yes."

"Were you ever alone during that period?"

"No."

The scribe continues writing.

I can feel the weight of every person listening.

For once the timeline is not against me.

I was nowhere near Maevra.

Sennik reviews the answers.

He does not challenge them.

Instead he adds another detail.

"During Lady Maevra Thorne's final clear period she specifically requested that the second mate be brought to her."

My throat tightens.

He continues as though reading an ordinary entry.

"The request has been entered into the record as an unexplained detail."

I look at him.

"You know why she asked for me."

Sennik's expression remains neutral.

"We know what she said."

"She wanted to tell me something."

"Perhaps."

The word is deliberately noncommittal.

I look towards the covered examination equipment.

Maevra had been trying to protect my child.

She had known she might not survive.

She had wanted me beside her.

And now the council has reduced that final act of trust to a suspicious detail.

Sennik closes the record.

"Until Alpha Averic gives his account the council will not draw a final conclusion."

The words should reassure me.

They do not.

Because Averic is the person whose conclusion matters most.

And he still has not appeared.

A disturbance erupts at the shrine entrance.

The guards turn.

Council members stop speaking.

Warriors move aside.

Then Averic enters.

For the first time since his mother's death I see him.

His face is pale.

His clothes are still marked by the long night.

He looks like a man who has not slept.

But he does not look towards Virelle.

Not once.

His eyes find me immediately.

The hall becomes completely still.

I cannot tell what he has been told.

I cannot tell what he believes.

Sennik steps forward as though prepared to address him.

Averic raises one hand..

The council falls quiet.

He walks towards me.

One step.

Then another.

He stops several feet away.

For a heartbeat I see the man who stood at my door after the smoke.

Then I see the Alpha who has just lost his mother.

His voice comes quietly.

Not angry.

Not comforting.

Just stripped of everything else.

"Tell me the truth."

I hold his gaze.

His next words cut deeper than any council accusation could have.

"Did you touch her final cup?"

No one in the hall moves.

The question hangs between us.

And for the first time since Maevra died I understand that the answer I give now may decide not only whether the council suspects me-

but whether Averic still believes me.
