Chapter 4

Autor: Eggs Tomato
"Oh, this? A pretty lady's husband's in the hospital. She gave each of us kids one of these robots so we'd stay quiet and wouldn't disturb her husband while he rested. Mister, do you like it too?

"If you really like it, I can give it to you! Huh… that's weird. Why do I suddenly feel like that lady looks a bit like the one in your phone case…"

With every word the little girl said, my heart sank a little further. As soon as she finished speaking, my legs gave out. I stumbled backward and collapsed onto the hospital bed, my face as white as a sheet.

I knew that robot all too well. Ever since Yvonne and I got together, we had devoted ourselves to developing high-sensitivity specialized robots. It had been our dream all these years.

Truth be told, it all started because I might carry a rare genetic disorder. Back then, Yvonne looked at me with teary eyes and said, "I'll run the company, and you bring the tech. Together, we'll develop a robot that can accurately detect genetic disorders. You're going to live a long, healthy life. I'll make sure of it!"

After endless failed attempts over the years, I finally cracked the code a year ago. However, these high-sensitivity specialized robots came with a unique drawback—once they were activated, they could never be restored to their original state.

I had been searching for the right opportunity to test this batch of robots. There had only been a handful of prototype units to begin with, and now Yvonne had given every single one of them away.

When I came back to my senses, I picked up my phone with trembling hands and called Yvonne. The phone rang for a long time before she finally answered, her voice dripping with irritation. "What is it? Have you come to your senses? Are you calling to apologize?

"By the way, Samson, you did it on purpose, didn't you? Why didn't you tell me that green bean poisoning could be this severe? Do you have any idea that because of you, Michael was poisoned by green beans?"

As I listened to her endless accusations and complaints, my eyes filled with sorrow. "When I told you I'd been poisoned by green beans and asked you to take me to the hospital, what was it that you said to me?"

Perhaps because I had bent over backward for her all these years, my sudden rebuttal rendered her speechless.

Moments later, her indifferent voice came through. "How can you even compare yourself to Michael? Michael has always been frail. Green bean poisoning could kill him!

"You, on the other hand, are as healthy as a horse. How could anything happen to you? Besides, aren't you perfectly fine right now?

"Anyhow, I don't have time to argue with you about all this. I'm very busy, Samson. If you're not going to apologize to Michael, I'm hanging up!"

I stared at the robot in the little girl's hands and slowly asked, "Did you give away all my robots?"

"Yeah. So what? It's just a few robots. Can't you just make a few more?"

At the sound of her nonchalant tone, all the emotions I had been bottling up overflowed. "Do you have any idea how special these robots are, Yvonne Ashby? Once they're activated improperly, they're completely ruined! In other words, a decade of my hard work will have been for nothing!"

"Are you out of your mind, Samson? Why are you raising your voice at me? It's just a few robots; is it really worth getting this worked up over?

"Now that you've mentioned it, I might as well let you know that your robotics project is being put on hold effective today. Once Michael is discharged from the hospital, you'll hand it over to him."

"Why the hell would I do that?"

Perhaps sensing the sudden crack in my composure, she let out a sigh and patiently tried to reason with me. "Michael's a newcomer. He needs an opportunity to prove himself. You, on the other hand, have been with the company for almost a decade; you don't need opportunities like this anymore.

"That's enough. Don't be so jealous and competitive. I want you to look out for the younger employees.

"Alright, I have things to take care of here. I'll talk to you later."

Right after that, I closed the livestream, stood up, and headed to the airport. On my way there, Yvonne kept calling me, yet there was no longer any reason for me to answer. When I didn't answer her calls, she started spamming me with messages."Honey, what do you mean by that?""Honey, please answer the phone. Did you see the livestream?""Honey, it's not what you think. I only said that to calm Michael down!""Honey, what's with the divorce agreement you sent Michael? What divorce? Didn't we agree not to get a divorce?" As message after message flooded my phone, I felt utterly annoyed and blocked her completely right then and there. Before boarding the plane, I turned around to take one last look at this city where I had lived for a decade, my eyes filled with anticipation for the future. …After landing in Grandma's hometown, I found a random bed-and-breakfast and settled in. In the days that followed, I fully unwound. I spent my days wandering around the small town and

I went straight to Cosmo's law firm. The moment he saw me, tears welled up in his eyes. He stepped forward, pulled me into a tight embrace, and said in a voice filled with heartache, "Sam, you've lost so much weight."I pushed him away and couldn't help but tease, saying, "I wasn't fat to begin with, okay?" After leaving his law firm, I wandered aimlessly through the streets. It was either a strange coincidence or Yvonne simply thought I was too much of a pushover—the moment I looked up, I spotted Yvonne and Michael just a short distance away. Every single word of their conversation drifted into my ears."Don't get any more ideas and message Samson. I will never divorce him!""I only did it because I love you too much, Vonne!""Now that our plan has been exposed, I'm going to abort the baby. I'm not keeping your child. Samson will be upset if I do."I watched the two of them argue in front of me, curling my lips.I'd known it. How could she truly sever ties with him? After all

I kept backing away, doing my best to avoid Yvonne's touch. "I have a cold. I don't want to pass it to you," I explained apathetically. With that, I ignored her, turned over, and went back to sleep. Perhaps because the night was pin-drop silent, I could hear Yvonne's muffled sobs beside me. If this had happened in the past, I would've certainly turned back around, pulled her into my arms, and comforted her with a heavy heart. However, now, all I felt was irritation. "I'm exhausted. Why don't you head back to your own room? I can't sleep soundly with you here." As soon as my words fell, the world went dead silent. Moments later, I felt her slowly get out of bed and walk out of the room. After she left, I quickly drifted back into a deep sleep. To my surprise, I slept remarkably well that night.…Early the next morning, as soon as I woke up, I casually grabbed my phone from the nightstand and saw a message from Cosmo. "I've drafted your divorce agreement. Come pick it up when

Cosmo texted back, "It's been a decade, Sam. Yvonne isn't that innocent young lady anymore. You're the only one who's stayed exactly the way you were."As I looked at Yvonne, memories of our past suddenly flashed through my mind. Yvonne and I had known each other since childhood and had grown up together. However, we couldn't stand the sight of each other back then.Everything changed when Mom and Dad divorced. They each started a new family of their own, and neither of them wanted me, so I had no choice but to live with Grandma. Looking back, that period of my life was pure agony. People called me an unwanted child, and some even spread rumors that I was the reason Mom and Dad divorced. Gradually, I developed severe depression. Yvonne was the first to notice that something was wrong with me. That day, I suddenly felt like I was completely worthless and that it would be better if I just wasn't around anymore. Yvonne couldn't get through to me on the phone, so she hurried ove

The moment Yvonne saw the picture, the color drained from her face. She grasped my hand and blurted out, "Honey, it's not what you think! Michael photoshopped this image. He's trying to drive a wedge between us. This baby is… ours!" I forcefully flung her hand away and responded apathetically, "Alright. In that case, let's get another paternity test done."After hearing that, her expression stiffened, and she turned her head away. "There's no need for that. The baby really is yours!" she insisted."How much longer do you plan on lying to me?" Watching Yvonne brazenly lie through her teeth, I could no longer contain my emotions. Perhaps she could see how livid I was, or perhaps she knew she really couldn't keep it from me any longer. She grasped my hand again and tried to explain, "Honey, it really isn't what you think. Michael and I were both drunk that night. I didn't expect this to happen, I swear!"Apart from that one time, Michael and I are innocent. Nothing else ever hap

"Honey, we're having a baby! You're going to be a father! Honey, we're finally having a baby—we're going to be parents! "Honey, why aren't you saying anything? Are you too happy?" Yvonne smiled and waved her hand in front of me, her eyes shining brightly. The unexpected pregnancy threw my plans into disarray. I stared blankly at the pregnancy test report before me, my emotions a tangled mess. "You're pregnant?"Yvonne smiled and nodded. Stepping forward, she wrapped her arms around my neck and said softly, "Yep, I'm pregnant!" I casually set the pregnancy test report on the table beside me, walked over to the refrigerator, and pulled out another can of beer.Yvonne frowned at me. She marched up, snatched the beer right out of my hand, and began to reprimand me. "What's wrong with you, Samson? I just told you that I hate it when you drink! Even if you're happy about having a baby, you still can't drink! "Anyway, I haven't eaten yet, and I'm starving. I want some fish soup, so h
