Chapter 85

Author: Ada Plus
Both sides stayed on guard, worried about getting double-crossed. Out on the open floodwater, there was nowhere to hide, which made it the safest place to trade.

Two hundred and two pounds of wild boar meat got them good rice in equal weight. They agreed to meet again at 7 p.m. that night for another trade.

The three of them brought the rice back. Nicole had already packed everything they would need: a frying pan, salt, seasonings, and supplies to stay overnight.

Worried about Beatrice holdin

The pod kept rocking, but Nicole left her eyes closed and drifted back to sleep.Zeph drew back the curtain. Outside, it was pitch-black, though he could make out a few stars overhead. The stars were beautiful. Below them, the world lay in ruins. He tucked the blanket around Nicole and closed his eyes to get a little more rest. He dozed on and off until dawn.Cola stood with his paws braced against the window, peering curiously into the distance. "Woof!"The sea was calmer, and the rocking eased considerably. Nicole unbuckled her harness and leaned over to look. The sun was rising over the ocean. A thin veil of mist hung over the water. The red sun slowly climbed, glowing gold as its rays pierced the haze and washed the sea and sky in crimson.Such beauty in a world so cruel.Nicole took out her phone and snapped a picture of Cola watching the sunrise through the window.Poppy felt much better after some sleep. She quietly ate her warm rolls and plain oatmeal."The waves are

Nicole made sure to check Cola. He looked dazed and badly shaken, but Zeph kept him safe through the ordeal, stopping him from panicking completely. He sprawled on the floor, panting. After half an hour of rest, he looked much more alert.Nicole checked her storage space with her mind. In her rush to put their lunch away, she didn't think about where to put it. The bowls ended up in the living room, with potato casserole spilled all over the floor. So much for lunch. She would have to find them something else. This time, she brought out sautéed beef. With no reason to hurry, they took their time eating. After lunch and some juice, she sent Poppy and Cola off for a nap. They spent nearly two hours in her storage space before she returned the pod to the ocean, where it rose and fell with the waves.Nicole drew back the curtain, and bright light flooded in.The worst of the tsunami triggered by the sinking land was over. But as far as she could see, there was only open ocean, fier

Nicole saw stars as the pod threw her around. Without the harness holding her securely at several points, she would've been knocked senseless. The gravity stabilizer spun wildly. Just as she felt stomach acid rise in her throat, the pod wedged in place and stopped.Darkness surrounded them, and the round window was their only way to see out.The hatch faced up, giving them a clear view of the fissure overhead. They were so deep that only a sliver of daylight reached them.Nicole peered up. The opening looked almost 1,000 feet above them. Even a pair of wings probably wouldn't get them out of this. After everything they survived, there wasn't much left to scare her. She turned to Zeph. "Well, looks like we're retiring down here."Zeph took it in stride, as familiar with disaster as she was. "As long as I'm with you."He barely finished speaking before another tremor sent clumps of dirt and countless rocks raining down.Falling from that height, they hit with devastating forc

  • The Apocalypse Survival Manual   Chapter 795

Zeph knew wilderness survival inside and out. He studied the grass, his expression grim. "Nicole, this place is going under, too."Nicole nodded. "We need to get ready."It was sedge, one of the few plants used for landscaping at high elevations. In places at risk of turning to desert, its roots held the sand in place, kept the soil from washing or blowing away, and helped it retain moisture.Normally, it stayed green year-round. Up here in the basin, though, it only put out new growth in late spring, when warmer temperatures melted the snow and supplied much-needed water.Yet here it was, sprouting in the driest part of the year. There wasn't any recent rain to explain it, but the soil was damp enough for the dormant grass to put out new shoots. Cracks must have opened underground, letting moisture seep up from below.Zeph dug into the ground with a shovel. About a foot down, the soil was noticeably wetter.A few days later, Nicole caught a faint salty smell on the breeze. Th

The thugs had it all figured out. Before they could make their move, gunfire erupted. Automatic fire swept back and forth across the group. The attackers couldn't see in the dark, but Nicole and the others wore night-vision goggles. Their shots found their targets with deadly accuracy. The men fell one after another before they could even draw their weapons.Nicole opened the electric fence's gate and stepped out, sword in hand.A few were still alive. They pleaded in terror. "Please, don't kill me! Have mercy!"Standing in the swirling sand, Nicole gave them a cold smile. In the darkness, she looked like death itself. She drove her blade into every one of them, even those who already lay still. She wasn't taking any chances. Then she headed for the camp a little over half a mile away, with Zeph beside her in the darkness. The camp was close enough for the gunfire to carry, even over the howling wind. It was in chaos. Men and women shouted over one another, their panic turn

Anyone who survived this long must have been through unspeakable things. Nicole fixed the group with a hard stare. "I'll give you one chance to walk away. Now get out of here, and don't come back."The middle-aged man led his shaken group away, and Poppy kept a wary eye on them.Half an hour later, she came inside with a frown. "Zeph, Nicole, they set up camp a little over half a mile away."Nicole wasn't surprised. Getting this far was an achievement in itself, and they didn't exactly have anywhere else to go.Besides, they probably still hoped to get their hands on the supplies. They were scared, sure, but fear only went so far when their survival was on the line. They probably chose to camp nearby for two reasons. Seeing how comfortably Nicole's group lived, they assumed there was water nearby. They also still wanted their supplies, and if they got desperate enough, they could try catching them off guard.Nicole guessed these people came from money. Years in the cutthroat

"Ah!"Nicole Floyd jolted upright in bed, gasping. Sweat streamed down her forehead, her eyes unfocused and hollow. The sight in front of her cut through the haze in her mind. This was her old apartment, the one from before the apocalypse.Ding, ding…Text alerts kept chiming. She grabbed her p

Nicole didn't hesitate. She blocked Edward right away.Less than a minute later, her phone rang again. It was an unfamiliar number. She didn't need to guess; this was Edward's classmate or one of his friends.Given a second chance at life, Nicole had zero interest in being taken for a fool. She w

Nicole never expected the new resident of 1801 to be the same young man who had helped her at the courier station. He looked mildly surprised, too. He nodded once at her, then went back to work.Up close, he was striking in a cold, sharp way. He was tall and lean, with broad shoulders and clean li

Two miles was nothing. The Hummer reached the entrance to the complex in just a few minutes.Nicole handed the man 400 dollars, thanking him for saving her and for ignoring traffic rules. His voice stayed cool. "No need. I was heading this way, anyway."Seeing he wouldn't take it, she didn't push
