Chapter 898

Author: Ada Plus
Weasel eagerly served the grains, filling everyone's bowl.

With no proper barbecue seasoning available, Marcus stirred some dipping sauce into his portion. After one bite, he launched into praise.

"Nicole, how do you make everything taste this good?"

Weasel glanced up, immediately wary of all that flattery. He wasn't about to let Marcus become Nicole's new favorite.

"She's good at everything," he cut in. "Cooking, medicine, you name it. She's even been teaching my wife a few things."

Poppy took one look at Nicole's face and decided against defending Cola. Instead, she quietly began picking up the things scattered across the house.Even she had to admit he went too far this time.Zeph knew what it was like to be in love, and he had some sympathy for Cola. "Wolves are pregnant for about two months. There can't be many left out here in this weather, either. Besides, Cola's smart. I don't think he's being fooled.""Are you sure about that?" Nicole demanded.Apparently, the males in this family stuck together.Zeph shifted under her stare and glanced at the wolf. "Look at her. That white coat, without a single patch of another color. She's beautiful, and she seems pretty proud. I doubt she'd settle for just any wolf."And Cola can do things even a trained military dog couldn't. He's hardly an ordinary dog. "He's never shown much interest in other dogs. It's like none of them were good enough for him."I think they really like each other. That would explain ho

The white wolf let Cola pull it along, though it stayed tense and watchful. Slowly, they came closer.Wind howled around them, whipping the snow into a white blur. The cold stung every patch of exposed skin and seemed to work its way deep into their bodies. At the doorway, the wolf suddenly tried to bolt. Cola tightened his grip on its scruff and hauled it inside.Nicole barely had time to process the fact that he brought a wolf home. They needed to close the doors. She and Zeph struggled against the wind until they finally pulled both doors shut and slid the bolt into place. With the storm shut out, the sudden quiet was a relief. After more than ten minutes outside, Nicole's ears rang, her chest felt tight, and she couldn't quite catch her breath. However, her attention went straight to the wolf. It crouched in a corner, watching Nicole, Zeph, and Poppy with wary amber eyes. Its lips curled back over sharp teeth.Cola rushed over and pinned it down. He closed his jaws around

  • The Apocalypse Survival Manual   Chapter 924

Nicole was starting to worry. Cola never showed much interest in other dogs. Molly couldn't win him over no matter how hard she tried, and he treated Dumbo like a little follower despite all his attempts to get closer. Now, he was giving a wolf his favorite chicken drumsticks.Apparently, even Cola could get swept off his feet. The thought left Nicole uneasy. If the wolf was female, would he get so attached that he forgot about them? What if he followed her off one day and never came back? And if it was male, that raised a whole different set of questions about how this relationship was supposed to work.Zeph stared at her. "Why are you worrying about that?"If Cola decided to leave, they couldn't make him stay.Nicole knew that, but understanding it didn't make her worry any less. She had raised him, after all.Zeph gave her an exasperated smile. "You're getting way ahead of yourself."Cola was practically a senior citizen in dog years. Nicole tried to accept that he could

This time, Cola didn't get away fast enough. Nicole followed him in time to spot a thin white animal racing across the snow. Its coat blended so well into the landscape that she nearly missed it. Cola tore after it at full speed. He caught up with the white wolf, and they tumbled into the snow, snapping and clawing at each other.Nicole drew her handgun, but they were already too far away for a reliable shot. She switched to a submachine gun.Cola and the wolf rolled through the drifts, disappearing beneath the snow and springing back out. They moved too fast and stayed too close for her to aim without risking a hit on Cola. She handed the gun to Zeph. "You take the shot."He was an excellent marksman. If anyone could do it, he could.Zeph raised the weapon, but the animals kept moving, and they were now more than 200 yards away.Nicole waited impatiently for him to fire. When he didn't, she pulled a sniper rifle from her storage space.Zeph wasn't hesitating for no reason. T

Whether Cola felt guilty or just didn't seem bothered by his injuries, he kept wagging his tail at them. Then he rolled onto his back in the snow and offered his belly for a rub.Nicole was still furious, but she crouched beside him to check his wounds. He had two bites on his legs and several deep claw marks across his back. When she examined the wound near his mouth, she found a tuft of white fur. For a moment, she wondered if he had tangled with a polar bear. But the size difference made that hard to believe.Zeph studied the fur. "A wolf?"Nicole almost dismissed it. Ten years into the disasters, even people struggled to survive. Wild animals must have suffered just as much.Still, their survival instincts were every bit as strong as a human's, perhaps stronger. Some could have made it through.A white wolf was possible. She couldn't tell whether Cola got the better of it or barely escaped. That could wait. Once they checked the area for danger, Nicole scooped him up and

For once, Nicole let herself have some fun. She brought out a pot of boiling water to try tossing it into the freezing air and watching it turn to snow. She filled a ladle and flung the water away from her in a wide arc.Unfortunately, Zeph couldn't seem to get a decent picture. His timing was hopeless, and after several attempts, they still didn't have a single good shot.Nicole gave up on him as a photographer.Poppy picked it up much faster. A few tries were all she needed to take pictures that looked almost professional. For a while, the novelty kept them entertained. They slept late, played in the snow, and gathered around the stove to roast sweet potatoes. Sometimes, they passed the time with a game of cards. On their ninth day in the frozen north, the storm finally let up.An unbroken stretch of white surrounded them. Under its thick coating of ice, their container blended into the landscape. From a distance, it was almost impossible to spot. Before long, Poppy grew rest

Nicole didn't hesitate. She blocked Edward right away.Less than a minute later, her phone rang again. It was an unfamiliar number. She didn't need to guess; this was Edward's classmate or one of his friends.Given a second chance at life, Nicole had zero interest in being taken for a fool. She w

Nicole never expected the new resident of 1801 to be the same young man who had helped her at the courier station. He looked mildly surprised, too. He nodded once at her, then went back to work.Up close, he was striking in a cold, sharp way. He was tall and lean, with broad shoulders and clean li

Two miles was nothing. The Hummer reached the entrance to the complex in just a few minutes.Nicole handed the man 400 dollars, thanking him for saving her and for ignoring traffic rules. His voice stayed cool. "No need. I was heading this way, anyway."Seeing he wouldn't take it, she didn't push

Just after midnight, the timer refreshed. One hundred thirty minutes remaining. That meant time could stack.Nicole nearly laughed out loud. Seconds mattered. During crucial moments, even a minute could mean the difference between living and dying. She decided that unless it was absolutely necess
