My dad would probably break my legs or maybe even crack open my head to see what was inside.

After thinking it over, I decided to ask Scarlett to go to the parent-teacher meeting instead.

I thought I would have to convince her, but surprisingly, she agreed right away.

On the phone, she teased me, “With grades this bad, of course, you’d only dare ask me. Don’t worry, I won’t tell your dad. But I have one condition.”

I knew it. She never helped for free.

There was no such thing as a free lunch.

She said, “Over the winter break, I’m signing you up for tutoring. If your grades are this terrible again, I’ll tell your dad.”

I stayed quiet for a moment, and then she added quickly, “Just go to your classes and don’t bother me and your dad. You’re such an eyesore.”

I scoffed and agreed.

On the day of the parent-teacher meeting, Scarlett dressed up. She curled her hair, wore lipstick, and put on an expensive-looking coat.
