It had been three days since Christy’s visit to Shedrack’s home, where she had met him at the hospital with the water samples. He had promised to let her know as soon as the results were out. Christy had collected all the samples she could, from river water to tap water, Well water, and sewage water was not an exception.

She had been busy those days, from working her shifts at the hospital to checking up on her contractor for the bunker. Sometimes she just shopped for the things she needed online and input the delivery date, which was when the contractors said the building would be ready for use. Still, deep down, she felt everything was going too slowly as the number of Ru-Zero patients kept soaring. As for her system, it had only shown people’s profiles.

Christy’s thoughts briefly drifted to Shedrack. She still remembered the scent of his cologne from the mall, vanilla and something stronger she couldn’t place.

She frowned and forced the thought away.

I have an apocalypse to prepare for. Why the hell am I thinking about his cologne?

“Mummy,” Sam said, striding into her bedroom alongside Taby.

Christy immediately wiped away the little blush that had crept in, regardless of how hard she tried to control it.

“Yes, my baby, come here,” Christy said, picking up her Sammy. Taby had her big unicorn toy in her hands, and she stood relaxing against the bed frame, her eyes locked on the ceiling.

“Mommy, when can we meet Daddy?” she asked, her eyes still on the ceiling.

Christy swallowed hard. She brought her hand down to Taby’s light brown hair, running her fingers through it.

“Soon, baby…”

Taby stomped her feet, her round eyes finally resting on her mom.

“You said that last week.” Her little brow arched into a frown. “I want Daddy!” Her voice was full of protest.

Sammy looked between them and struggled to stand on his mother’s thigh.

“Me too, want Daddy,” Sammy said.

Sam was a copy of his father, with blond hair and hazel eyes, his small nose exactly like his father’s. Unlike Taby, who took her brown hair color from her mother and her hazel eyes from her father. Christy made a mental note to herself to never let her children find out how selfish their father was.

“You can call him, Taby,” Christy said. “Daddy will come if his princess asks him to.”

Christy remembered how she had cut all ties with Judas in her first life after finding out he had cheated on her with his secretary. Now that she thought about it, she realized the emotional impact of her actions, and she couldn’t help but feel guilty about it.

“Really?” Taby jumped up, her round hazel eyes lighting up with joy.

“Really!” Sammy said too. Christy noticed how her son now followed in his sister’s footsteps.

Sometimes she wished days like this would never end, days when she got to just stay indoors and watch her kids.

Taby ran out with Sammy in hand to call their father on the home line. Christy stood up and followed them.

Taby had just dialed the line when Christy’s mobile phone started ringing. The caller ID showed her contractor.

“Hello, Mrs. Knox,” a man’s voice said.

“Hello,” Christy replied.

“It’s Mr. Luka, at the construction site.” He stopped, probably thinking of how to tell her. “There’s been a problem, ma’am,” he finally said.

“What is it?” Christy asked. Judging from his tense voice, she could guess what had happened.

“A woman named Diane Norman came by. She threatened to have us arrested for trespassing and immediately ordered us to stop work. We don’t want any problems, so we decided to stop construction immediately,” Mr. Luka said.

“Hold on, Mr. Luka. I will get back to you immediately,” Christy said calmly, but internally, her emotions were rising.

“We can’t hold—”

Christy snapped, cutting the man off.

“I paid you to work for me, so when I ask you to stay put, you stay put!” she yelled.

There was silence at the other end. Christy felt like an hour had passed, even though it was just a few seconds. She bit down on her lip anxiously, slightly shocked at her own outburst. She wasn’t one to yell. Maybe the changes that had come with the apocalypse were affecting her emotionally too.

“Okay, ma’am,” Mr. Luka finally said. Christy immediately disconnected the call and dropped her phone before he could say anything more.

Knock. Knock.

Christy instinctively jerked back, fear briefly engulfing her.

“Mummy, someone’s at the door,” she heard Taby’s voice from the home line, which was stationed in the dining room.

Another wave of desperate, rough knocking that sounded more like banging came from the front door.

Christy pulled herself together, shaking off the fear, and glanced at her babies.

“Daddy, we missed you,” she heard Taby say as she passed by.

The door suddenly swung open, and a brown-haired lady in her mid-twenties walked in. Her eyes burned with rage.

The floating bar appeared.

“Arm myself? For what?”

Christy hurried towards her sister.

“Chloe, you didn’t tell me you were com—”

Slap!

Christy’s voice trailed off as her mom appeared behind Chloe and struck her across the face.

“Mom…” Christy’s voice stuck in her throat, tears streaming down her burning cheek.

The hospital was the last place Christy wanted to be, yet it was where she needed to stay.Ramie was in one of the hospital rooms, fighting a disease Christy still didn’t know how to cure. Cal was unconscious in the ICU, his condition uncertain after the Burrower attack. And somewhere in the hospital, her two children were waiting for her to finish a shift she could barely concentrate on.She was running out of time, and for once, she had no idea what to do next. The hospital’s staff nanny had settled Taby and Sammy in the small break room off the pediatric ward. Coloring books were scattered across the table, a cartoon played quietly on the television, and Sam was already half-asleep on a beanbag chair.Christy checked on them during the first hour of her shift, making sure they had everything they needed before returning to her duties. The rest of the night passed in a blur of IV lines, X-rays, and patients who needed more attention than she had the energy to give. She worked on aut

"Don't tell me you risked your life to bring that thing with you?" Christy said with a frown."I smell trouble," Franc said, his voice barely above a whisper."I'm a scientist, remember?""A scientist? And you saw this as the right call?" Christy pointed at the dead juvenile burrower, blue, blood-like fluid dripping from its mouth."Did you think about what would have happened if those things in there got to you, or to Rosa? What would all of this be for?" she spat, her eyes burning with hurtful anger.Shedrack was speechless. He only watched, his eyes filled with guilt. To Christy's surprise, Rosa walked up to her and held her hand."I'm sorry, Rosa. I made him do it," she said.Christy couldn't believe her ears. Her eyes found Rosa's grey eyes, and Rosa quickly raised her hand to her ear."I'm sorry," she said."Can we get the hell out of here first!" Jobber screamed impatiently. Only then did Christy remember Cal—that in her rage, she had slapped him without a care in the world tha

"RUN!" Christy shouted. Several small bodies burst from the sewer, crawling over one another as they charged toward the group. Christy stumbled backward. They were smaller than the burrowers she remembered, but they were no less horrifying. Their bodies were pale and almost gray, their skin stretched tightly over their thin, twisted frames. Their limbs were unnaturally long, with sharp claws scraping against the concrete as they crawled. Their heads were almost completely round. And their eyes—black. Completely black. There were no pupils, no whites. Nothing. Their mouths split open, revealing rows of tiny, sharp teeth surrounding a dark, sucking cavity. "They're coming!" Rosa screamed. A gunshot rang through the sewer. BANG! One of the creatures jerked backward as the bullet struck its shoulder. "Keep moving!" Cal yelled. Franc and Jobber immediately opened fire. BANG! BANG! BANG! “What the fuck are they?” Someone asked, a question nobody had the luxury

"They are in the sewer, we are all going to die!" the boy screamed and thrashed like he had gone mad in Rosa's hold. Jobber and Franc rushed to hold him down too. Shedrack held Christy back. "What's in the sewer?" Christy asked, her voice shaky. She tried to take a step towards him, but Shedrack's hold was so tight it prevented her from moving even an inch. He stopped, as if trying to remember what they were. The horror in his eyes, and the way his badly bruised body was covered in chilling goosebumps, told her he wasn't crazy, even when it looked like it. "They… they're suckers… eat… dig…" he stuttered, his dilated eyes moving in no clear direction. "Hey! Stop thrashing around," Cal's heavy voice came from behind, where he'd been watching the boy for quite some time now. Christy felt cold run down her spine. Only one thing rang in her head: The Burrowers were already here. Then what the hell was happening to her timeline? She looked up at Shedrack, his hot breath fanning her

20/02/2030 Christy had just finished her shift that day. She had plans with Shedrack to investigate the sewer she'd gotten that water sample from. It had been a week of little sleep and severe fatigue, and her body was only just struggling to keep up with her pace. Christy called home to make sure her babies were alright. Mrs. James assured her that they'd been fine that morning when she took them to school. As for Judas, he hadn't checked up on them as he'd promised to. "That jerk!" Christy murmured under her breath as she turned a corner and strolled down to the parking lot where she and Shedrack had planned to meet. She saw him standing with his back to a black, long SUV. She waved at him, and to her shock, three men walked out from the other side of the SUV. "Hey," Christy said as she reached him, nodding towards them. "Hi, you must be Christiana Knox, his work girlfriend," the woman, introduced to Shedrack as Rosa, abruptly interrupted out of nowhere. "How did you

Shedrack handed her a cup of tea and sat beside her, his eyes searching hers. Her arms were crossed tight over her chest, her body still shivering slightly. "What do you mean by those things?" Shedrack asked, his eyes narrowing slightly without the rest of his face following. Christy's heartbeat was suddenly loud in her ears, drowning out everything else. Shedrack gripped her shoulder tightly. "You need to trust me, Christy," he pleaded, his voice soft at the edges. Christy inhaled, then exhaled loudly. She looked up at Shedrack, contemplating whether she should tell him or not. Her eyes then dropped to her fidgeting fingers, and she gripped them tightly. "If I tell you, promise me you'll believe me," Christy said. "C'mon, I'll believe you," he softly urged her on. Christy quickly recalled everything she knew, everything that had happened from her past life and now. Shedrack expression went from confusion to pale skin. "You mean the eclipse comes with the things… um,
