Chapter 88

Author: Memo Harbor
When Cyrus was said to have medicine, Mindy and Andrew went frantic. Facing death, anyone would cling to a lifeline.

Andrew struggled to speak. "Is this true? He really has drugs?"

Mindy glared at Diana. "Don't you lie. Because of you, so many of us are hurt."

The name "Cyrus" still made her shudder.

Diana said, "About a month ago. After that, he changed. He started hoarding like crazy. I saw trucks dropping off supplies almost every day.

"One time, a medical company truck came to the complex. Cyrus met it. They carried two big boxes into his place. They had to be medicine."

Zoey nodded. "Antibiotics aren't rare. If he knew the disaster was coming and stocked up, he probably has plenty of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories."

As a doctor, she was sure of it.

Andrew's eyes lit up like a man who'd just glimpsed hope. "Then go get him. Tell him to bring the medicine and save my life. My wound is his fault. He has to save me."

Mindy clenched her teeth. "But after what just happene

"Open the door! I am Jack. Swap us for this room. Open up, or I will shoot!"The young couple inside clung to each other in terror. "What do we do? They came to take our place. We might even lose the little food we have left."The wife stared at her husband with a pale, desperate look. He wore glasses and had the air of a mild office worker. He held her and forced a steady tone. "Don't be afraid. It will be okay. If they want the house, we will give it to them. Quick, hide the rest of the food on your body."They pushed the remaining rations into their clothes. Their hands shook as they unlocked the door. When the man saw Jack and the others waiting at the threshold he swallowed hard and bowed. "Jack, this place is yours. We will leave right now."They tried to walk away together, but one of Jack's lackeys snorted and swung a steel pipe. The man's knees buckled. Darkness rushed in. His vision dimmed on the tiled floor in a haze of disbelief. He had complied and given up the house

"I'd rather die," Zoey said, her brows knitting.Jack snorted. "I would not let you."He leaned in, his tone almost fond. "A doctor is priceless in this world."If Zoey had not treated his leg, he would not be alive now. He owed her that much. The thought steadied him."Don't worry," he added, eyes glinting. "If the day ever comes when I have to eat you, I will save you for last."His stare burned. He had wanted her for a long time. If she had been useless, he would have made his move much earlier. For now she still had value.Zoey stayed quiet and finished bandaging his wound. The dressing was crude but clean enough for the moment. She picked up her kit to leave, but one of Jack's lackeys stepped forward and blocked the door.Zoey froze. "What are you doing?""Nothing," Jack said. "You cannot leave until my wound is better."Fear sat heavy in his chest. He trusted no one now. Too many wanted him dead. With a doctor at his side he felt safer. He did not ask for her consent. He

The next morning Cyrus heard gunshots echo through the stairwell. Two sharp cracks sounded like oversized firecrackers. He knew Jack had fired them. Jack's thoughts from the night before had hardened. Fear left a hollow space and something darker filled it. Desperation thinned the edges of shame. Cyrus' promise of a week of full meals had turned into poison for their judgment.Cyrus opened the feed and watched the fight unfold on the monitors. Two young men lay on the floor with a wrench and a cleaver beside them.Blood darkened the stairwell. Jack stood against the wall with his gun locked in both hands. Relief and shock flickered across his face. The dead men had tried to block access to the water. That blockade invited opportunistic attacks. Others had seized the moment and struck back.Jack's crew dragged the bodies away. Then Jack and the survivors hurried into their flat. The pistol clenched in his fist gave him the only sense of safety he had left. They dumped the corpses

Vincent: [She is one of Volaris City's famous car models. Look at her face and body, absolutely top tier. I guarantee you will like her. Help me, please.]Cyrus recognized the model at once. Vincent had bought the place only to show off for her. She always dressed to seduce, like a sly vixen, never short on temptation. Back then she barely looked at the men around her. With Cyrus she had stayed cold and proud. Now Vincent was willing to trade her for food. The woman looked worn out, and she seemed willing enough. She knew his house held supplies, so she pushed harder for his camera."What a worthless piece of trash," Cyrus muttered.Undoubtedly, she had a fine figure and a pretty face. Nonetheless, he refused to let in a shameless woman who would sell herself. Someone like that might stab him while he slept and steal the place. A woman who traded her body had no moral bottom line.He watched her video five times, then closed the chat with a sneer.More messages arrived. Men offer

Cries kept rising at the window. The people outside slammed their heads until the skin split and blood streaked down the glass. The sound scraped at the nerves."Come on now. Don't do this. It unsettles me." Cyrus sighed and walked to the window while lifting a steaming plate of pasta."My appetite wakes when I feel uneasy," he said and slurped a mouthful. He ate with open pleasure. The neighbors stared and swallowed hard. Hunger gnawed at them. Rage simmered in them. Their pleas grew louder, and their heads struck the glass with frantic force."Cyrus, we were wrong. We only want to live.""Give us a little food. Let us live like dogs. Anything you want later, we will do."Cyrus kept eating. A hot plate of pasta could feel like a small treasure when someone starved. After half a plate he set the rest on the sill. One pane of glass kept them from the warmth. They could see the food. They could not reach it. Their faces spread against the window like animals pretending the feast be

They were as good as dead already.Cyrus smirked. "Well, at least falling to your death is better than burning alive."A charred, twisted face slammed against the glass with a dull thud, eyes wide with hatred and despair."Help me! Please, help me!" the man screamed, his voice ragged with pain.Cyrus raised his coffee cup and gave a mocking salute. "Help you? Help my ass. Go die, you useless piece of trash."The man's final cry vanished into the roar of the flames. On the neighboring balcony, the 70 people waiting for their turn to attack could only watch in horror."Help! Somebody help me!""I don't want to die! Please!"The man engulfed in fire tried to climb toward them, clutching the railing with melting hands. Before he could reach them, a man on that balcony kicked his hand away without hesitation. "Get lost! You're done for. Don't drag us down with you!"The burning man clung desperately to the rail, but the other kept kicking. One savage blow broke his finger clean o
