Chapter 57

Author: Ada Plus
Nicole's view was too blurry to make anything out, so she pulled out her binoculars.

Two inflatable rafts came into focus. A handful of men and women stood on them, gripping wooden poles and metal rods, swinging again and again at a window ledge on the fifth floor.

On the ledge stood a soaked dog. Its teeth were bared, snarling, and it was barking like it was ready to tear them apart.

"Come on, kill it! We'll have meat tonight!"

The group was fired up, waving their weapons, laughing as they

I understand that a back story was invented to justify having a dog, but I'll never understand why dogs are frequently used in apocalypse-type settings. They use a lot of resources, they attract attention and they're an added worry on the field. Nicole already showed that she's more than capable

  • The Apocalypse Survival Manual   Chapter 510

The alternative medicine research institute in Fairmont had come to Westbridge to recruit students. Anyone interested could apply as long as they had some basic medical knowledge.Since the disasters began, the number of doctors had dropped drastically, especially those trained in modern medicine. Some had died in natural disasters or violent attacks, while others could no longer practice without medicine, equipment, or functioning hospitals. Modern health care nearly collapsed. When survivors got sick, they either suffered through it or waited to die. With no better option, alternative medicine was forced to fill the gap. During this relatively stable period, the institute needed not only to preserve as many medicinal plants as possible, but also to train a new generation of practitioners.Of course, calling the weather stable was a stretch. Daytime temperatures still climbed as high as 113 degrees, while nighttime lows could plunge to 5 below zero.Fortunately, they had insula

Marcus was about to leave when the group in the yard called after him."Marcus, come back and hang out with us.""No, you guys have fun."With a cigarette between his lips, Marcus strolled away without looking back. The party had mostly been thrown to impress him, but he clearly had no interest in staying. After what happened with Camila, the other wealthy guests quickly lost whatever enthusiasm they had left.Who exactly lived in Villa 50? Even Marcus seemed to be treating them with a certain amount of respect.Back home, Nicole sat quietly, lost in thought. Camila's face kept flashing through her mind, leaving her inexplicably uneasy.Zeph set a cup of coffee in front of her. "Worried Marcus is going to cause trouble?"Nicole shook her head. The cars were safely hidden in her storage space. As long as she never took them out, no one would ever know."Is it the woman with the alpaca?"Nicole shook her head again but said nothing.Zeph sat down beside her. "We're not going t

  • The Apocalypse Survival Manual   Chapter 508

Marcus had not only seen Nicole before. He had given her a hard time when she worked at his custom car club.Back then, he strutted around like he owned the place. If she hadn't needed footage for her videos and the traffic they brought in, she never would have swallowed her pride and put up with him.Nicole smiled. "Are you hitting on me?"The question caught him completely off guard.Sure, she was beautiful and had a strong personality. In the dull gray world of the apocalypse, she stood out like a bright red rose covered in thorns. But seriously? He might enjoy a challenge, but that did not mean he was interested in every woman he met.Everyone thought of him as a shameless playboy who had slept with more women than he could count. But after spending seven figures on a pink diamond, he planned to settle down and leave that life behind. Then his girlfriend disappeared during the disasters.Come to think of it, he hadn't been with anyone in a long time."Sorry, but I'm alread

  • The Apocalypse Survival Manual   Chapter 507

Nicole looked over with a cold gaze. The two things had nothing to do with each other, but when she remembered the three armored supercars in her storage space, along with the seven-figure pink diamond it had absorbed, she felt a brief twinge of guilt under Marcus's gaze. She concealed it so well that it vanished almost immediately."Really?" Marcus asked with a faint smile, his hands in his pockets. "She's that arrogant?"Camila's friend nodded eagerly. "Yes. We all saw it."More people rushed to back Camila up."That's right! She provoked the alpaca on purpose, then ordered her dog to attack it. She obviously came here looking for a fight."One accusation followed another, and the crowd grew more hostile by the second. As far as they were concerned, Nicole was a penniless nobody who had already beaten up several security guards and now seemed to think she could do whatever she wanted in the neighborhood. Did she really expect all of them to stand there and let her walk all o

  • The Apocalypse Survival Manual   Chapter 506

Nicole's momentary hesitation gave the wealthy partygoers time to react. As soon as they realized one of their friends was being attacked, they rushed forward."Why did you hit her?"Someone hurried over to help the woman up. "Camila, are you okay?"The moment Camila Clark got a good look at Nicole, she froze.Several people in the neighborhood had mentioned that another woman living there looked a lot like her, but Camila had never taken them seriously. Before the apocalypse, cosmetic surgery had been so common, especially among social media influencers, that half of them had seemed to have the same face. She had assumed everyone was exaggerating, but apparently, they weren't.The two women were not identical, but the resemblance was impossible to miss. Nicole was taller, and her features were colder and more striking.Ignoring the accusing looks around her, Nicole said flatly, "Are you blind? She tried to hit me first.""She didn't mean it. You hit her way too hard. And your

The yard was packed with pets, including corgis, papillons, Persian cats, British Shorthairs, and even an alpaca.Cola looked around as though he had entered an entirely new world. Ever since his transformation, his instincts had become harder to control. But a single stroke from Zeph was enough to calm him down. Cola immediately slipped into working-dog mode, quiet and disciplined. He held his head high and strutted forward with proud, confident steps. The party was already in full swing, and the crowd erupted into excited screams when Marcus arrived. No one noticed the alpaca wandering out of the yard.As Nicole walked past, something suddenly hit her in the face.It was warm and wet.The moment she realized what it was, her entire body went rigid. A string of furious, almost puppy-like growls erupted beside her.Cola had already knocked the alpaca to the ground and clamped his jaws around its leg, thrashing it back and forth."Cola," Zeph snapped.Cola ignored him and refus

Nicole didn't hesitate. She blocked Edward right away.Less than a minute later, her phone rang again. It was an unfamiliar number. She didn't need to guess; this was Edward's classmate or one of his friends.Given a second chance at life, Nicole had zero interest in being taken for a fool. She w

Nicole never expected the new resident of 1801 to be the same young man who had helped her at the courier station. He looked mildly surprised, too. He nodded once at her, then went back to work.Up close, he was striking in a cold, sharp way. He was tall and lean, with broad shoulders and clean li

Two miles was nothing. The Hummer reached the entrance to the complex in just a few minutes.Nicole handed the man 400 dollars, thanking him for saving her and for ignoring traffic rules. His voice stayed cool. "No need. I was heading this way, anyway."Seeing he wouldn't take it, she didn't push

Just after midnight, the timer refreshed. One hundred thirty minutes remaining. That meant time could stack.Nicole nearly laughed out loud. Seconds mattered. During crucial moments, even a minute could mean the difference between living and dying. She decided that unless it was absolutely necess
