Chapter 176

Author: Memo Harbor
Once the food had been handed out, Natalie erupted in another tantrum. Rowan and Callum, now loyal to Cyrus, forced her down before she could spark more trouble.

Afterward, Cyrus sent everyone back to their units.

Zoey walked at his side and slipped her hand around his arm. She whispered, "Something feels off in the complex today."

Cyrus eased his arm free. His expression stayed calm as he asked, "Oh? What do you mean?"

She froze for a heartbeat when she remembered he disliked any restraint on his hands outside. He tolerated it inside the apartment. Outside, he stayed alert and never relaxed.

"I feel like a lot of eyes are on us," she said. "It's intense, almost like people are spying on us."

Cyrus smiled faintly. "That's normal. A snowmobile will always stir jealousy. This is the south, and no one else has one. With it, I can go out and bring back supplies. In other words, I can guarantee survival. Who wouldn't want that?"

"But do you think people from the other buildings might

The wind howled and the snow kept coming, so the snowmobile could not pick up much speed. If they pushed it, the machine could flip on the uneven ground.Cyrus and Kenneth held steady at about 30 miles an hour. More than two hours later, they reached the northwest outskirts, the open wilderness beyond Volaris City.Once they left the last clusters of buildings behind, they lost every familiar landmark. Snow more than 30 feet deep had swallowed almost everything that once stood here. The world ahead looked like a vast, unbroken sheet of white.Kenneth stopped the snowmobile beside what had once been a roadside. He narrowed his eyes against the wind and checked their surroundings several times before settling on a direction. He pointed toward a distant mound, a hump of white rising from the endless drifts."Good thing this little hill is still visible. The camp should be close. Another three miles at most," Kenneth said.Cyrus nodded as anticipation rose in him. A few minutes later,

That sudden question made Cyrus' eyes light up. "Kenneth, you know where to find weapons?"He still had plenty of guns and ammunition in his pocket dimension, but his sniper rounds were limited. The police would never store much of that type of ammo, and he had only found one police sniper rifle. As for everything else, he wanted as much firepower as he could get. Fear came from running dry.Kenneth chuckled with a proud look. "Did you forget what I used to do? I served in the army for five years."Cyrus leaned in at once. "You served here in Volaris?"If that were true, Kenneth could guide him straight to a local base.Kenneth shook his head. "No. That was years ago, not in Volaris. But I have old comrades in the unit stationed here. I know where their camp is."He added with open admiration, "Once we reach the base and find their ammo stores, you'll never worry about bullets again. With your sharpshooting, wasting talent because of a shortage would be a crime."The army valued

Cyrus and Kenneth wandered through the city and picked up whatever supplies they found without much urgency. Their conversation drifted back to the situation inside the residential compound.Kenneth eventually asked, "Someone already tried to attack you. They're jealous of that snowmobile. Things will only get worse. Do you have a plan?"Cyrus rarely had time to chat with him. The question drew a helpless smile. He let out a long sigh. "You're asking me? I planned to ask you. Everyone stares at that snowmobile. They know it's the only transportation left in this weather. Every one of them wants to take it from me. What can I do? I can only protect it as best I can. I need to protect myself too."Kenneth nodded. "True. Even looking after the people in Building 25 is difficult. You can't take care of the entire compound. More than a thousand people live there.""Exactly," Cyrus said. "So I can only take one step at a time and figure out a solution bit by bit."Kenneth went quiet fo

Kenneth had neither helmet nor goggles. The wind cut against his face and forced him to squint, the icy flakes slapping his skin in wild, stinging bursts. He did not feel uncomfortable. He felt invigorated. He had not left the residential compound in a long time. After more than half a month trapped inside, the sudden sense of release rushed through him like a jolt of electricity."Hah! Feels amazing to finally get out!" He raised his voice over the engine. "So, Cyrus, where are we heading?""The city is huge," Cyrus said behind him. "Anywhere works. Let's check out Axondale first."Axondale was one of Volaris' well-known commercial districts.Kenneth nodded and turned the snowmobile, following familiar routes from memory. Half an hour later, they arrived.Axondale looked like a forest of half-buried skyscrapers. Tall buildings rose from the drifts like bamboo shoots. Their lower halves lay swallowed under a white sea of snow. They parked the snowmobile and headed into one of th

The moment Cyrus heard the murmurs, he let out a cold laugh. That single sound snapped every mouth shut."Have the meals I gave you lately fattened your courage as well?" His gaze swept the crowd and fixed on Davos. The balding, pudgy man stumbled back two steps, his face drained of color."When I became the building leader, I mentioned one crucial detail. Everyone listens to me." A thin, chilling smile tugged at Cyrus' mouth. "It's been only a few days, and all of you already forgot?"Before anyone reacted, he pulled out his handgun, aimed it at Davos' forehead, and fired.Blood sprayed outward, and several women screamed. No one believed he would act with that level of ruthlessness. When Cyrus chose to pull the trigger, he never hesitated. When he wanted someone dead, he left no exceptions."Anyone who refuses to obey dies," Cyrus said in a frigid voice.Only then did they remember that Cyrus was not a gentle neighbor who brought them food. He was the man who had killed more

Kenneth forced the question through clenched teeth.Cyrus glanced at them and answered in his cool, steady voice, "They ambushed me outside. I killed all of them."From the edge of the neighborhood to Building 21, ten bodies lay scattered across the snow, red slashed over white like a trail of open wounds."Those bastards are too damn treacherous!" Kenneth roared. He turned and barked at the others, "If anything happens to Cyrus, our food supply is gone. That means we're finished!"The group stiffened as the weight of that truth finally settled on them.Cyrus waved his hand. "Go back. Call everyone. I want the entire building downstairs."They rushed to Building 25 and hauled every resident out into the cold.Cyrus' expression stayed frighteningly calm, but his mood had turned volatile. He burned with fury but not because of the ambush. In the Frostfall, attacks like that were routine. He had moved with care, loaded with gear, shielded head to toe, and armed with a pocket dime
