The Encrypted Signal

Alex stared intently at the blinking red dot on his phone.

Nina's Apartment.

His pulse quickened. "Who sent this?" he muttered to himself. There was no sender name, no phone number—nothing but a live location.

His head of security's voice crackled through the phone line. "Sir?"

Alex snapped back to attention. "Keep tracing the sender."

"We're trying, sir, but the signal is heavily encrypted."

Alex started his engine and shifted into gear. "I'm going there."

"Sir, it could be a trap," the security chief warned.

"I know," Alex replied, steering into the busy traffic. "But if Javier is there... I can't ignore it."

With that, he ended the call and sped toward Nina's apartment.

Shadows on the Street

Across town, Nina stood behind her living room curtains, carefully monitoring the street below. The black SUV remained parked exactly where it had been twenty minutes earlier.

"It hasn't moved," she whispered.

Javier walked over, and Nina pulled the curtain back just enough for them to peek outside together. "What do we do?" Javier asked.

Nina let out a slow, anxious sigh. "We wait."

Suddenly, the SUV's headlights flickered on, and both women froze. Instead of driving away, the vehicle slowly rolled forward and stopped directly in front of their apartment building.

A man stepped out wearing a black baseball cap, dark sunglasses, and a gray jacket. He paused, slowly looking up at the building. Javier instinctively took a step back from the window. "Did he see us?"

"I don't know," Nina replied, quickly pulling the curtains completely shut.

Downstairs, the man checked his watch. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a crisp white envelope, and walked straight to the apartment mailboxes. Without looking around, he slipped the envelope inside, returned to the SUV, and drove away.

A Toxic Delivery

About ten minutes later, a sudden knock sounded on Nina’s apartment door. Both women tensed.

Another knock followed, accompanied by the familiar voice of the building's security guard. "Miss Nina? There's something in the mailbox addressed to you. Miss Nina?"

Opening the door cautiously, Nina greeted him. "Yes?"

The guard handed her the white envelope. "A man left this for Mrs. Javier Swan. There wasn't a sender listed."

"Thank you," Nina said.

As soon as the guard walked away, Nina locked the door and slid the deadbolt. Javier looked at the envelope with deep unease. "Another anonymous message?"

"It looks like it," Nina sighed, carefully tearing it open.

Inside was a single photograph. Javier gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

The photo showed Alex standing beside Camille inside the Swan Group headquarters, clearly captured just that morning.

Nina turned the photograph over. Written on the back in neat, chilling black ink was a single sentence:

While you're hiding... she's taking your place.

Javier stared at the words in silence. Nina crumpled the photo in frustration. "Whoever is doing this wants to destroy your marriage."

Javier nodded slowly. "I know. But why?"

The Unreachable Door

Moments later, Alex's Rolls-Royce arrived outside the apartment building. He parked across the street and scanned the windows, but everything looked completely normal.

He reached for his phone to call Javier, but his hand hesitated. What if she doesn't want to see me?

For the first time in his life, the powerful Alex Swan felt genuine fear. He wasn’t afraid of losing a massive business deal or facing a media circus; he was terrified that his wife would refuse to open the door for him.

Upstairs, the apartment intercom suddenly buzzed. Nina frowned. "Who could that be?"

She walked over and pressed the talk button. "Hello?"

Alex’s familiar voice crackled through the speaker. "It's Alex."

Javier froze in place. Nina turned to look at her. "He found us."

An heavy silence filled the apartment before Alex spoke again. "Nina... I know Javier is there. I just want five minutes. I won't force her to come home. I only want to talk."

Nina lowered the receiver slightly and looked at Javier. "It's your decision."

Javier lowered her eyes. A part of her desperately wanted to hear his voice. She wanted to ask him why—why he had forgotten their anniversary, why he had chosen Camille, and why he hadn't noticed how much pain she was in.

But another, wounded part of her heart remembered the empty dining table, the melting cake, and the lonely night she had spent waiting in the dark.

Slowly, she shook her head. "No."

Nina pressed the intercom button. "Alex... she's not ready."

A long, agonizing silence followed. Finally, Alex's quiet, cracking voice came through the speaker.

"I understand. But please... tell her one thing."

"What?" Nina asked.

"I'm sorry," Alex whispered. "I know those words aren't enough anymore. But... I'll spend the rest of my life proving them to her."

The intercom line went dead. Javier closed her eyes as a single tear escaped and rolled down her cheek. She had never expected his apology to hurt this much.

The Enemy Within

Outside, Alex remained standing on the pavement, staring up at the apartment balcony. He knew she was up there, only a few floors away, yet she had never felt so distant.

Suddenly, his phone vibrated in his hand. The screen flashed: Head of Security.

Alex answered instantly. "Speak."

"Sir, we identified the source of the encrypted signal."

Alex straightened up. "Where did it come from?"

The head of security hesitated for a fraction of a second. "It originated... inside Swan Group Headquarters."

Alex frowned, his mind racing. "Someone inside my own company?"

"Yes, sir," the security chief continued.

"And there's more. The anonymous sender gained access using executive-level security clearance."

Alex's face hardened into stone. "Only senior executives have that level of access."

"Exactly," the chief replied. "Which means... the person targeting your wife may already be working right beside you."

Alex slowly lifted his gaze toward the towering, distant skyline where the Swan Group headquarters stood.

For the first time, he realized the greatest threat to Javier and his family wasn't waiting in the shadows outside—they were already sitting inside his inner circle.

Then, in a low voice, he said, "...Come with me."Thirty minutes later, the four of them arrived at Swan Mansion. Camille stared at her phone long after the anonymous call ended, the chilling warning echoing in her mind: "They'll think you betrayed them." Her heart pounded as the terrifying realization set in—someone had accessed her account, and they wanted her to take the fall. Without wasting another second, she grabbed her handbag and hurried to Alex’s office.Inside the security room, Alex was intently studying the login records when one of the analysts cleared his throat. "Sir, the access originated from Miss Camille's executive account," the analyst reported. Alex folded his arms, remaining skeptical. "That doesn't prove she did it." Another analyst interjected, noting that the password had been entered correctly, though admitting it could have been stolen. "Then we don't accuse anyone until we have evidence," Alex commanded firmly, and the room nodded in agreement.Just then, the door burst open and Camille rushed in, completely out of breath. "Alex," she gasped. He turned to face he
